    The blooming of this flower is amazing but what I saw the rest of the plants doing was incredible, they move, they clearly show they are alive and growing. I loved to see these beautiful live greenery moving gracefully. Nature is amazing.

      Question. We’re the rest of the plants moving away or towards the cadaver flower?

    I watched the 1993 film Dennis the Menace today and there's a scene with a flower that takes 40 years to grow before dying. I was curious about if it was based on a real fact and I've now found this amazing video. Seeing it die off after opening for only 24 hours made me a little sad. Beautiful stuff.

      But didn't the flower die because Dennis was yelling (for a good reason of course) as the plant was sensitive to loud noise during the blooming stage?

    I have seen and smelled this plant at a former neighbor's house. It smells like a rotting corpse. It is a tall plant. I believe it is dormant for seven years or so then blooms. Seeing this plant one time is more than enough.

    I loved seeing the leaves of the plant to the top left corner opening up and closing every 24 hours. Speeding it up it kinda looks like breathing - lungs expanding and shrinking. Nature is beautiful in how you can see the same patterns repeated in everything, including us humans!

    " ... all plants and all trees describe their Maker with numerous tongues in such a way that they leave those who study them in amazement, causing them to exclaim: "Glory be to God! How wonderfully they bear witness to Him!"
    Yes, the glorification of plants at the time their flowers open, and the moment they produce new shoots, and when they offer their smiling words is as beautiful and clear as themselves. For through the beautiful mouth of each flower and the tongues of its orderly shoots and the words of its well-measured seeds, the order demonstrates wisdom and is observedly within a balance which demonstrates knowledge. And the balance is within an embroidery of art which demonstrates skill and craft. And the embroidery of art is within an adornment which demonstrates favour and munificence. And the adornment is within subtle scents which demonstrate mercy and bestowal. And these meaningful qualities one within the other form such a tongue of testimony that it both describes the All-Beauteous Maker through His Names, and portrays Him through His attributes, and expounds the manifestation of His Names, and expresses His making Himself loved and known. "
    Risale-i Nur Collection
    "So observe the effects of the mercy of Allah - how He gives life to the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed, that [same one] will give life to the dead, and He is over all things competent."
    Qur'an 30:50
    You will not disappear.
    You will not rot under the ground
    Who created you from nothing;
    He will give body and life again.
    Infinite and will have a life worthy of human beings.
    Death will be the beginning of eternal life.

    This is my old history, my fraternal g-parents raised me from 3 months up, I went to Galveston when I was 12 and damn if my birth mom had one of these plants, she took care of it like a baby, DAMN I hated that plant for taking so much of my mother, she wasn’t around to see her children, but she adored this plant!!!!! I grew up to realize it was her loss, not mine!
    They are very strange plants and very lovely.

    A question regarding the plants in the background: Some of them seem to go limp at night and the the leaves fan back out around sunrise. I know a fair bit about what's going on inside the leaf cells around sunrise, but I've never heard anything about leaves that droop at night. What's going on with that?

      The umbrella was to protect the plant from the sun. These plants grow natively in the understory of trees in a tropical forest.

    • @djg5950
      @djg5950 8 років тому +3

      Ok. Thanks for answering. I thought that was what it was for but wasn't sure. Didn't think about it growing in a dense tropical area and not being in direct sunlight. It would probably get sunburned quite easily if in full sun. BTW, I came here because the weather channel is live on FB with a Corpse flower blooming and was curious about where it was from. Found that answer on UA-cam: Indonesia. Quite a few years ago (maybe 5 or 6 ?) they had one blooming on display at the Laconia, NH fire department that a local doctor grew and shared with the public when it bloomed.
