- Hello friends welcome to my channel Pathology Gyan, My name is Akash Prajapati, Today's topic is Catecholamine Test.
What is a catecholamine blood test?
The catecholamine blood test is used to measure the levels of epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine. It is mainly used to detect any type of tumor and cancer in the adrenal gland.
Catecholamine is a chemical secreted in the body. This chemical is secreted by the terminal ends of nerves and the adrenal gland. They work like hormones and neurotransmitters. In some types of diseases and other medical conditions, these hormones help in maintaining the internal balance of the body. There are two types of catecholamines in the body, epinephrine or adrenalin, norepinephrine or noradrenalin, and dopamine.
Sometimes, the final products of catecholamines such as metanephrine, normetanephrine, and vanillylmandelic acid are also tested with the help of a 24-hour urine sample test. This helps to diagnose conditions associated with high catecholamine levels, such as adrenal gland tumors.
Why is a Catecholamine Blood Test performed?
This test diagnoses conditions that cause increased levels of catecholamines in the blood. These conditions include adrenal gland tumors such as pheochromocytoma, neuroblastoma, etc.
Some of the symptoms of pheochromocytoma are:
Severe headache
Excessive sweating
Rapid heartbeat
Body tremors
Excessive anxiety
Irritability and nervousness
Excessive paleness
Dizziness
High blood pressure
Weight loss
Increased blood sugar levels
In children, increased levels of catecholamines in the blood cause:
Bone pain
Limping while walking
Abnormal eye and leg movements
Anemia
Weight loss
Swelling in the abdomen
How to prepare for a catecholamine blood test?
It is important to fast for 10 hours for a catecholamine blood test. Water can be drunk during this time. Mental stress and excessive exercise can affect the test reports, so stay stress-free and avoid exercise before the test.
Certain types of food and drinks should be avoided a week before the test, such as tea, coffee, cocoa, bananas, walnuts and fruits rich in vitamin C, such as oranges and grapefruits.
