Dear Western Journalists: Please be informed that you're not the first journalist(s) to ask representatives and citizens of the North Korean regime if: 1.) The people's fervor and adoration for their dictator is, you know, _totally_ the real deal 2.) Who they think _really_ won the Korean War after they reply that they think they did 3.) If they're aware that the rest of the world thinks their leader is a batfuck crazy madman 4.) If they've personally read anything by Orwell 5.) if they have anything critical to say about the regime whatsoever ...or any other stupid questions you consider to be "hard-hitting." These people live under a constant fear that their lives and their families' lives can be instantly and forever wrecked by saying the wrong fucking thing and it ending up on camera. Believe it or not, and despite the media blackout they suffer under, the North Korean people are well aware of their situation, how the rest of the world perceives them, and how difficult their lives truly are. I can't tell you how many times I've seen some stupid Pulitzer-baiting journalist putting a North Korean citizen on the hotseat and asking difficult or dangerous questions for them to answer. Just fucking cut it out already.
I honestly didn't know wether to laugh or cry when that first NK woman in uniform went on her scripted rant about 'imperialist invaders'..... I was about to laugh, when she was finishing when..... at 2:36, you see her look to see who is watching........very sad.
Too true. Thanks for saying it. If you want to hear what it is really like in North Korea, ask a person who has escaped! Not one who is still a prisoner of the regime.
You have to feel sorry for Mr. Lee the tour guide. Doesn't exactly seem like an evil person. He doesn't arrange the tour, the Party members do. If he puts a foot wrong and lets those journos interview ppl they're not supposed to and visit places they're forbidden to enter then him or his family, or both, are fucked.
It's pretty obvious. There's rich people and poor people. They keep the poor people out of the city so they don't see the richness splattered in their face so there's less chance of political revolt. Otherwise they're just normal people. Everyone wants to go there and get the dirt... it's just a government that runs a short leash to keep absolute power in a country behind the times and a large division of classes. Clearly everyone there is grateful for what they DO have. Story finished.

Tim T. 2.3 million Americans are in prison... USA has the largest Prison Population Rate!!!! Everything about concentration camps in North Korea is BS propaganda.
Just another "documentary" about tourism in North Korea: they are all the same since 10 yrs! Same monuments, same comments, same complete lack of new information! waste of time
That's true, but I think it also is because there is no development in North Korea and the tours are controlled by the government, so the guides always show the same to everybody
North Korea looks like it would be a beautiful country but the leader is twisted and all the terrible things that happen there. I hope it gets a better leader in the future those people don't deserve him.
dewfan14 You see, funny thing is that your government hitting you with airplanes is a fact, DPRK's government putting People in work camp is speculation.
Ming Kim No its also fact because there is proof of it unlike there is proof of the government causing 9-11. So yeah North Korea is a terrible country with terrible leadership.
Ming Kim Look all around you and you will have your proof. Stop denying it, North Korea is a terrible country. Its also an evil country with an evil piece of shit leader.
I really wish people would stop judging North Korean people just because of the Kim family. I've met a couple of North Korean escapees and they are lovely people and they really just want help.
Thanks for sharing. While you didn't manage to uncover the true feelings of the North Korean people (in part because you only had access to the few privileged who live in Pyongyang, but also because you weren't even allowed to talk to them), at least you made an honest effort. Your positive approach may have left seeds which will generate good results in time as more future visitors do the same. .......... P.S. The North Korean people are steadily becoming more aware of the true nature of their situation, discontent is brewing beneath the surface and change is inevitable, so there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Misleading. The title had me thinking we might get some insightful interviews with North Korean expatriates. No Western reporter has ever "uncovered" anything of particular intrigue on a guided tour to Pyongyang. I've read the same banal accounts of journalists' variants on this exact tour so many times that I could probably do Mr. Lee's job for him. Contrasting the propaganda you were shown with the true stories of defectors' lives would have made this a good video.
It's pretty obvious. There's rich people and poor people. They keep the poor people out of the city so they don't see the richness splattered in their face so there's less chance of political revolt. Otherwise they're just normal people. Those kids that she met were put there to make it seem more humane - why else would they have known English? It's the same thing with the people that were so nicely dressed walking up and down the street.
Granted, they do learn English to have an edge on what they consider to be their enemy, the United States, but the facade they cloak the citizens in when visitors are present is planned. On China being backwards, well, I wouldn't say 'backwards.' I do find it strange that they allow so many of their citizens to die each day from their own pollution. Also, China doesn't necessarily rule over U.S. citizens. China has one strength aside from their military--they don't fear economic threats from the United States, and with good reason, be that the U.S. is their debtor. Also, don't think that I'm a patriot for Uncle Sam: you're talking to an Anarchist. I see nothing other than bloodshed spouting from patriotism. I'm one of the few Americans that has knowledge of their crimes in recent history--the Indochina Wars, Vietnam, East Timor, etc.
+12345 fin ...Only a very few well selected inner party members and a couple of thousand university students ever learn to speak English. Its not learned in any school in the DPRK.
+12345 fin Pyonyang is inhabited only by trusted party members. The whole city is a stage set 24/7 for the outside world. Not too much different than what the Nazis did with Berchtesgaden really. A model city showing the "prosperity" of the DPRK. Not the concentration camps where families serve multiple generations for what a family member committed. Or the country side that hasn't changed much from when the Japanese controlled the peninsula. The DPRK has started doing media tours of the countryside because of the press pointing out the Pyonyang fish bowel. But even those tours seem very controlled and excessively guided to show that farmers are happy, fit, and prosperous also. I saw 1 reporter that was on one of those tours point out that the "farmers" wore perfect make-up, didn't sweat, and never got dirty as they "toiled away" smiling constantly in the fields. The only ones that know the real North Korea are the ROK special forces teams that cover the countryside monitoring the military's shifting positions. The North has the same teams covering the ROK.
+12345 fin 'Those kids that she met were put there to make it seem more humane'- That's certainly true, and I recognize that criticizing the government is fatal. However, considering NK's steady population, and the fact that the country is supported by China, I struggle to imagine day to day life in NK being that much worse than in China.
People in North Korea are living their life as a forced competition between each other. They laugh when told to or cry when told to and whoever does it best might be able to get a better status and afford living their lifes without constant fear. Those children in the parades and shows spends days practicing it to perfection, they also have "self judging lessons" where they need to openly in class tell thier flaws and "sins" and shame thier classmates thr same way. I really hope this horrible way of living will stop one day.
Bullshit video, expecting something different taking into consideration the Title of the video, same old controlled propaganda scenery, very poor video indeed.
+Lkai Well how about you go to N. Korea and make your own video? EXACTLY! I agree, the video smacks of compliance with NK's control, but what else do you expect under these conditions. I still find the contents of the video fascinating. Learn to be more appreciative of those who risk a lot to bring you the entertainment that you watch.
+stylz1 Uhhh That was not the point. The tittle tells us to expect something extraordinary from what is already seen. Maybe for yourself you find it fascinating, but look at any other video that does not claim what this videos tittle states.
Ranga Hang Sometimes the strongest message is the one no one dares mutter. It's all what you take away from it. I take something away from all videos about this country.
stylz1 these people aren't some sick form of entertainment, there is horrific, inhuman suffering going on there and this kind of video simply aids in obscuring that fact...nothing worthy of appreciation.
"Reverence ALMOST TO A CULT"?! What do you get when you (forcefully) bow down to someone/ something, give it all the praises and glory, see it as the source of everything that is good, read/ study it life, deeds, and words, and fear it even when not present, and yet, you cannot talk about it, and cannot get out of it?
Wow it amazes me how far this country would go just to cover up the fact on how terrible their people are treated. All those guided tours are a huge fake paradise to trick everyone that there's nothing wrong with North Korea
+Stunnedstudios The thing is, all the bad stuff about NK has never been proven, it might be true but then again it might not be... the west uses propaganda and so does NK, so who is telling the truth, none of us will ever know.
It's pretty obvious. There's rich people and poor people. They keep the poor people out of the city so they don't see the richness splattered in their face so there's less chance of political revolt. @@jimtom5011using Google maps, search North Korean prison. there you will find so many concentration camps, even one is an amusement park that’s used as a detention center.
Given a democratic government this could be the most beautiful city in Asia, what I've always wondered is what goes on in every other NK city and town that they never show.
+reminder: They are already there. Permanent installation covering every corner and any sound made. I wonder if she found the camera hidden under the toilet ring getting close ups?
+Raidenway Lol, there are more of you brainwashed north Korea supporters? lol...well I guess I should expect them to be lurking around this kind of north korean propoganda. You also probably think it is perfectly ok for kim to have killed his uncle to gain more power right? Also, I don't know who told you the Us attacked north korea first, north korea was created when communists took it over (I forget if it was china or soviet union) then they attacked and almost took all of korea from the south koreans and American army stationed there to defend it, then we brilliantly took back all they had taken from south korea by cutting them off and the only reason we did not continue to retake north korea is because we got too close to China and then they joined the korean war and it was a back and forth untill eventually it paused with a ceasefire.
There are so many lovely people in North Korea, but the government is an ugly tyrant that unconditionally has to be loved by the people. I love the people but despise a regime that tell people what to do and punish them if they don't conform. It should be that the people or individuals have the right to be heard.
Have you ever wondered why some people are born into a life of misery while others are born into a safe environment and is talented, attractive, happy etc? Why does life seem so unfair sometimes? Its because everything is balanced. In reality everything is fair and balanced. Us humans, as physical matter, are victims of Newtons 3`d Law of motion like everything else that is physical. For every action there is an equal and oppositve reaction. If you are sucsessfull and happy in this life the opposite will happen in your next life or in another lifetime. The thing is, it will balance out sooner or later, everything is fair in the perfect cosmical system. So now when you know, it will take away all your reasons to be jealous, sad, mad or to wonder why things are the way they are. Google *Truthcontest* and read *The Present*. What is said will change you forever.
I`m impressed that Korean kids in Pyongyang seem to understand English well. It`s ironical that people in the most secluded country speak English better than Japanese on average.
I think that the Japanese are humble ... and need to be so. (I have some Japanese friend and most of them speak or at least know English). They don't want to look bigger or greater or smarter than they really is. Which is what I like about Japan.
It would have been pretty pointless trying to talk to a bunch of kids who did not speak English would it not? However not quite as stupid as assuming that because these children speak some English "that people in the most secluded country in the World speak better English than Japanese on average".
WOW! I can feel the suppression fear & restrictions just watching the video. I keep wondering why some of us live in lands where we're free to be & do & prosper, while others end up in places like that. Hope I'll find the answer during/after this life.
It's pretty obvious. There's rich people and poor people. They keep the poor people out of the city so they don't see the richness splattered in their face so there's less chance of political revolt. Otherwise they're just normal people. "It's hard to imagine any Australian politician getting a welcome like this." (5.40) The journalist here doesn't seem to realize that if you don't show the proper emotions at the proper times, you could get arrested. So there is fear underlying this emotion. But also, the results of years of indoctrination. The "welcome" that the Australian politicians would get is probably a sign of a healthier society.
I always feel kinda bad for the guides, I mean they are so often put in awkward situations with the tourists or journalists asking uncomfortable questions, & with the punishment for speaking against the gov't... they don't want to say the wrong thing, but they want to be a good host & present a specific image of DPRK. What a job! I hope Mr Lee didn't get in any trouble for the sudden trip to the skate park.
Journalists should respect what the North Koreans wanted to show in their country; besides that is their country; they have their own political views, culture, customs, and traditions. I love how they celebrate events - very organize and peaceful. Also, admire the North Korean's discipline and respect for their leader. Wherever you go in Asia the pictures of the nation's leader is everywhere and constituents are expected to show some form of respect like bowing. To bow to your leader or superior is common practice in Asia like Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, etc...
When they said “He thinks North Korea gets unfair treatment from the media” it made me think about how America is just as trustworthy as North Korea when it comes to what North Korea is like (if you’re going tae trust anyone about that stuff then trust the people who actually escaped North Korea)
Err No! If it said in TV report Australians have two heads, then anyone can go see for themselves. Being shown only a few uniheads in a guided tour in One city wouldn't cut it.
***** Wrong, they think the people are no different to the government and that the people want the same. You could be a member of parliament or average shmoe from North Carolina, everyone is vile and evil in the NK propaganda.
To whoever saying that this video was bad because no propaganda and 'sad and poor' North Korea was filmed... It isn't. Firstly, I am sure you came here just to see how bad North Korea is and that is something I see in many North Korea videos, but... This is surely a picture to pretty, but it definitely shows me that North Korea is normal. You don't have to live in a very strictly bound fear.
+Manav Doshi no , most of these stories that think are "far fetched " are actually not. This video is 150000"% fake and controlled by there "dear leader."
In 1930's there were a lot of western journalists and public figures invited to visit USSR (JB Shaw is one notable example), in a very choreographedd and organized way they were guided from one fake showcase to another and the purpose was to improve bad PR USSR was getting at that time. Obviously trips didn't include GULag, starving Ukraine and interviews with random citizens who were scared shiietless by the system anyways. See the same pattern?
They weren't putting internet in, they were fixing some of the old bugs that stopped working. I would imagine all of the computers they attached to that network have some malicious payload on them
Mr. Lee!!! That's the same tour guide that Shane had in his Vice documentary "Inside North Korea"!! I LOVE MR LEE! He's a funny grouchy north korean! lol :D
A country where you get arrested and end starving in prison courtesy of the government; for having chickens in the backyard of a ranch, is truly the worst country in the world.
Where did you uncover true feelings of the people? We can't see that in your documentary. You didn't even manage to give us some new information. Much more information about DPRK was given from VICE documentaries or similar sources, those are real investigative journalism.
This lady is not playing her game of words to well, she is not atrocious. Remember all this regimented lifestyle is what they want her to see so let her see it. It proves beyond reasonable doubt that their lives are plays with parts to play and nothing of choice.
It's funny when you see a "documentary" about the life in NK all you EVER see is outsiders being escorted to very specific hotels and are taken on extremely controlled tours of what THEY want you to see. You are shown building after building and shrine after shrine honoring their past and current leaders. The people who appear to work and play all around seem so content and blissful, as it's all part of the act. Ask to be taken into the mountains to find a local family to interview or even mention the concentration camps and the party is over right there. Don't even think about approaching a random person hoping to get some sort of dialogue either, they know they too would "disappear" as well and are told never to make eye contact with any outsiders. The ones they ARE allowed to speak with have been strongly coached and know what they are and aren't allowed to say. The people live and act accordingly out of fear for themselves and their family. I know because I had a friend whose Father was in the Korean war and managed to smuggle a woman out who he married. They live in constant fear and are sheltered heavily from the outside world. The last thing a dictator wants is his people educated outside of their agendas and ideologies. You would be exiled forever for even thinking of it. Yeah, great country to live in.
People rippin on the reporter asking these question as if this story was released *yesterday* This piece is almost a quarter of a centry old. All of the kind are adults now.
The horrors of the country are real. People who grew up in NK and escaped have made it clear how terrible NK is. It's not the media, the country is a nightmare.
Anyone with any knowledge of military equipment would quickly realize that all of their equipment is at least 60 years old and nearly useless. They force all of the men to be slaves in the military for 10 years with no pay. For the women it's even worse as they are treated beyond brutally and must serve for 7 years again with no pay. They waste billions of dollars on useless military missiles while their people starve. You made no attempt to see how the average person lives outside of the capital... It is disturbing as it is disgusting and hopeless. Those who tried to leave are often imprisoned for the balance of their lives or executed. This place is far worse than Russia during Stalin! It is pure evil!
Catch 22 They tricked the Germans into selling some to them, they also have a captured sample of the MQM-107 that they acquired from Syria, which they are working to reverse engineer.
Rickey AA It tells us that they are cunning bastards with the ability to trick a nation into selling them hardware that can easily be converted for military use (If I recall correctly, the choppers that they purchased were originally civilian models that were converted for military use).
i'm jealous that north korean's kids are decent and i don't understand why the rest of the countries kids wants adult activity like that's stupid, kids supposed to be behave a proper way like a normal kids/teenagers they should never get exploited to disgusting adult stuff for not knowing they supposed to have them for their marriage or for someone who they love and not just thinking adult activity is fun, so disgusting, agree?
At 01:52 she vists a 60th anniversary honoring the soldiers who were killed during the war. The voice over says "60 years after the war, there is no denying the grief is still very real", she then speaks to a woman about 'the loss of her husband' the woman goes on about the evil USA. When you look at the grave stone he died in September 1996, there was no reported action between NK and the US or ROK forces on that date. Would have been better if they had explained that a little better.
She didn't mention if she ever got the internet - doubt it. Hitler used to have similar military parades, & the mass games are just a civvy version of the same. The people have no option but to look as if they're happy, can you imagine if they behaved in the way we might at a military parade - here in the UK there would be just as many protesters! No shops - why don't reporters ever mention that; no police either, but then a whole nation brainwashed with some kind of worship drug doesn't need cops, only fear itself!

Zachary McDowall they would not let her report in a prison camp.
"My first real glimpse of the city lights"
*Darkness*
The naivety of this reporter is actually embarrassing to watch! Was she bribed by North Korean officials?!?
Everyone wants to go there and get the dirt... it's just a government that runs a short leash to keep absolute power in a country behind the times and a large division of classes. Clearly everyone there is grateful for what they DO have. Story finished.

HEY MR LEE!! HE WAS ALSO THE TOUR TO THE VICE DOCUMENTARY XD
Who got more freedom, north koreans in the labour camps or the "free" north koreans?
She definitly didnt do a lot of research about North Korea,
this isnt a interesting documentation at all.
Their impromptu installation of the internet would be a death sentence for any North Korean citizen who did that without permission.
Ranga Hang
Sometimes the strongest message is the one no one dares mutter. It's all what you take away from it. I take something away from all videos about this country.
stylz1 these people aren't some sick form of entertainment, there is horrific, inhuman suffering going on there and this kind of video simply aids in obscuring that fact...nothing worthy of appreciation.
3:57 They Spelt her name wrong. It's Oh Mi-ran, not Oh Mi-run.
@@jimtom5011 little bit true but we know and I'm sure it's been proven NK are not free at all

+Lardian Don't you think they would if they could?
+AsapNicky Bars Well these people seem to be really contempt with north korea even though they only saw Pyongyang.
You are brainwashed my friend. I feel sorry for you.
Raidenway. Well then just go over there and resettle in North Korea. They might like you.

And better than the French
It would have been pretty pointless trying to talk to a bunch of kids who did not speak English would it not? However not quite as stupid as assuming that because these children speak some English "that people in the most secluded country in the World speak better English than Japanese on average".
Elite kids. Elite schools. Not all kids did understand even though guide chose this group.

This is the first NK tour video I've seen that is allowing the kids to talk to the journalist. That's a HUGE leap forward.
I love how it’s the same Lee from Vice’s Inside North Korea who got drunk with Shane Smith lmao.
Why would you want to go there.my first cue to leave is when they ask for my pass port as well as my other papers....cya

This is Pyongyang(touristpropogandaland) not the average north Korean life.
mark1237889 I know, but all the documentaries that i have seen about the DPRK have been a little too far fetched
+Manav Doshi no , most of these stories that think are "far fetched " are actually not. This video is 150000"% fake and controlled by there "dear leader."

oh its the same guide. I ve seen him in a similar video where he got pretty drunk after few drinks and almost got into an argument with the reporter.
North Korea looks like a beautiful place! I wish the North Korean government would just stop making threats and fix the rural areas
I would imagine all of the computers they attached to that network have some malicious payload on them
good ol mr lee have been appearing a few docos now
Mr. Lee!!! That's the same tour guide that Shane had in his Vice documentary "Inside North Korea"!! I LOVE MR LEE! He's a funny grouchy north korean! lol :D
The Korean War never ended . A peace treaty was never signed .

A country where you get arrested and end starving in prison courtesy of the government; for having chickens in the backyard of a ranch, is truly the worst country in the world.
A minor thing, but I've always thought that weird jerky marching the North Koreans do must play havoc with your back and joints.
Oh you carry a canon... why not nikon? I think the picture is much better.
2:32, Can anyone say brain washed!!!!! Sad.
Where did you uncover true feelings of the people? We can't see that in your documentary. You didn't even manage to give us some new information. Much more information about DPRK was given from VICE documentaries or similar sources, those are real investigative journalism.
love the vid, makes me want to visit pyongyang.
Why on earth would they ( the world powers ) let these people get weapons like this???? Why in deed.
+John Rider same reason why world powers let the likes of isis get weapons etc, they make money from it.
Jim Tom Yes. And it is leading up to their goal of order out of chaos.
By the way, Mr. Lee and three generations of his family are now in prison...
what do you think happen with mr.Lee after this?
This lady is not playing her game of words to well, she is not atrocious. Remember all this regimented lifestyle is what they want her to see so let her see it. It proves beyond reasonable doubt that their lives are plays with parts to play and nothing of choice.
Well said. I agree 100%.
These so-called "journalists" are going on the same controlled diorama every time.
I love how they're sitting with an Irish bottle of whiskey!
Great vid. Thank you :D
8:59 He's digging hard for something... 😂
Why do they ask such stupid questions that can get them thrown out the country or killed. (Are they pretending?)
Mr Lee is a very nice person, but he cannot say his true feeling because his family would be in grave danger.
Wouldn't you say, she puts him in danger?
Socialism or capitalism that is their choice, what really matters is their struggle against US imperialism which is still active, not only in 1960s.
what's the name of the journalist?
5:40 "It's hard to imagine any Australian politician getting a welcome like this." LMAO 😂 (All hail the great generalissimo Comrade Gillard!) Hahahaha
This TRUTH about North korea: (please share this).

I always get North Korea mixed up with the Falkland Islands...
she really asked a North Korean if people are faking emotions during the parade? She really did that as a western journalist?
People rippin on the reporter asking these question as if this story was released *yesterday*
This piece is almost a quarter of a centry old. All of the kind are adults now.
Thank you for this video.
This journalist would land herself in jail when she said are the people faking (pretending) their feeling about their leader!
@ 7:25 wtf? isnt that American MD 500??
*****
same here i was like wait wtf
watch?v=QL_3Qg-SADY @11:00
Catch 22
They tricked the Germans into selling some to them, they also have a captured sample of the MQM-107 that they acquired from Syria, which they are working to reverse engineer.
so they r using our military light helicopters what does that tells us? humm
Rickey AA
It tells us that they are cunning bastards with the ability to trick a nation into selling them hardware that can easily be converted for military use (If I recall correctly, the choppers that they purchased were originally civilian models that were converted for military use).
After this documentary, the word 'Pretend' is outlawed
i'm jealous that north korean's kids are decent and i don't understand why the rest of the countries kids wants adult activity like that's stupid, kids supposed to be behave a proper way like a normal kids/teenagers they should never get exploited to disgusting adult stuff for not knowing they supposed to have them for their marriage or for someone who they love and not just thinking adult activity is fun, so disgusting, agree?
+Margaret M Anybody who lives under fear will be "decent" at all times, that is for sure!
How many people died in the concentration camps while she was yucking it up? Shame on you.
Just a heads up the Korean War never ended they only signed a cease fire treaty. So the war is still going on to this very day
They aren't allowed to have their own opinions
