One of the most profound stories in the Bible is when God made His covenant with Abraham, found in Genesis 15. God instructed Abraham to bring a heifer, a goat, and a ram, split them in half, and place the pieces on an altar opposite each other. Then, a thick darkness fell on Abraham and he saw a flaming torch pass between the offerings.
In the ancient world, this was a common practice when a deal was being made. The offering would be divided and both parties making the covenant would walk between the pieces, essentially saying, "May God do this to me if I don't hold up my end of the bargain."
With Abraham, though, only One Person passed through - God Himself. This was a special covenant where God was taking on all the risk and Abraham had nothing to do but believe God. This is exactly what Jesus did for us on the cross - He took the totality of our sin on Himself, sealing the deal with His own blood, while we have but to believe. That's the power of the blood of Jesus!
