  • A school in New Mexico says it will be reviewing its graduation ceremony attire policy to include more cultural elements.
    This comes after a recent incident involving an Indigenous student whose beaded grad cap was taken away by two school staff members.

      @@worldclassact1389 At the end, it stated that she was Standing Rock Sioux, not Navajo. Their also doesn't always have to be a story behind a story. She's just proud of who she is, that's the way I see it.

    CAPS are NOT school property and THEIR WERE MANY OTHER DECORATED CAPS that WERE NOT changed for a plain one. EXPLAIN THAT!

      Obviously She was singled out! By them taking her cap was totally Inappropriate, I'm sure she and her family felt so disrespected because she was trying to display a small bit of her heritage. Caps & gowns are purchased by the student or parents.

      @@user-tt7lq3md7fI and every member of my family were always asked to purchase cap/gowns for HS, undergraduate and graduate school. I don’t think renting was offered as an option. While renting may be an option some places, purchasing cheap nylon robes were always SOP for me and family

      No it’s all the students and all the other students were following the rules, I see no other caps decorated in the video, she isn’t special, if she wanted to decorate her cap and wear it then she can memorialize it in a grad photo. But rules are rules.

There's a dress code. Dress codes are enforced for a reason. It's not about expressing your individual identity at graduation ffs. She knew the dress code just like everyone else.     2014 they told me I wouldn’t receive my diploma if I walked across the stage with an eagle feather attached to my cap. That night 20+ indigenous students wore red tail hawk and eagle feathers. I’m saddened that this is still happening to our indigenous youth, whom have accomplished much!

    Eagle feathers are not only spiritually and culturally symbolic, they come from birds that are federally protected and as such the feathers have to be gathered through ethical means and are have a high monetary value. It says a lot that the cap was intentionally damaged but that the eagle feather was taken.

    Don't let strangers touch your eagle feathers! Wear it proudly and occupy your space, even if it means standing in your space quietly. Western Institutions still telling Indians how to conduct ourselves. Also the staff probably didn't have any legal rights to hold eagle feathers in the first place.

    Once you buy the caps and gowns, it's yours to decorate. It becomes your personal property and the school has no authority to take it, regardless of their ludicrous policies.
    Farmington, New Mexico has always been known to be a racist town dating back to 1950s. It hasn't changed, even though there are Navajo, Apache and Ute reservation bordering the town.

      She did a beautiful job with the beads. I guess if they don't stop decor on caps it could get really crazy. Maybe the person that replaced her cap had no control on where it turned up. Too sad.

    This is so sad and disrespectful . I do embroidery and it must have taken ages to bead that cap and add the plume. To damage it and put it in the rubbish heap like that...spits on all the love her family has for her, let alone the awful cultural discrimination. On a basic human level how could you do that to someone? It's supposed to be one of the best days of her life and they ruined it for her.

    As a school employee, if I was told to have a student's graduation hat that they decorate it removed and give them a plain one. I would have said no, she has a right to be happy for her accomplishments and if she wants to express her culture at the same time so be it. I would had told my boss I'm not taking her hat.

    Ummm, students worked hard to get throughout school, and I'm sure the cap and gown was NOT paid by the school 🤨she has freedom of speech, and let me tell ya . I sure as hell would not take it off. I wish I was beside her to encourage her not to take the cap off and stand up for what she represents on her own two feet. Damaging ones property is a crime and should be applied to this.

      It was exchanged. The girl (and any others) could have decorated it after the ceremony for a keepsake. All the students not following the rules should of had their certificates held.

The students knew they wanted to alter the attire could have asked for permission under religious exemption and had it approved beforehand that would have avoided her being called out during the ceremony. Doesn't seem like she learned very much from a place of education if she still didn't understand the importance of the rules for everyone. You are a red flag in education & part of the downfall. Obviously.

It was apparently to hard for her to be in the proper dress code , that is in the student handbook and reprehensible offense. If she bought two hats, decorated one & kept it with her family she could have avoided herself the embarrassment of being out of line.

      @@neolamotter8472 they broke the rules. It doesn't matter who they are what they did wasn't allowed. She could have bought a second cap & remained within dress code. She also could have asked for permission for the altered cap ahead of the event which she failed to do. She didn't have to attend the ceremony if she didn't want to follow the rules set. Shows she didn't learn much while she was at the institution. This is really a non story and misleading headline. She was only called out for stepping out of line and now causing drama.

The fact that they did not give it back to her and stole the Eagle feather wish is worth a lot of money says a lot. Also, Indigenous ppl have exemptions. She should look into her rights being violated.

      The teacher who took it wasn’t even white. Plus white people get their caps taken away for things like putting initials or decorations on their cap too… Though usually in that case the school input a rule of no decorations on caps… But honestly anyone of any color can and have gotten their caps taken away… I don’t think it is right but to make this about race is just silly.

    WHAT!?!? At my school it was literally tradition and entirely encouraged to decorate your cap. It was a competition almost to see who's could be craziest. The olnly thing we weren't allowed to do is wear shashes or cords that looked like the special awards ones. Why did they single her out and destroy her property? I smell a lawsuit.

    This young lady earned her diploma and her special day, and had it ruined over her cap reflecting her heritage? Why? Only a cold hearted individual would think this cap would somehow ruin graduation and society. If you have a problem with your students harmlessly reflecting their individuality and pride in who they are, then find another job. I just graduated with a naval lieutenant as we both earned our doctorates. I wore my school robe and he wore his naval uniform, and the world did not end and there was no chaos and outbreak of hostilities. You owe that young lady an apology.

Like taking it is one thing, but damaging it and trying to hide it just screams underlying hate or something ngl. That lady could have just held onto it or something.     Graduation has become a sick joke, with almost every student looking to don some ethnic, native, gender, sexual orientation, whatever alterations to academic regalia. Gone are the days when graduation was a serious event----and everyone was dressed in a gown and mortar board----with no embellishments. This way, everyone is equal----and the circus that is graduation today could be avoided.

    I kind of understand both sides; this is a symbolic occasion to represents singularity, and to be unified as equals along with you fellow students and peers as a class. One-person should not stand out amongst others. They're all there for the same reason of this massive accomplishment. The ideology this ceremony has, is similar to graduation from military training/academy. That would NOT FLY AT ALL in those circumstances. HOWEVER, I do think it would be nice to have some leeway or flexible freedom to do SOME customization of your outfit if you desire. As long as it is tasteful and not too extreme. This definitely needs to be looked into on this rearguard.

    I just attended a University graduation. A lawyer had hers decorated with the scales of justice. I thought it was corny but it was her day and how she chose to celebrate it!
    This same ceremony the president of the university encouraged hooting and hollering for your graduate while they walked and had their picture taken . He said the louder tbe better! And of course, to immediate stop after they had their picture taken so the next graduate could have their moment.
