Hearing a keyboardist prepare for a gig, specially a seasoned one such as Jack, is always fascinating. We guitarist love to feel like rock stars, but the keyboards are usually what brings that extra oomph that get bands to the next level of awesomeness
Toughest job in a band is keyboards and also the most underrated. Just the homework alone of getting those sounds and the rig setup to pull it off. Nice work Jack.
Hi Jack. Was at the Frome gig. Told you on the night I was impressed. Loved your playing and loved your attituttude to making music... Now this - more icing on the cake - great to watch. All the best.
Love it! As a keyboardist, I always have to remind myself that it’s more about the notes I don’t play. Thank you for the insights into the inner working mechanics of the mind of Jack. Killer work and a phenomenal musician! Keep it up 👍
Just goes to show the hours of (unpaid) work that goes into preparing for just 2 nights work. Step1 identify all the different keyboard sounds. Step 2 create said sounds by either programming or sampling. Step 3 practice / practice / practice.
Very helpful Jack! Joining a two guitar band with a first gig August 26th - learning a 40 song set list. Like the suggestion that sometimes the keys just need to lay out, stop trying to match a record exactly (compromises), focus on the songs that starts with keys, etc.
Thanks Jack for confirming the comprising details of being the unsung hero of playing out live gigs , that nobody usually sees and hears. Cheer’s & Beers 🍻 mate. Kujo/ Tennessee….👍😎 Great Videos..
This was fantastic Jack. Great to see a gigging musician honestly discussing roles, tricks and hints to get through a set. That pedal show board run downs were good, but this was excellent. Your keyboard/synth sounds were incredible. Best of all I think the quote was “piano sounds like ball bags on big speakers”…..😂
One of my favourite videos that you've done. Would love to see you break down how you build patches from listening to the records step by step - deciding on and finding the right sounds.
I have a similar issue with playing live (guitar). I spend lots of time sorting out tones for the twiddly fillers and always come off the gig thinking well that was OK but it could have been better. However the reaction from the punters is always positive so I guess the message is whilst we strive for our version of perfection we're there to provide entertainment to those who don't care about the how much thingamy is on the twiddly desending widdly-diddlys. Great vid. Cheers
Thanks Jack. Great stuff to know! Keyboards cover a lot of colours in the sound palette! I’m happy to hear that you hate keyboard brass. Btw, no one knows how long it takes to tune a 12 string.🤣❤️ 41:33 brings in tears 🤣 More vocals please!
Would you consider making a video where you are live demonstrating how you even out the levels of your different patches/programs with the mixer level meter, and maybe talk about patch level in general (tips/tricks, etc.) And thanks again for, an as always, a brilliant video, I learned a lot!!
Listened to some of their live show and Jack really is the star of it all. All the other guys are good, but Jack is above and beyond. Pretty awesome! ...and I'm a guitarist.

Jack, you're speaking my language mate, but I was pretty surprised, curious, and a little bit relieved (!) by your comment at 41.25 - "even posh keyboards' pianos, sound ballbags through big speakers..." 🤣 Love it! I've suspected this for years, and tried most of the brands! So it's frikkin' refreshing to hear someone with access to so many different keyboards, say it like it is! 😅But I'd LOVE to know, what your go-to piano sound is, if it simply HAS to be naked piano at a big gig !? Cheers mate. 🤜🤛
Brilliant Jack. Lovely to see the real process (and fear and vulnerability!) about playing challenging tracks with only two hands, and the compromises made.
Such a great video. Looking at levels is a great tip for getting all of your patches at the same volume, because Jack is right - our ears do deceive us.
Awesome video! Love the music, the insights into arranging, and a how to with these keyboards. I just started playing gigs and working with 2 keyboards! I'm excited to get a volume pedal to help the expression. Thank you for sharing your wisdom! 🎉❤
What an absolute masterclass. Well batted for sharing so much in the trenches knowledge, Jack - thank you. Lovely to hear the less is more ethos in action to such great effect. Wonderful episode - please keep them coming team. Thanks all. X
Loved this!! More of this sort of stuff please, absolutely. The real world example of preparing for a gig, sound choice, gear choice etc, is so envaluable. Thank you Jack!
That was brilliant Jack. A real insight in to setting up sounds etc. Love how lazy you are! 🤣🤣 Rosanna is sooooo complected but you pulled it off. If only I could to get another synth. I loved playing.
In few years of learning music on YT I have never stumbled upon a more useful / knowledge packed video. I would pay decent money for it and here it is free. Thank you!
Jack this is killer! I can’t tell you how greatful I am for videos like this. I am super excited for more Get Your Rig Out! I do have two questions. You mentioned running mono verse stereo, could you do a video of when you might want to each? A pros and cons list would be awesome. Secondly, could you make more Hammond content? I have watched your old videos of it dozens of times and would love even more of em!
Thank you Jack! This video was so helpful and inspiring. I wish I would have heard someone of your skills say things to me earlier on in my career like “never going to win on (insert insane prog tune here)” or “compromise” when I was stressing out over really keyboard heavy tunes. So true and once you have realistic goals, it’s more fun and efficient to get on with the job. Couldn’t agree more about your take on keyboard horns. Please keep videos like these coming.
Such a brilliant video. The approach. The prep. The presentation. Such a cool share. Having been a bass player for years delving into keys... this was uber cool.
Jack…you are so brilliant! Enjoyed it en it’s all so familiar. Only if you’re a keyboard player you’ll understand the tons of workshop/time we’ll have to pit it. And if you’re also make the backing tracks the amount of effort will grow. But it’s so awesom if you nail that sound. Thnx man! 🤟🏼👌🏼
Great video! As a keyboardist, I can identify with pretty much everything you're doing, Nice one. BTW, kudos on getting to work with Andy Timmons - I discovered him several years ago and love his stuff... I see Groove or Die was in the setlist - awesome track!
Mate. This was brilliant. I'm a guitarist who has started playing a fair bit of keys and that was just incredible helpful to hear your thoughts around planning what to play. Fantastic stuff.
This is a great video. As a general Andertons fan (guitar and piano) I am also playing Nord Stage 3 Compact and 88. So for me it was super interesting to see how you get to the sounds from the songs. Especially Rosanna was very interesting, so I would be happy if you could show Rosanna on a Stage tutorial :D
Spot on - I use an expression peddle bringing in more sounds to add texture. Also ended up going down the MainStage way many years ago as I do many covers bands and for samples, splits and song lists - It’s just so much faster than using the Nord …thanks though nice watch …. Like the Nord pan tip ….
It’s always interesting that there is no standard Keyboard rig. They are all so different, as keyboards from different manufacturers are behaving so different!
Nice one Jack , best advice is not to play when you’re not needed , sadly so many musical Tourette sufferers out there who must chime in just coz they can or they’re bored etc ( looking at you sax players 🤣 ) . More of this type of thing please 😊👍
Wow! This video was a like a masterclass! Thanks! Lots of useful tips especially if I need to play Rosanna (Yikes!) Thanks! Want to buy a synth to start playing leads. Guess you would recommend a Nord. Thanks!
As a primary guitarist that also plays some keys I would pay BIG bucks to get somebody to show me this kind of stuff in person. Sadly they're impossible to find where I live.
That was excellent Jack. Wish more professionals would do shows on preparing for a real gig.
Those little things show that you're professional... "there's no piano on it... so I just stayed out". Marvellous Mr Duxbury... bloody marvellous!
Jack smashing it as always, but lets also raise a cheer for The Falcon, whose editing add that little bit extra to these videos...
As an amateur musician, this is one of the best and more useful videos I have seen. Please keep this coming! Thanks!
Hearing a keyboardist prepare for a gig, specially a seasoned one such as Jack, is always fascinating. We guitarist love to feel like rock stars, but the keyboards are usually what brings that extra oomph that get bands to the next level of awesomeness
Amazing, Jack. 10/10
Toughest job in a band is keyboards and also the most underrated. Just the homework alone of getting those sounds and the rig setup to pull it off. Nice work Jack.
Thank you so much for a peek behind the curtain!
Hi Jack. Was at the Frome gig. Told you on the night I was impressed. Loved your playing and loved your attituttude to making music... Now this - more icing on the cake - great to watch. All the best.
Didn't want this video to end...such a great talent and great teacher !!!
Love it! As a keyboardist, I always have to remind myself that it’s more about the notes I don’t play. Thank you for the insights into the inner working mechanics of the mind of Jack. Killer work and a phenomenal musician! Keep it up 👍
I love it when someone tells you what they are thinking. It’s like a secret way or short cut. Great chops
This is a proper live keyboard musician masterclass
Rosanna ... wow, now that's impressive stuff Jack, you don't really notice the compromises ... please bring the Andertons House Band to Kent!
Absolute gold! The years of wisdom packed into this is amazing
Precious!
Blinkin’ fab Duxers. Despite the fact it highlights just how crap I still am - gimme more.
Just goes to show the hours of (unpaid) work that goes into preparing for just 2 nights work. Step1 identify all the different keyboard sounds. Step 2 create said sounds by either programming or sampling. Step 3 practice / practice / practice.
2x thumbs up Jack!
Wow. Jack is a gig rig hero
Couldn’t play a keyboard if my life depended on it, can barely play guitar.
This was a fantastic video, mate.
Jack! You Wildman! You´re gold! Cheers from Finland!
Very helpful Jack! Joining a two guitar band with a first gig August 26th - learning a 40 song set list. Like the suggestion that sometimes the keys just need to lay out, stop trying to match a record exactly (compromises), focus on the songs that starts with keys, etc.
Absolutely unbelievable tekkers
This opened my ears to some music I haven't heard before. Thanks!
Jack, as always so knowledgeable and …hooooot!
Thanks Jack for confirming the comprising details of being the unsung hero of playing out live gigs , that nobody usually sees and hears. Cheer’s & Beers 🍻 mate. Kujo/ Tennessee….👍😎 Great Videos..
That zoom cut during Owner of a Lonely Heart made me spit out my lunch 😂
Same!
Superb video Jack.
This was fantastic Jack.

That pedal show board run downs were good, but this was excellent.
Your keyboard/synth sounds were incredible.
Best of all I think the quote was “piano sounds like ball bags on big speakers”…..😂
As a horn player I approve of the hire the real horns quote 😂 this was really interesting to hear your process!
Aaah epic. Thank you so much for your time after the gig Jack. Very much appreciated
Absolutely better then the first episode. I like how you go through a set list preparation in detail.
A 'Jack' master class.... well played mate!
One of my favourite videos that you've done. Would love to see you break down how you build patches from listening to the records step by step - deciding on and finding the right sounds.
This is BRILLIANT. Never seen anything so explanatory. Thanks so much.
45:29 The power of the Lord. Thank you!

Great video, man. Thanks!
Hey Jack as a guitarist (and That Pedal show fan) who dabbles with keyboards I found this really useful and interesting
Would you consider making a video where you are live demonstrating how you even out the levels of your different patches/programs with the mixer level meter, and maybe talk about patch level in general (tips/tricks, etc.) And thanks again for, an as always, a brilliant video, I learned a lot!!
Black Night was the first riff I learned on guitar. Love it!
Listened to some of their live show and Jack really is the star of it all. All the other guys are good, but Jack is above and beyond. Pretty awesome! ...and I'm a guitarist.
More please. Love seeing how other keyboard players have there rigs set-up.
Great video Jack.
aww Jack, that was brilliant, great idea can't wait to hear the next one's
It’d be great to see a tutorial video on how you midi the two Nords together to change through the set list/ patches.
I agree, I have the exactly same two keywords but I am not using the MIDI potential. It would be very interesting to learn about these settings!

Excellent video! Great demo and very enjoyable to watch
I feel your pain on Rosanna, definitely a busyyy song!!
