The Nightmare Poem by Harrison Allen
I am the He Who Lurks In Your Dreams
I hold the key to terror and screams
I ever serve Sleep, to whom Death is wed
I constantly creep, to serve till I’m dead
All that you know is known as a lie
Ever you grow and then you will die
Everything here is summoned for thee
All that you fear has now been set free
Writhe here in sorrow, your horror and fight
No peace ‘til morrow, but still it is night
Scream if you’d please, but no one will hear
Only the trees will stand close and near
Once you had friends, but now they are gone
Friendships reach ends, as night becomes dawn
Once you were younger, but youth does decay
Once you had hunger, but gave it away
He Is Your Mayor doth rule this fair town
But only a layer, for Sleep wears the crown
You are not yet dead, just lost in his maze
A world painted red with light from his gaze
Soon you shall meet Your Deathly Demise
But when you greet, she’ll wear a disguise
Few things are certain, but certain is death
Let fall the curtain, and draw thy last breath
You cannot believe this place you abhor
You cannot conceive the secrets in store
You cannot perceive your days long before
You never shall leave Welcome to Darkmoor!

Here is a sight to behold
    One that won't grow old
    A tale that's seen
Through dream-like images, it would seem
    Visuals are blended with sound
To create an eerie atmosphere all around
A nightmare that keeps the viewer engaged
A town which is rather deranged
It is true that many brickfilms have tried to be scary
    To feature monsters so hairy
But none succeeded so well or so great
Than this film that I did anticipate
I suppose stories like this are what great brickfilmers are for
    Welcome to Darkmoor

Well congratulations. You've got me psychoanalyzing this thing and trying to determine if there is deeper meaning hidden behind the characters' names, their lines, and the poem. This was incredibly original, incredibly intriguing, and incredibly well-executed. Makes me want to know more about Welcome to Darkmoor, and the people who live there, and how they came to be there. And those are my favorite kinds of stories. The ones that leave me with a lot of questions. Now... I'm going to go to sleep. And I'm not going to wait for sleep to find me. And if I hear the voices of any of these characters while I'm sleeping, you're paying for the therapy.

This is fantastic. The usual quirkiness of your work is still present, but framed in a very different, more eerie light; the result is a film that tries to be creepy and succeeds by not trying to hard and showing restraint in the right places. It also helps that it's incredibly well shot, very well voiced, wonderfully scored, _and_ well written.
Also, those drawings in the background early on were really good as well.
That five years paid off in terms of the final product. I applaud you.

An absolutely stunning work! Possibly even your Magnum Opus!
There's so many interesting techniques here, including the colour-tinted lighting you've described previously on social media and so many well-calculated camera movements. Your unique style of writing and absurd sense of humour are the strong suit in many of your films, and they lend themselves remarkably well to this concept. Not to mention the masterful cinematography, and top-notch voice acting that is (As one should expect from Sir Squid) far above the brickfilm standard.
I'd agree with many others that this is one of if not the best brickfilm of 2019. I can't wait to see what you have in store for us next!
On a related note, I have a few questions about the film's lighting: What was your setup like for the sequence at 5:00? Did you manually move the lamp, or was it on a rig or some kind? I have the same question about the shots starting at 6:35 and 6:39, though I imagine different techniques were used. Also, knowing your preferences for in-camera effects when possible, I'm assuming that 6:53 was done practically. What material were you using for the backdrop that's between the light and the minifigure?
Anyway, this is a fascinating film! Congratulations!

    • @AnnoyingNoisesProductions
      @AnnoyingNoisesProductions  4 роки тому +2

Thanks! Lots of really good questions here.
5:00 these shots form what I call the blackout sequence, and they are the only shots in the entire film that were not animated in my studio. Rather I set the camera and figures atop a teacart and animated it moving through a hallway at night, the only source of light being from an open bathroom door. I kept a small set under the camera to keep the minifigures in place, and ran back and forth with each character in the film to have a shot of them lit from each side. These can then be combined with other takes by setting the opacity to "screen"
6:35 This shot of the skeleton is a simple lamp animation, however, the 6:39 shot is what I'd call an "exposure animation" which I did by changing the exposure of the camera every frame. The animation of the well light building up then has another frame screened atop it, and this provides the grey light around the well to contrast the red. Since it's a static shot, I only had to take a single frame of the grey light for this. The entire set is elevated to facilitate the illusory cliff at the edge of town. So I thought it'd be a golden opportunity to set it up so I could shine some light in there for something in the dream.
6:53 This shot uses a simple sheet of paper as the background with a flashlight lighting it in such a way that it has a completely in shot vignette. The lighting animation is also done by simply changing the camera's exposure.

I really like the naming twist, and how the town makes you forget that there was anything beyond Welcome to Darkmoor. I think it's like a meta-commentary about the film itself: technically, this movie doesn't actually show us anything beyond the town itself and the roads that lead to it, so you could say that none of the places the protagonist wanted to go to even existed.

Fantastic. I once had a similar experience on the Australian countryside in a little town called collector. Now I'm just waiting for The Colour War.

The execution of this stopmotion is amazing, the quality only something I can aspire to at this point in time, simply put, Well done! This is amazing, I love the use of the black and white, with the Red making everything feel so sinister, AMAZING job!
