- Throughout my time diving into the Los Angeles cactus and succulent scene of instagram handles, parking lot sales and cactus shows I have become friends with David Valera better known by his online moniker @_Selegna_sol_ . Today we linked up to kick it in his home made back yard greenhouse to take a look at how he takes on the task of caring for his beautiful collection of desert plants and keeping them dry and pest free in the winter months.

David’s collection is remarkable. His plants are staged beautifully and his greenhouse is the most hi-tech greenhouse that I’ve seen for a backyard collector of cacti and succulents. 😃👍🏼

He has a 16.5' x 8' backyard greenhouse. Serious collecter.
I just ordered Echinocactus polycephalus, Cotton Cactus, seeds from Utah. That is a common species but it survives in, and is endemic to, arid cold desert areas. Its long red colored spines are quite pretty. Its a sort of clumping red barrel cactus.

I love this greenhouse! I've been wanting to build one like this but the hail storms we get in Denver Metro would decimate those panels for sure.

Hahaha!!! From one thing I've learned, since I moved from your area(Temple city) 38 years ago to the Ozarks is ...YOUR GREENHOUSE IS NEVER BIG ENOUGH!!!! My first was 12 x 20 x 10. Not big enough. My second , 12 x 25 x 10. It's still not big enough!!! I have a large collection. My smallest are seedlings. My largest is 8ft! A Euphorbia abyssinica. I wish I had a larger one about twice as large!!! But then again, it would just fill quickly!!! Hahaha! Never large enough! The work made by David in that greenhouse was amaizing. This last year I was thinking about building my own backyard greenhouse and I really need information about how to prepare it, how to acondition it also sowing seeds, etc. This video is really helpfull but I don't know if you have more info about greenhouse building.

I can always ask around. I know a lot of folks use prefab kits from like Home Depot. But I know a couple buddies who’ve built real nice ones

LED's put out little heat, but you can ask manufacturer-

Thank you for the reply! They seem like an amazing grow light especially for that price. I checked on their site to see if they had any long horizontal bar style LEDs but unfortunately they don’t. I grow my collection indoors on aluminum racks so I needed a light that is longer. I ended up purchasing a chilled tech X1 led. 41 inches long bar style with PowerBox and dial. It came out to $247. I have been extremely impressed to say the least! Also American made!
What’s the legality of keeping lophs in the states or did this guy have legal breed and which is legal?
