- If you wear a watch regularly, it will get dirty. (And if you wear your watch in salt water, you should rinse it right away afterward.) If you purchase a watch secondhand, it may also require a good cleaning before you'll want to wear it. If you're totally comfortable giving your watch a bath, here's what to do.
What You'll Need:
-Microfiber cloth
-Spring bar tool
-Sink or container of water
-Very mild liquid soap
-Hand towel
-Watchmaker Cleaning Sticks
-Soft brush/toothbrush (optional)
How to Clean a Watch:
-Remove leather and textile straps
-Get in the nooks with cleaning sticks
-Check all hinges and corners in bracelet extension and clasp
-Rinse in clean, room temperature water
-Gently pat dry with soft towel or microfiber cloth
-When dry, wipe down again with microfiber cloth

Thanks. I didn't think anyone could flatten a car enthusiasts hardon with a Lexus advertisement.
rinse watch with soap water before rubbing it with any sticks or brushes, rubbing a dry dusty watch is guaranteed to scratch it. The soapy water acts as a lube so when your scrub it the dirt particles slide off the surface. These are principles i learned from detailing cars. Also use a clean soft microfiber and not a crusty dish rag lol
You think dust will scratch the steel?
@@jdp1219 a piece of sand or grit stuck in a tight place absolutely will. Alex is correct in his assessment to use soapy water to add lubrication and reduce the risk of marring or scratching. No need to try and "gotcha" this man for an excellent suggestion.
What’s the best soap to use for watches? Will anything work? Dial or meyers?
Would you recommend a certain brand for the cleaning sticks ?
So I'm guessing the Carburettor cleaner and wire brush I've been using isn't a good idea. 😉
Sometimes I see small "rusty" parts in used watches when I look carefully at some photos, especially in the less visible parts. What does that depend on? Air drying can be a cause or is just dirt that looks like rust?
Definitely not for watch itself, but have you ever used a sonic jewelry device to clean metal bands?
Hi, I removed the bezel to clean the gunk under it, .I washed it with soap and water but got me thinking that water may be get in the little bezel ratchet holes in the case. Or Is it safe?
Its safe... Ive cleaned my watches with the bezel off. Just make sure the crown is completely shut. Thats all you need to worry about. An the back case. Those two areas are where your water resistance comes from. Not the bezel.
What if there's dirt under the stones?

... Watchmaker cleaning sticks??? Those are just lint-free swabs in various sizes.
