we had these suppliers when the program started. We ended up having to cut our orders by 2/3 because children just didnt eat them. Undercooked food, over cooked food, stale rolls and bread. We would provide feedback and nothing changed. our contract finally ended and we chnaged suppliers, our waste has dropped 80% since changing. I can also say that our other local schools have dumped them as a supplier.

So, instead of putting tax dollars into local/small businesses (the people National and ACT apperantly fight for.) They will pour it into big businesses (some of which are foreign-owned) so our tax dollars can be siphoned out of the country... Brilliant.
I get you need a certain scale to keep costs. But this seems to be the extreme end of that at the cost of local business and quality. The fact they can't even add frozen veggies to these meals baffles me.

Last thing-A principal on RNZ was highlighting how much more came out of the current model at their school. Kids grew many of the veges and I think helped prepare them occasionally too, (many, many schools do that now). They also had a good crew of people who cared preparing the meals and catered to kids with allergies and special dietary requirements. The social cost will outweigh his measley savings. Not to mention the international corporation getting it's beak wet. He must be really thick or think everyone else is, right?

  • @gregs3845

For cost comparison, perhaps look at the most comprehensive and long running govt school lunch programme in the world: the USA. It feeds about 30 million kids a day all the way through high school. Cost per student in 2023 was USD ~$3.75 ($17.2 billion in total). That's ~$6.20 in our moneys, let's call it $6 to be generous to the NZ govt. General food costs in the USA are similar or lower to NZ. $3/meal (half the US cost) in NZ seems on the low side. Just as an eyeball comparison.
If you want a comparison from a pure weight perspective, a Big Mac burger is 220g. There are plenty of 5-7year old kids who would struggle to eat a whole Big Mac, but some would definitely be scratching around for something else. So a 240g meal for the average young'un sounds pretty good from a quantity perspective. I gotta say though, when McDs first came out in NZ I was still in primary school and a Big Mac, small fries (80g) and small drink didn't quite leave me satisfied.
I'd say nutritionally a Big Mac ain't that bad, it's got fresh lettuce and onions in it, pickles, and pure beef patties, and the cheese is OK. The bun has way too much sugar in it, but overall it's better than a packet of twisties. It's fast food, but not quite junk status.
I think I could make a 240g butter chicken meal for $3 from supermarket prices, so long as I get the chicken on special, esp looking at the proportion of rice vs sauce vs the actual expensive component: chicken.
Quality costs money, and I'm not really sure $3 is quite enough. Probably doesn't need to be $8, but I think $5 would be reasonable.
