- A flag raising at Toronto City Hall marking Israel’s independence day spurred protests, amid growing international opposition to Israel’s war against Hamas as it prepares for a promised assault on Rafah.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow declined to attend the controversial flag raising, describing it as “divisive.”
Chow said the ongoing conflict in Gaza is causing “deep pain” for many in Toronto, and with emotions running high it is important to show empathy for those impacted by the bloodshed in the Middle East.

There is a vast difference between raising an Israeli flag to express support for occupation, oppression, racist laws, apartheid, war crimes, genocide and keeping people in prison camps due to their race and on the other hand raising a Palestinian flag to express support for the right of Palestinians to be free of oppression and persecution or causing a rainbow flag to express support for LGBTQ people to be free of oppression and persecution.

There should never be a foreign national flag raised on a public government building or property -- except for very special occasions like WWII commemorations where many other flags of nations that fought along with Canada would be present, and things like the Olympics or an official visit for a member of state. We do not put up the US flag on the 4th of July nor does the US fly the Canadian flag on the July 1st. The only Israeli flag that should have been raised is that on the consulate or even one that they bring to an event, perhaps to give out to those who want it.

If a neighbour and I were in a dispute and it escalated to physical violence, eventually affecting our whole neighbourhood. Then the situation escalated, resulting in the death of loved ones, on both sides. Then after my house was burnt down, my neighbour’s was too, just because they were trying to help me.
After so much loss, suffering, and the situation is continuously getting worse, I reach out in an attempt to hold on to what I have left! Even if only my own breath. A friend, acquaintance far from my painful memories and tattered life, home, offers me sanctuary. A second chance to rebuild my life. For the first time, I have choice. I can stay, or decide to start over.
I must make a decision. Am I to move into the new home, make new friends, start to build a new life for myself? Then what? What will I do upon (predictably) hearing that my old neighbour, the devil that I had the dispute with, is still terrorizing friends and family back home? Am I going to involve myself again ? Am I going to involve the family who has offered me shelter, safety, sanctuary and the opportunity to start again, also my new friends, neighbourhood, firing up everyone’s emotions?😢Knowing they care about me and in their compassion, they too realize the injustice. So with the love, compassion, understanding of the truth and freedom all deserve, I will take up the fight with my new friends and my old neighbour again! This time I will win! My new neighbours understand!!! They too believe in freedom, human rights, sanctuary and respect for all life!
So the old dispute transmutes. More people, who don’t even know each other-mother’s, father’s, children, gather to stand up to my old neighbour and those who sided with him.
My old neighbour thrives on conflict. He has a whole new neighbourhood to terrorize!
