Glad the kids bought books. 👍👍 Maintain and keep them safe and they'll continue to delight generations to come. I didn't know any better when I was young and thus, did not keep some of the books from the 60s / 70s when the family shifted somewhere else. I've always regretted it since those books were what my brothers used in schools (I think) and there were many interesting stories and beautifully drawn pictures. I especially loved the ones that tell of a futuristic world. It's very 60s-ish. 😄 I kept all the story books since then, from primary school and onward. I even have one that was my brother's birthday gift, Paddington, that was given to him in the 50s. He doesn't care about it so I'm keeping it. Recently, I was curious about children's books and looked up some titles at Amazon. I was amazed by what I saw. Titles are always reprinted of course and sometimes the images on the book front change as well. The hardcovers of yesterday have now gone into soft covers with horrible pictures. I don't call them art. I frankly have no idea what they are. Scribbles? Doodles? Where have all the beautiful book art of yesterday gone to? Where is the intricacy, the details and the beauty of colours that would intrigue children's minds and invoke imaginations and inspirations? I was sad by what I saw.
It is lovely to keep books. I do like the feel of a book and snuggling up with the kids and a book. We had to leave some of our books behind when we relocated and the kids enjoy going to the library to find them. I guess mass production has changed the way books are illustrated and some of the beauty has been list over time. We’ve found lots of lovely books and with lovely illustrations - I guess they are just a bit harder to find these days.
❤I didn’t even realise they have located to Woodlands now… They were known as “Thieves Market” in Sungei Road where the new Jalan Besar Station (Blue Line) occupies. This is where one man’s junk is another person’s treasure and definitely brings back lots of memories!… Thanks 🙏 for sharing this story❤️🙏😃
I'm always on a constant mission to declutter my place 😂 This video is a reminder that I should spend my money on experiences/food, and not on stuff that collects dust!
It’s actually pronounced and spelled as Karung Guni which is Gunny Sack in Malay. Somehow the word got bastardised over the years that it became Karang Guni. Btw, Karang is Malay for Coral 🪸 Also applies to Geylang and Kallang. Both towns are bastardisation of the word Kilang which means Factory in Malay. #nyk ✌🏼
We've visited the old thieves market in the 70s and on one visit my friend saw and bought a old brass davey lamp that were used in coal mines to monitor any gas build up. We could think why it would end up in Singapore but maybe it could have been used to check for gas in in cargo ships tanks. Jonty have you ever visited Kranji was graves, that may make an interesting video.
Just to let you know... This weekend is ching gay festival and thaipusan - indian festival where they carry the kavadi ... And pongol festival was two weekend s ago.... Fyi
We need to cultivate to buy second hand stuff. ..... There are just too much garbage and stuff thrown out. I just hope that govt can do more to educate recycling at grassroots levels.
Rarely and hardly hear these days, pre covid days unheard-of. Now worse. No more old newspaper old clothes collection. These uncle's many retired or not worth doing anymore. The last was asking if selling old liquor. Dying trade permanently. Nowadays community flyers collects these unwanted stuff

Karang guni market looks like a flea market in the west.

Wow. Hardly any second hand in SG compared to the UK. But there were a few people exploring it, which was good to see!
