- When replacing a power window motor on a newer cable style regulator you should NOT let the cable wheel get out of the transmission housing. We are all human though so this video shows you what to do if you make this mistake. This video is universal and applies to any make, model or year with a cable style window regulator and power window motor.

Watching this after just spending six hours replacing a broken cable on my 2008 VW Fox with a repair cable kit. Tricky, fiddly job doing these. The video is very helpful for guys like me. I could not justify paying a garage hundreds of pounds doing the repair who would want to replace the whole complete unit.
1a auto really fills the gap for videos that aren't made by other professional youtuber. Thank you!
Thank you so much for taking the time that you do to help as many people as you do by posting these videos! I've been telling everyone about you guys!... I am a female and my daughter & I were able to save a lot of money by watching your videos and doing work on my Tahoe ourselves. This video saved my butt after I accidentally let go of the wheel while removing the window motor. We were so proud of ourselves after we then watched this video and managed to fix "my" mistake! Thanks again 1aauto!!
This is exactly what I was looking for! I was replacing regulator only not entire assembly so I needed to see hoe to rewind cable on wheel. Very very helpful!. You guys are awesome!
1AAuto! Thank you, thank you. 11 years later this saved me time and money today. I missed the part in the other video where you said, “don’t let the cable come out of the spool”. I didn’t recognize the cam on the upper right. Lifesaver x100 Or I would have had to buy a whole new regulator.
just finished changing out the regulator. Thank you so much for the video.
Removing the door panel is going to be your best bet at this point. It could be any one of those issues that you mentioned and without actually seeing what is moving or not moving for that matter, will help you out to diagnose the issue.
This is very nice information to know. thanks for taking the time to do step by step. Straight to the point and helpful👍
Attempting this on an unwound power regulator cable on an 04 f150. I watched the video on removing the door panel and it couldn't have gone smoother thanks to you guys 😁 The cable itself looks good if a bit dry and the motor sounds good so fingers crossed I can get it working again. Something apparently got knocked loose or off track when I was checking fuses in the cab. I finished up and closed the door like it was my own truck. Few hours later the window was halfway down. Didn't even have a battery hooked up to it for a week while we were doing maintenance under the truck.

Thanks so much needed this
Great video that explains how power windows work inside the door. On my 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan, I hear a relay click sound inside the door but there is no glass movement when I operate the window switch for either up or down. Does this mean I have a bad motor, regulator, or something is jammed? Thanks.
Very helpful..thanks!! Yea should of watched this before I made a mess of my old regulator ...Yes-But next time I try this technique to save it..😊
Think I'ma try this. Thank you
I’d rather do thirty brake jobs the one regulator repair.
Amen
😂
For something simple, it never ends. Always seems like there's one more "gotcha".
cool i plan on tearing my out this week think the clips just broke but im sure ill have to buy a new one thanx for the video where the best place to buy these
That was very helpful good looking out
Dude ! I watched your video AFTER I screwed it up ! Nevertheless you did an amazing job !!!!!
The title alone perked me up no end...the rest..absolutely marvelous. My only complaint..should have used an EVEN BIGGER screwdriver to pry the thing apart lol!
passenger door window shattered
I was gonna ask if he needed a bigger screw driver. lol I think he is using a MAC screw driver and I actually have the whole set with two or three that are bigger. But, we have all done the very same thing. lol
@HydrOLoW If you have struggled for "way too long" then I suggest just getting a new one. I have not had a tiburon regulator apart so I can't give you any tips, sorry,
@ohhmyygodd For a 98 I would replace both. And I am not just saying that to get a bigger sale. At that age either one of the parts can have wear that causes problems. You could replace the motor but if the joints on the regulator are worn 2 months down the line either the reg fails or puts a lot of stress on the motor and overheats it. And vice-versa.
@nsotelo77 Without seeing it I couldn't say for sure, but if you're having problems with that window then pretty likely that could be causing or aggravating it.
Father of 5 money saver
4 hours later. cuts on my hand. sore fingers.
The best thing was 2 vice grips around the compressed springs when they are inside the housing. then turning the center wheel with needle nose pliers and pulling the last couple of centimeters with the fingers.
My assembly is not as big. The one cable goes aroud 2 plastic round edges.
This video help me a lot still. to learn initially how it goes.
Thanks for the video.

@csidaznigga 'is it possible to make it TOO tight?' Not really, to make it too tight you'd have to wrap it around an extra time which would make it just about impossible to string on to the rest of the regulator.
Usefull, clever and clear.
Thanks for watching
Will try this out tomorrow On A4 Audi bought the cheap kit that you have to wind the new cables in. Fiddled for two hours without success, will get an earlier start, next day. hope this new info helps.
Very helpful, thank you

Hi i have a 2005 saab 9-3 my rear driver side window cable is off the wheel is there a way to wind it while its still attached? or will i have to remove it and so what you did in this video...or just replace it? thanks
Pretty cool clip.

+Maik Elétrica Automotiva You're welcome! 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
Thanks you so much
@1aauto Thanks, that's probably the best idea :).
Yea, I found out the joy of exploding cables a few days ago - might have been a good idea to watch a video first.
I got it wound back in, but there was a clip inside the door that was obviously supposed to go into the mechanism, but I couldn't get to it. SO I shut the window - with an awful grinding noise - then just left it until I can do something else with it.
:D
Painful learning lessons :)
Would this, concept work if I noticed the cables are not tight (still inside door).. Take it out and respool?
now I see why they sell motor and regulator as a set.
Nice vid
do you have a video on the wj jeep front door regulator?
Thanks!

It looks like you can change just the motor if it's bad. We carry new window motors for your 2000 Chrysler Town & Country on our website 1aauto.com 888-844-3393 We currently do not have an auto repair video the shows you how to make this repair.
Great video! Would be helpful to also show how the cable ends ("cable nuts') insert into the the 'drive pulley'. They may come out in the process.
I just replaced both of my front window regulators. Easily the most difficult part of the job was getting the door panels back on the doors. It took me 2 days to get one back on. Then I found the door speaker was not working, so I had to take it off again. After installing a new speaker connector and re-installing the door panel, I found the window would only go up and down very slowly. So off the door panel came again. Took me a week altogether to do both doors. The windows still don't go up and down as fast as I would like.
Before I started the process,I marked my long cable with a sharpie so I would always know which cable was the long one. What can I do if I accidentally pulled the long cable longer or the short cable longer?
my regulator cable broke at the motor so thanks for the tip
Time to attempt mine again, after a year's worth of swearing
The back window reel popped while I had the panel out of an 03 mazda. I calm myself down by understanding that her and I are both breaking down and falling to pieces.😂
I got my regulator out and it looks like one of the cables sheaths is all rusted. That'd be a problem wouldn't it? I mean it would keep the cable from passing through and allowing the system to raise the window up and down correct?
i didn't know this video exist i figured this out by myself but it took 3 hours haha i did the same thing good to know somebody else wont make the same mistake i did.
You may be able to as long as it fits correctly.
Can you use any larger screw driver?
im having problems putting my window 2009 nissan rogue regulator on. left is going down right is going up
Great video! I have a 2004 Mazda RX-8. I was replacing the door lock actuator and removed the window regulator spool for access and the cables unwound. My regulator assembly only has two pulleys instead of the four pulley system in your video and neither of the pulleys appears to have a tensioner so I haven't been able to get enough slack to install the spindle in the housing with the cable wound. I'd appreciate any suggestions thx!
I'm only replacing the window motor on my 4th gen 2001 Camaro. will this be an issue? I seen many videos but this was never mentioned. please answer, my window won't roll up or down anymore and I want this fixed asap without having to worry about anything else.
I actually did it. no problems except breaking a few drill bits. first time using power tools
No problem at all. We sell new replacement window regulators on our website 1aauto.com With FREE SHIPPING in the lower 48 states.
Wished I would've watched this video hours ago!!
I've had to replace my regulator a couple of times already on my 03' Tiburon. Now this time the window would go down but not up, power appeared to be constant so I assumed it must be the pulley system. I opened up the regulator housing the spindle and bang everything came out just like in your video. Do you know if there is a trick to get that one back together. I struggled for way too long and am almost at the point of just buying a new one. Thanks in advance.
I've seen a few videos of people drilling bolts ect.. spending way to much time on these trying to fix one or the other. I just bought the entire assembly at autozone for $75.00. So worth it!
Exactly what is needed I thought impossible.

The back window on my 99 Jetta Wolfsberg went down and wouldn't come back up. I managed to grab a hold of it and push/pull it back to the closed position, it'll stay shut, but now whenever I go over a bump it opens about an inch. What's wrong with it and how do I fix it? pls respond

How do i take off the door panel? Any special tools needed? Is it difficult?
Captain Tenacious You can use a putty knife or a door panel removal tool to get the door panel pins out. We carry a universal door panel removal tool on our website.
