  • The former US President Jimmy Carter has died aged 100. He died at home in Plains, Georgia. His son said he was "a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love”.
A former peanut farmer, Jimmy Carter became president in the turbulent aftermath of the Watergate scandal, promising never to lie to the American people.
On the international stage he helped broker an historic peace agreement between Egypt and Israel. However he struggled to deal with the Iran hostage crisis and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
After a single term in office, he was swept aside by Ronald Reagan when he won just six states in the 1980 election.
After leaving office Jimmy Carter became a campaigner for international peace, the environment and human rights, for which he was recognised with a Nobel Peace prize.
The longest-lived president in US history, he celebrated his 100th birthday in October 2024.
Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Gary O’Donoghue and Tom Bateman in Washington.

Jimmy was a great man and greater former president. While being a mediocre President. Decent doesn't make a great US President. Decent makes a great man and ambassador for good causes. But for a US President, decent got him voted out.

@@odanedmcdonald I would argue that it wasn't decency that got him voted out, but the decisions of his predecessors. The Iran hostage crisis was ultimately a product of decades of US foreign policy, and inflation during his time was ultimately a product of America's support for Israel during one of its many wars with Middle East nations, resulting in the OPEC boycott. The hard truth is that both of these things would have happened no matter who was president. The fact is that Carter was president at an unlucky time, while Reagan was president at an extremely lucky time. Had the two presidents served in opposite terms, it's very likely that Jimmy Carter would be viewed with the same reverence as Teddy Roosevelt or FDR, whereas Reagan would probably be viewed as one of the worst presidents in American history.

I'm not actually interested in watching the video, being a elderly person myself I remember his Presidency and am aware of the path of his long life. I just felt the need to comment on a man who dedicated his entire live to public service and compassion for all persons and especially those struggling to live in an increasingly un-caring world. If it were a requirement for politicians to have the empathy for fellow human beings that he possessed, the bulk of the worlds wrongs would fade to a bad dream. Unfortunately, reality dictates this shall not be so. He was one of a very few, and we will be lucky to see another like him in the next 100 years. Rest in Peace Mr. Carter, you certainly deserve it.

But with society being increasingly secularized it’s inevitable, Carter got his character, humility and honesty from his strong Christian faith. A man who could relate to rural Christian conservatives, black people, northern liberals, southern segregationists, truly a different time. May he rest in peace. We shall not see the likes of him again, unfortunately.
