I would love the video about plant addiction and compulsion. I literally cannot stand a week without plant mail. And it’s starting to get to me. It’s so much money too. I wish I could chill out. I feel like I need help lol. Looking forward to your video!
I started with plants in the early 70's after my first husband died. I never stopped. Some of the plants I have now I have had for over 40 years. I know over all the years I have usually kept my plant numbers down to about 100. My second hubby died in 2016 and because I am alone now and will stay this way my plants exploded in numbers. My plants took over my whole house. I do do youtube but have no goals or interest in being monetized. I only do it because a friend talked me into it. I want no pressure no fancy camera and no editing. Your videos are really nice.
wow I aspire to be like you one day with plants around me that have been living for decades 💚 I'm honored that my videos appeal to you since I try to make up for my lack of experience in growing with enthusiasm for the hobby. 😅 honestly, the lower the expectations you have in UA-cam, the happier you will be.
Anytime a Hoya video comes on, I’m a happy camper. But I like unboxing, repotting, potting, Q&A. That type of things. It keep you talking and doing at the same time.
You are a “ nurturing person “ , I am too. I love to care for them all, and love to see my babies grow. I love figuring out what my plants need and seeing them respond. I say this about myself and know you are the same. When I get overwhelmed, I know I can’t give my plants what they need, so learning to limit my collection is the way to always feel the wonder and joy of indoor gardening. I never get bored with your Hoya talk , so please keep sharing. I have a friend who’s not really into plants but sees my passion for them. She found me a coffee mug that says “my plants get me” somehow that’s all I need to know😉. Plants and pets are what we can pour ourselves into without judgement.
omg I need that mug, so funny! 😆 thanks for the lovely comments and always making me feel seen Kathryn. 💜 there's lots of hoya lovers on my channel, so I'll definitely keep that content coming. thank you!
Well said! I enjoyed your video and looking forward to the next. I love my "small" plant collection. (About 100) I love walking around and looking at each one and how they have changed. I also love spa day for my plants. The first week of each month, everyone gets a complete check up and a wash in the sink or shower. It takes a few days but it does bring me joy :) Welcome back from your plant burnout!
This is a thought-provoking video. I have had a hell year (getting old is not for the faint of heart) and bought over 50 plants from June until now. I know now that I was doing it to relive some of my distress. Most were cuttings and babies. I had no idea how much work it would be, not to mention the 70 or so I already had. I was so overwhelmed, but it is getting a little better. My plan is to get my collection under control by not buying any plants until spring and being ultra intentional about it. I am also downsizing and not propagating unless I am saving a plant or giving it as a gift. Ana, I am sure I am one of your biggest fans and will watch you no matter what. I find you thoughtful, intelligent, and sensitive. Don't shy away from topics you care about, if some people won't hang, well too bad for them. 🍀
thank you so much Helene for the kind words 🥺 that means more than you'll ever know. I am sorry to hear about your struggles last year and hope your health will stabilize or improve this year. sending hugs and much love! 💜
I prefer to watch this kind of content. I like chore and repot videos. My first round of plant hobby was in the 90's then my kids required more time from me. I restarted my journey 2 years ago.
Here’s an idea- if you wanted to see if you could make some cash off the plants you’re getting rid of you could see if you could sell them as a lot to a local small business! My friend owns a shop called beyondtheleaf in Utah and she seems open to that kinda stuff!❤ Your mood board is soooooo cute!! I need to try making one for fun!!
You’ve done really well at connecting with us. I’ve asked you so many questions and you’ve taken the time to answer every one of them. I really appreciate it
Ana! You’re my favorite planty UA-camr hands down. Your videos always drop at the perfect time and you’re so relatable bc you keep it real and talk about things we actually want to hear lol (using your platform for greatness straight out the gate). You also don’t sugar coat anything. I love all of your videos. I found you channel bc of your anthurium repot video but I was drawn in further by the hoya content. Anything hoya and anthurium I love. Plant care, plant resets, repots, propagating, maybe some of how you handle a growing collection and making room for everything. I also do like hearing more person life things 😊
aww your comment melted my heart 🥺 that's so nice of you to take the time to say. I try my best, so it's really rewarding getting positive feedback. and duly noted for content ideas in the future, thanks! 💜
Thank you so much Ana! I love all of your videos, whether it’s plant related or personal. I have all my plants in semi hydro (that’s how I found your channel) so I want to really focus on getting them amazing. I vibe with this channel so much. It’s real and I appreciate it so much! I sure hope Luca recovers quickly ❤️ 🐾
oh yay I'm glad my semi-hydro video brought in people! I'll work to keep the vibes going this year 💯 thank you! he's already much better out of the cone 🥰
2 seconds in to this video, and I had at least one thing figured out 🤣🐶 You'll be successful with your channel focus because you have an interesting perspective on life, have lived enough of it, and can reflect upon it in an engaging way. It's absolutely gauche to mention one's own channel in the comments, but here we go (since I know you watched it). The video I put up on rare plants, R.I.P., is at 9800 views, over 200 new subscribers, and 850 watch hours on a very short video (it is also, by far, the lowest ad rate I've ever gotten since being monetized 🤣😂🤣). Those are big numbers for a small channel, indicating that people were up for hearing that message. To me, that's a really good sign. Indeed, anyone can hold up a plant, or take us shopping. Honesty, introspection, talent and personality are far rarer. Finally, killer thumbnail. That's your best so far. And the filming looks (and sounds) fan-freaking-tastic! Goals.....
omg yes Dave, I saw your video blew up! or well, blew up for this small niche lol. 😂 I'm so happy for you! but also, I know. January sucks for ad revenue 😢 yay! thank you, I'm glad a fellow creator notices the change. it's ironic that the videos I'm most proud of are killed off by the algorithm but oh well. still glad to make content that makes me happy since that's important, right?
I fell in love getting more plants last March 2024 from 25 plants to 100 then start watching and learning about Hoya which i love more each day and now i have over 200 plants😊not so much with Anthurium my less favorite plants ☺️sorry. Thank you Ana for sharing your love of plants to us. I learn from watching your content. More power to you! All the best to us all this year 2025🥰
Thank you for making videos on this topic. I hope it will help many people 😊 You are so open about these things, thank you so much for sharing your process and your thoughts I’ve had it once in 2022 when I had thrips for half a year I was manually checking my plants fully twice a week for months, and while that helped save my plants…. The thrips only left after using beneficial bugs for a couple of consecutive months I knew I had to keep going or thrash plants to keep the thrips under control, so I just kept at it… but during and afterwards plantcare became more of a chore than fun. We solved it by moving the plants from upstairs into the living room and rehoming most of what didn’t aesthetically fit (the living room was not about to become a jungle). This meant getting rid of a lot of the larger Philodendrons, but to be honest I don’t really miss them 😅 After that I had around 80 plants for a while, it was comfortable, but I also missed some of the plant care. Then the Hoyas entered the house as cuttings… now I heard that they grow slowly and don’t do much for quite a while (and since I grew Hoya kerrii from a cutting before I believed that)….. so I bought quite a bunch of them at once… That was a mistake haha, those one node cuttings grew into trellis needing plants so quickly! Starting up a lot of Hoyas at once, is a lot of work…. The rooting, potting, upsizing, trellising, rearranging to fit everyone, finding the right spots for them all…. And not to forget all the supplies that need to be purchased in the process… I started to feel the overwhelm that leads to burnout again. What helped was starting the process of downsizing again, slowly this time, since the plants were new, but working on downsizing, knowing that I am doing something to fix the problem, solves about half of the problem. I have now learned where my limit is, the amount of plants that I shouldn’t exceed and that is very helpful 😊 Watching others on here dealing with their plants helped as well… Though all the hauls and shopping and “must have plants/staples” that are pushed…. those things are getting annoying (for me personally I mean) However… “social media” is also a “problem”. While I can easily downsize the plants that I was influenced to buy, that just didn’t fit me (even though they are pretty and I do get their appeal but somehow didn’t fit what I want to see)…. Theres also the ones that I still have and sort of like but don’t really “need”, but do keep around because I know Ill buy them again after a while…. Because they do sort of fit my “aesthetic” (eww that term) and I will keep seeing them everywhere all the time. If I wasn’t watching videos here… it would have been easier to rehome more plants faster. One of my downsizing questions is literally “will I want this again if I see other people growing it”… because that is a thing As for content… I like Hoya care content Hearing about your experiences with your Hoyas (sorry Im just into Hoyas mainly 😆) Things like this about plant burnout I find interesting as well I like videos about downsizing/purges as well, especially when they explain the why for each plant And also why you love a certain plant Plant cleaning/plant care Plant rearranging Long term plant updates (with pictures or a short vid part from like half a year or a year or longer back) Dealing with issues that you have with plants (pests, rerooting etc) can be helpful Something that may be interesting for people who are struggling with plant burnout “questions to ask before buying a new plant” “how to intentionally/mindfully buy plants” (Probably lots more but this is what came to mind now) Not like as much Hauls/shopping/wishlists (though I do watch them sometimes… I often get annoyed, probably with myself since I know deep down that watching those will not help me or make me feel better in any way)
thank you for taking the time to send all this feedback! it was extremely helpful. 😊 thrips are no joke and small hoya cuttings seem like not a big deal until you're dealing with a whole army of them lol. 😅 also, that is such a good question to ask! "will I want this again if I see other people growing it" I'm going to film my downsizing video soon, so I'll make a note to remember that. 🙂 huuuuge thank you for the list of ideas for content! and I totally feel you on shopping videos.
Yes! I love the styling idea. I want to use my plants in a decorative way. Not just a bunch of plants on a shelf. Love your whole topic(s) in this video!
I think you have to figure out your max capacity. I’ve decided that 120 is my max. I am at about 110 right now and that’s even better. I think it’s a vicious cycle with plants because overall they don’t do much. To keep it interesting you need lots of them so that’s why you keep adding them. I think I’m getting over the collecting part after collecting the past 4.5 years. I have 3 or 4 that I want to get this year, but that’s all I intend to add to the collection. The biggest problem is that shopping for them is just so much fun and I tend to get caught up in the moment. I have several that I’m going to put outside in the spring. After that, they usually get tossed in the woods for compost. They’re struggling for whatever reason so it’s get tough or die. I enjoy starting them over and I have several that are ready for that. I think the collecting is the biggest problem of the hobby and my goal is to be better about that. I can still shop. I just don’t have to buy every time. It’s a work in progress for sure.
very wise words! I've only been in the hobby for almost 2.5 years, so it's now my turn to learn about balance. also, I learned patience is a virtue in this hobby, and I feel people get around this by buying new plants. however, it's almost like cheating? if that makes sense. hope to find my max capacity number soon!
Love all your content Ana specially the Hoya content🫣. I know you’re in California so stay safe! I just read Benji’s Plant community post and my heart and prayers are going out to him and Chris.
thank you! and we are, we are on the central coast so hours away from LA. omg I didn't even know, and I just read his post. 😢 how heartbreaking 💔 everyone who lost their homes. it's just incredibly sad but knowing a planty person lost their safe space is just awful.
Hi! Just actually wanted to clarify about you opening up an IRA. I work for a financial wealth management firm. An IRA is an individual retirement account so it can be opened regardless of if you’re married or not. The advantage the you’re married is if you or your spouse are out of work but the other is still working, you can still contribute to it so long as you file your taxes jointly. I think you’re thinking of a brokerage account. That can also be opened as an individual account or a joint account. I highly suggest finding a financial advisor to help you navigate that.
OMG so psyched about your video!!! I need to work on everything you talked about! Please keep these videos coming. You talk so sensibly and realistically. You have an amazing collection. Let’s face it tho if we keep buying we’re not focusing and appreciating what we have already. I realized I was starting to do that. My spending was getting out of control. Also, I think I’m done with all the pink variegations. I can’t afford the high variegations and what I do purchase- reverts! This is a great hobby, I don’t want to let poor impulse control ruin it.
thank you for the feedback! very well said about poor impulse control. I think we've all fallen down the same rabbit hole. but it's not too late to turn it around for us. 🙂 best of luck with your collection this year!
I def had plant burn out this year. It comes along with depression. I can’t keep up when get depressed. And that happens periodically despite being on two anti depressants. So I deal and keep watering at least every few days.
I’m 💯 this year will be about chores videos, information on plant care, styling and curation of plants setting them for spotlight treatment instead of indoor jungle looks
After nearly 3 years of building my plant collection, it’s now overwhelming and stressing me out. My care routine has slipped, so I’m downsizing to just the plants I love, keeping one of each. I’m also selling plants too, which makes it tricky to separate what I’m keeping from what’s for sale. Managing all this with ADHD is tough-I really need to get diagnosed and start medication!
I can imagine! seeking treatment can be a game changer. selling plants already makes downsizing easier. I'm planning on doing 5 or 10 plants here and there instead of all at the same time. maybe that could help you! 🙂
@ good idea! Thanks :). Also, the ones I’m keeping will be transferred to semi hydro because I’m a severe underwaterer lol. Like my big Thai con is thriving in Leca :).
Super relatable, Ana! I’ve been feeling the same with my collection. The end of 2024 and start of this year I downsized about 30 plants and feel a lot better. I think what overwhelms me is having a bunch of tiny plants that I often forget to water 🙈
yess! I totally relate. I thought by making a ton of propagations of bigger plants that would somehow lessen the work, but oh man did I learn my lesson 😆
I think many people are burned out from influencing and social media in general. I know I am tired of being marketed to by corporations , and many of us are sick of overconsumption . It will be interesting to see if this de influence movement puts a dent in retail this year
I think, in part, it's already hitting the small business plant shops. unfortunately, even more have started to close down. the tides are definitely shifting away from "gotta have them all"
This video was fabulous and very thought-provoking! I've never actually asked myself why I got into the plant hobby 🤔 I'm 100% addicted to buying plants! It's crazy. I have about 225 plants, not including props. I'm really looking forward to your next video!
monthly downsizing seems much more manageable! I think that's probably what I'll end up doing. lessen my collection over time. thanks for watching Mary! 💚
You have an interesting thought process and unique voice. I think some plant documentaries would be fun in 2025. Like "The origin of the Burle Marx Flame" or something like that.
I love your channel. I trust your judgement. An aside, where do you get your little Hoya prop capsules? for lack of a better word? You're the only one I see using them.

You are so open about these things, thank you so much for sharing your process and your thoughts
I’ve had it once in 2022 when I had thrips for half a year
I was manually checking my plants fully twice a week for months, and while that helped save my plants…. The thrips only left after using beneficial bugs for a couple of consecutive months

One of my downsizing questions is literally “will I want this again if I see other people growing it”… because that is a thing
As for content…
I like Hoya care content
Hearing about your experiences with your Hoyas (sorry Im just into Hoyas mainly 😆)
Things like this about plant burnout I find interesting as well
I like videos about downsizing/purges as well, especially when they explain the why for each plant
And also why you love a certain plant
Plant cleaning/plant care
Plant rearranging
Long term plant updates (with pictures or a short vid part from like half a year or a year or longer back)
Dealing with issues that you have with plants (pests, rerooting etc) can be helpful
Something that may be interesting for people who are struggling with plant burnout “questions to ask before buying a new plant” “how to intentionally/mindfully buy plants”
(Probably lots more but this is what came to mind now)
Not like as much
Hauls/shopping/wishlists (though I do watch them sometimes… I often get annoyed, probably with myself since I know deep down that watching those will not help me or make me feel better in any way)
thank you for taking the time to send all this feedback! it was extremely helpful. 😊 thrips are no joke and small hoya cuttings seem like not a big deal until you're dealing with a whole army of them lol. 😅
also, that is such a good question to ask! "will I want this again if I see other people growing it" I'm going to film my downsizing video soon, so I'll make a note to remember that. 🙂

great goals to have, wishing you the best of luck growing this year! 💚
I love your anthurium and favorites videos!
I am feeling this too! 😊
Ana Very Nice .good works
I'm really looking forward to your next video!
lol I think we all are or were to a certain extent addicted to buying plants. thank you, hope you like it too! 😊
I'm also downsizing probably 5 to 10 at a time. Maybe monthly until I feel less crowded. Never thought about how much space grown out plants take up😂
monthly downsizing seems much more manageable! I think that's probably what I'll end up doing. lessen my collection over time. thanks for watching Mary! 💚
Plants give us love, like our children. They grow with our care.Ike our children, or pets.
You have an interesting thought process and unique voice. I think some plant documentaries would be fun in 2025. Like "The origin of the Burle Marx Flame" or something like that.
thank you so much and I'll look into that 😊
I love your channel. I trust your judgement. An aside, where do you get your little Hoya prop capsules? for lack of a better word? You're the only one I see using them.
thank you so much! 💜 and on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B0C5MCJTL9
just be aware there's nil you can do about saving the caps once the roots grow
Very nice Ana 😊
thank you! 💚
Great video 🎉 Happy New Year🎉.
Your face...it's perfect... Did you grow it yourself?😊
thank you! LOL no I have to credit that to my mother. happy new year! 🙂
Great video
thank you so much! 🥰
Change is very hard. Good or bad.
👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️❤️
See, you didn’t need to “do something” to talk.
