Your rewritten story made me smile a lot. It does feel like a Sonic story, similar to Rush which is fantastic. I absolutely loved when Sonic said "I think we won't have to worry about that" to Cream, it's exactly what Sonic would say!
I hope the update later this month adds some much needed complexity. They’re adding 16 new moves that you purchase with the blue coins. They’ll probably be applied like the skills in Generations so I hope they can add some more tech to engage with.
Love how a story you came up with the disparate plot concepts of Sonic Dream Team in just an hour was able to bring a little tear to my eye. Also, not sure if this was an intentional link, but love how the characters getting to meet up with Ariem in their dreams feels kind of similar to Ohshima's thoughts on players being able to meet Nights in their dreams. Adds a bit extra to the more genuine Sonic feel of your concept.

Pariah's rewrite made me understand what I don't like in Ian Flynn's writing and why Pariah says Ian's writes like the MCU. In the last 15 or so years there has been a rise of what ha sbeen recently dubbed as the "explaining movie". This kind of writing rose to prominence with the first Avengers movie, and has been ruining all sorts of western works. The explaining movie explains everything, and characters often acts like they are aware they are fictional characters in a movie. There's also an obsession with self referential humor and the IP's canon. Those things are used to instigate theories so fans can make content on social media to drive conversation about the movie. Ian's writing is a lot like this. Because he is a fan, he writes for other fans. He writes what will generate buzz on Twitter. The inclusion of the Giant Enemy C rab meme is there for people to point on social media.
The ending bit of Ariem being able to manifest in the Dream World to meet all of her friends once again is such a good touch and very, very Sonic. NiGHTS crossover when?
That story frustration reminds me of when I heard the "can't have Sonic be broken" explanation for Forces' one-dimensional portrayal of Sonic (among many other big failings), and I _immediately_ realized they could've leaned into that harder. Of course Eggman would try to torture Sonic in that position, and if he were to just... _refuse to break,_ it would frustrate the Doc further and highlight Sonic's strength of character... as well as being slightly humorous, and perhaps adding in some needed urgency by saying Eggman "giving up on breaking Sonic's will, so he'll just break Sonic" or something along those lines.
Instead of making the glide feel really bad to use, I'd rather they just put a meter on it like they do with flight if they really wanted to balance it in 3D.
what makes your rewrite really stand out even though it's pretty simple yet effective is that with that kind of story structure arc, it can allow for layers of interpretation coming from the themes presented which makes thinking about the characters, their motives, what it brings to the player, and what it says about the nature and importance of friendship really fun and amazing to think about Based on Cream's desire for her friendship with Ariem to be kept in check distance wise(both physically and mentally), and trying to think of what's best for her, Cream, and the friends she's met of the Sonic cast. It was the moments and time she spent that she valued which made her decide on her own as an person(not through some algorithm that she felt had to be bound and defined by) that she believed to be the best for her, that spending time with friends creates a sense of belonging and purposefulness and can bring a breath of fresh air into your life that has never been accomplished compared to mostly being alone even when creating that tolerance I prolly have more to add and say in terms of my own interpretation of how I see your rewrite, but for now, you COOK
The lack of personality in the characters cutscenes are precisely what I predicted was going to happen with the whole "maturing" formula. The characters now look dead inside.

I think that rewrite o’ yours might’ve officially just dashed what was left of my faith in Ian as a writer. It’s literally so simple to make even the most barebones Sonic story so much more compelling and emotional and fans like you just keep on proving he can’t do it…
If true from what I heard is that he just won't, not that he can't. Apparently he studied Shakespeare and the like, but doesn't care for themes in sonic stories that much. He cares more about if he appeases fans with fan service and references. Hence why the eng script for frontiers is up to your ears with them. It's funny to note Flynn was surprised the writer for scrapnik island was allowed to write what he did which had themes and had something to say. Maybe he's just burnt out or has grown complacent in the sense he knows he doesn't have to try hard anymore. Even if he's replaced he'll be able to get work elsewhere with the resume he has now.

Tbf, If Ian where to actually put in much effort into the story, it'd probably be meaningless action & drama for the sake of action and drama, clever set ups just for the sake of having clever set ups, conversations to make them lively when it's really just lame talk sections you see in a lot of American live action medias that some of the sonic cast may not talk or converse that way, lame devices, excuses and set ups, pointless themes, and references.xd
Personally, I really like the change they made to Knuckles' glide. The biggest problem I had with it was how busted it was, and how little the level design accomodated it in previous 3D games. Like, if your main ability is to skip massive swathes of the level for no cost, where's the challenge? Where's the satisfaction of using all of your skills and knowledge of the level, where you can skip all the challenges? At least here you have to THINK before using it, thinking where you can cover the most ground, and where it would be best to avoid flying to not fall into a pit due to the increased gravity.
The story sounds like the basic shell of Paper Mario's story (on the N64). Bowser's wishes weren't being granted, so he stole the Star Rod from the seven Star Spirits (who were only granting pure hearted peoples' wishes) to grant his own wishes with. (This all happens in the game's opening.)
Not me tearing up from that rewrite 🥹 that would have been so cute and would truly make all the characters especially Cream feel so important. I love Cream being the open hearted character to make others believe in themselves or even pull them into the story.
I'm ashamed to admit that the rewrite is more interesting than the review. It was a mindfuck when you turned Ariem into NiGHTS at the end. It just *works*! Also sad that I probably won't get to make the Never Turn Back reference on Sonic X Shadow Generarions for the end of SWAG official games era

Love the rewrite of the story so much it makes me more mad the Ian is working on the official games cause he doesn't understand JP Sonic story telling and I (in my opinion) just don't want him writing more stories for future Sonic games. If he's on Sonic X Shadow Gens writing team for the story, imma predict 2 possibilities 1: The story sucks. ( meaning it's written not like a sonic story at all in any aspect.) 2: The story is good. ( meaning it's written like an actual Sonic story.)
It will be like all his other stories: things happen, references to old stuff, and nothing meaningful is said. But it's ok because they put Emerl from Sonic Battle in the game. That makes the story 'peak".

DAWG, I just got this game 3 days ago and this came up. I haven't seen this video yet but the entire idea of a dream world sounds like such a "sonic cd" kind of premise. Even the level concepts that could come out of if has the potential to be the most "sonic" looking aesthetically. It sounds like something Naoto Oshima would make
This is the first Sonic game I passed on in years. And most Sonic games, I buy on multiple platforms (Nintendo, Xbox, PC--I gave up on PlayStation when PS5 came out). There's no way in hell I'm buying anything by Apple.

i think my favourite thing about this game that i never played in my life (as well as final horizon but i don't think it's as fun as dream team simply _looks_ ) is that all the characters can boost. i felt it was pretty arbitrary that it was an ability that so far only sonic and shadow could use, though to be fair no one else has gotten to _prove_ that they can use it _at all_ , so just making it a universal mechanic just makes much more sense
the fact that this, of ALL the SEGA games, DOESN'T have a NiGHTS reference is criminal. this was, like the One Time it would make sense! and bridge the gap between the two cannons! come on.
Given how this game was funded by Apple and made by Hardlight, I think Sega made a contract with Apple and gave them the license to only use Sonic the Hedgehog IP characters, not other Sonic Teams IPs.
Despite the game being simple, I'd still love to see this game be released on Steam or what have you just to give it a try. Also, your rewrite is really cool and it makes me so surprised that they didn't do something like that for the official story lmao.
Dream Team doesn't sound like the greatest Sonic game, but a ton of potential for a fully fleshed 3D Sonic game like this on consoles would be fantastic. That's why it's still so frustrating that this was the time SEGA was like "alright, we'll let this Sonic game that fans would love happen". A game that is exclusive to a subscription service for Apple devices...why?! As much as I enjoyed Frontiers, the idea for this game is honestly better, IMO. Maybe they could mix Frontiers and this game's ideas. Throw in a nice couple of Chao Gardens and a great story (and you know, fully finish the game) and we'd have possibly the best 3D Sonic game! Of course when I say mix them, I mean mix them up with the best aspects of those games. Also yes, your idea for the story does sound better.
Dream Team seems like a game that wasn’t finished, content wise. Since it’s a phone game, they can get away with it and add updates overtime, such as new zones. The game didn’t even have a ranking system until very recently. I haven’t played it, but I have read conversations about it and some of its updates.
You have to wait...until the deal with apple expires then they could probably port it in other consoles or PC..even I mean they did it for lost world why not this there's hope don't worry.

You've talked about almost every media this franchise spread its wings into and I feel like this show is the only missing piece of the puzzle. I'd be really interested in hearing your thoughts on it. Because with everything you've talked about on this franchise I feel like this show has a lot of what you enjoy in Sonic stories and I'd be particularly interested in hearing your thoughts on Chris' character. It's a very dear show to me. Also, your rewrite of Dream Team's managed to get a "aaaww" out of me and yet you've barely put any work into it. It's wild that Ian Flynn can't come up with stuff like this because it practically writes itself. Flynn definitely has cool ideas, but I feel like he lacks vision when it comes to the stories he writes, almost as if he thinks of stories as nothing more than just events happening one after the other and not a whole with themes and a message and event happening working on building on (and to) said themes and messages. Apparently his early Archie stuff was really good but I don't know, if he wrote back then as he writes now, was it that great ? And it's totally outrageous since Sonic Team wants us to believe that they're starting to do a good job when, nope, they improved but there're still fundamental flaws. Things have remained this way for the past few years, so anyone would be upset about, for example, how Dream Blast is being handled, considering how empty the cutscenes looked (but they're not as bad as people are saying). But again, it's just a mobile game. Light the torches on other issues in, for example, whatever they did with the Sonic characters in Frontiers. No Flynn, just because a character matures doesn't mean he has to act so empty/stereotypical 🤦♂️

@pariah695 you should do another video of the most recent DLC + Shadow later this year. The last update addressed most of the concerns you had excluding a better story. We have the new abilities feature which gives you the option to choose things like the stomp ability, super glide, and a longer flight. There are also more stages.
If I'm not mistaken, for some reason I can't understand, the backstory tells us about Eggman and his psychology. The dream layers show his facets as a "character". I don't think it will do any harm to the character, after all, he has always been an egomaniac who dreams of creating Eggmanland.
The idea of exploring Eggman's memories and personality traits through dream levels Psychonauts-style sounds AWESOME, I can already imagine stuff like exploring a school with the aesthetics of a nursery or carnival to represent how smart he felt he was compared to everyone else, or his nightmare world where nature and tech coexist peacefully and his face isn't on any of it. It's too bad that concept had to be used for a low-budget mobile game (albeit a good one) focused more on being dream-like rather than actually like dreams.
so i could be wrong but i think a leaker said that sega is gathering all the workers together somehow to put more money and work into projects, so the sequel to frontiers could be a whole different experience
There is already two Frontiers 2 leaks on 4chan, one from July, other from September. If the info they gave is to be believed, "Frontiers 2" is just Frontiers but better. Same combat, same premise. But the build they described had stylized graphics (still realistic); was one massive island (bigger than all islands from Frontiers); had the same combat system, but the movement had an overhaul. The build they tested had momentum physics, and the boost was nerfed - you had to learn how to keep the momentum to fun fast. The way they described reminded of how Spark the Electric Jester works in 3D.
The Ariem and Cream talk only serves to further annoy me that we've had two Nicole types since Archie Sonic ended and neither of them are as interesting as Nicole was.
One thing I don't fully get is the way the logo is stylized. By the way it's designed, it implies that "Sonic Dream" is a saga, and this game is called "Team" inside this saga. I think of it as a "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order / Survivor" type deal. If this is true, then, will there ever be another Sonic Dream game? What would it be like? A mobile game too? Or maybe Sonic Dream is the full console release title of this game. Anyway, I hope SEGA keep this part of the franchise on the table for a comeback. And even hopefully rewrite and animate more cutscenes!
Nah his re-write still missing a mark basically making ariem naive and idiot knows nothing about friendship but her character suppose to be a wise, experienced and kind guardian this re-write makes this experienced guardian into an idiot..which it doesn't work. There's a decent depth into it but it doesn't work because of this.
Listen, I wish you wouldn't be ranting over the Mario and Sonic Olympic games, most people love this series! You know what I think Sega Sports R&D should've done to the later olympic games, Expand them. Expend the two universes, more new playable characters, more events, guest characters from other Nintendo and Sega franchises, and DLCs. As much as I like the possible Mario and Sonic crossover, You should review the Sonic/Mega Man crossover comics, and do a video on how Mega Man also influenced Sonic the Hedgehog. I also agree with your opinion on some of Sonic's friends development, like how often you think Blaze and Cream interact with each other. I would travel back to 2003 to persuade NYAV Post studios to dub Sonic X instead of 4Kids. Ryan Drummond and the dreamcast actors would reprise their characters in Shadow the Hedgehog until Deem Bristow dies of heart attack and NYAV Post over the later games. I'd work at the Sega to help make Sonic 06 great. For Sonic Generations, make Modern and Classic Tails, Knuckles, and Amy playable after going through the Classic Era. The supporting characters would compliment on how the Classic quartet looks after being rescued. Tikal would guide the player throughout the game instead of Omachao. We should bring back Team Hooligan, Mighty the Armadillo, Ray the Flying Squirrel, Marine the Raccoon,and Honey the Cat for the modern spin-offs.

Ngl, as a fan of Ian Flynn’s Archie work, it gets a little annoying hearing people complain about what he’s made. Even if I can understand and agree with many of their problems. I guess it’s that I know Ian can make an enjoyable story, it doesn’t even need to have a theme as long as it’s good. (And no, I’m not just referring to action. I can imagine him writing a story that is more heartfelt and character driven without having to have a deeper meaning) Heck, ngl, I also have many problems with some of Ian’s stories in the Archie days with how they are handled. So I know he isn’t perfect nor his Archie run. Seriously, I really love Mina Mongoose and I still don’t entirely like the direction Ian took with her singing an anti-Nicole song. That bit, no matter if it could make it work without ruining her character, still ruined her for a lot of people. And it gets sad to look back on. Especially how poorly written it is that it makes more sense that Naugus was the one who snapped his fingers and warped the song and warped Mina and her band’s memory of it, as he amplified everyone’s emotions. But they never take that direction.
this game feels like the first time that the “step in the right direction” argument actually applies. if they removed the boost and focused on the spindash in the design then this would be the best official 3D Sonic far and away

I think that rewrite o’ yours might’ve officially just dashed what was left of my faith in Ian as a writer. It’s literally so simple to make even the most barebones Sonic story so much more compelling and emotional and fans like you just keep on proving he can’t do it…
If true from what I heard is that he just won't, not that he can't. Apparently he studied Shakespeare and the like, but doesn't care for themes in sonic stories that much. He cares more about if he appeases fans with fan service and references. Hence why the eng script for frontiers is up to your ears with them.
It's funny to note Flynn was surprised the writer for scrapnik island was allowed to write what he did which had themes and had something to say. Maybe he's just burnt out or has grown complacent in the sense he knows he doesn't have to try hard anymore. Even if he's replaced he'll be able to get work elsewhere with the resume he has now.

Personally, I really like the change they made to Knuckles' glide. The biggest problem I had with it was how busted it was, and how little the level design accomodated it in previous 3D games. Like, if your main ability is to skip massive swathes of the level for no cost, where's the challenge? Where's the satisfaction of using all of your skills and knowledge of the level, where you can skip all the challenges? At least here you have to THINK before using it, thinking where you can cover the most ground, and where it would be best to avoid flying to not fall into a pit due to the increased gravity.

The story sounds like the basic shell of Paper Mario's story (on the N64). Bowser's wishes weren't being granted, so he stole the Star Rod from the seven Star Spirits (who were only granting pure hearted peoples' wishes) to grant his own wishes with. (This all happens in the game's opening.)
Not me tearing up from that rewrite 🥹 that would have been so cute and would truly make all the characters especially Cream feel so important. I love Cream being the open hearted character to make others believe in themselves or even pull them into the story.
I'm ashamed to admit that the rewrite is more interesting than the review. It was a mindfuck when you turned Ariem into NiGHTS at the end. It just *works*!

1: The story sucks. ( meaning it's written not like a sonic story at all in any aspect.)
2: The story is good. ( meaning it's written like an actual Sonic story.)
It will be like all his other stories: things happen, references to old stuff, and nothing meaningful is said. But it's ok because they put Emerl from Sonic Battle in the game. That makes the story 'peak".

DAWG, I just got this game 3 days ago and this came up. I haven't seen this video yet but the entire idea of a dream world sounds like such a "sonic cd" kind of premise. Even the level concepts that could come out of if has the potential to be the most "sonic" looking aesthetically. It sounds like something Naoto Oshima would make

i think my favourite thing about this game that i never played in my life (as well as final horizon but i don't think it's as fun as dream team simply _looks_ ) is that all the characters can boost. i felt it was pretty arbitrary that it was an ability that so far only sonic and shadow could use, though to be fair no one else has gotten to _prove_ that they can use it _at all_ , so just making it a universal mechanic just makes much more sense
the fact that this, of ALL the SEGA games, DOESN'T have a NiGHTS reference is criminal. this was, like the One Time it would make sense! and bridge the gap between the two cannons! come on.

Given how this game was funded by Apple and made by Hardlight, I think Sega made a contract with Apple and gave them the license to only use Sonic the Hedgehog IP characters, not other Sonic Teams IPs.

Dream Team doesn't sound like the greatest Sonic game, but a ton of potential for a fully fleshed 3D Sonic game like this on consoles would be fantastic. That's why it's still so frustrating that this was the time SEGA was like "alright, we'll let this Sonic game that fans would love happen". A game that is exclusive to a subscription service for Apple devices...why?! As much as I enjoyed Frontiers, the idea for this game is honestly better, IMO. Maybe they could mix Frontiers and this game's ideas. Throw in a nice couple of Chao Gardens and a great story (and you know, fully finish the game) and we'd have possibly the best 3D Sonic game! Of course when I say mix them, I mean mix them up with the best aspects of those games. Also yes, your idea for the story does sound better.
Dream Team seems like a game that wasn’t finished, content wise. Since it’s a phone game, they can get away with it and add updates overtime, such as new zones. The game didn’t even have a ranking system until very recently.
I haven’t played it, but I have read conversations about it and some of its updates.

Also, your rewrite of Dream Team's managed to get a "aaaww" out of me and yet you've barely put any work into it. It's wild that Ian Flynn can't come up with stuff like this because it practically writes itself.
Flynn definitely has cool ideas, but I feel like he lacks vision when it comes to the stories he writes, almost as if he thinks of stories as nothing more than just events happening one after the other and not a whole with themes and a message and event happening working on building on (and to) said themes and messages.
Apparently his early Archie stuff was really good but I don't know, if he wrote back then as he writes now, was it that great ?

And it's totally outrageous since Sonic Team wants us to believe that they're starting to do a good job when, nope, they improved but there're still fundamental flaws. Things have remained this way for the past few years, so anyone would be upset about, for example, how Dream Blast is being handled, considering how empty the cutscenes looked (but they're not as bad as people are saying). But again, it's just a mobile game. Light the torches on other issues in, for example, whatever they did with the Sonic characters in Frontiers. No Flynn, just because a character matures doesn't mean he has to act so empty/stereotypical 🤦♂️

@pariah695 you should do another video of the most recent DLC + Shadow later this year. The last update addressed most of the concerns you had excluding a better story. We have the new abilities feature which gives you the option to choose things like the stomp ability, super glide, and a longer flight. There are also more stages.
If I'm not mistaken, for some reason I can't understand, the backstory tells us about Eggman and his psychology. The dream layers show his facets as a "character".
I don't think it will do any harm to the character, after all, he has always been an egomaniac who dreams of creating Eggmanland.
The idea of exploring Eggman's memories and personality traits through dream levels Psychonauts-style sounds AWESOME, I can already imagine stuff like exploring a school with the aesthetics of a nursery or carnival to represent how smart he felt he was compared to everyone else, or his nightmare world where nature and tech coexist peacefully and his face isn't on any of it. It's too bad that concept had to be used for a low-budget mobile game (albeit a good one) focused more on being dream-like rather than actually like dreams.
So who's going to tell him about the new moves that's coming to the game later this year

There is already two Frontiers 2 leaks on 4chan, one from July, other from September.
If the info they gave is to be believed, "Frontiers 2" is just Frontiers but better. Same combat, same premise. But the build they described had stylized graphics (still realistic); was one massive island (bigger than all islands from Frontiers); had the same combat system, but the movement had an overhaul. The build they tested had momentum physics, and the boost was nerfed - you had to learn how to keep the momentum to fun fast. The way they described reminded of how Spark the Electric Jester works in 3D.

The Ariem and Cream talk only serves to further annoy me that we've had two Nicole types since Archie Sonic ended and neither of them are as interesting as Nicole was.
One thing I don't fully get is the way the logo is stylized. By the way it's designed, it implies that "Sonic Dream" is a saga, and this game is called "Team" inside this saga. I think of it as a "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order / Survivor" type deal.
If this is true, then, will there ever be another Sonic Dream game? What would it be like? A mobile game too?
Or maybe Sonic Dream is the full console release title of this game.
Anyway, I hope SEGA keep this part of the franchise on the table for a comeback. And even hopefully rewrite and animate more cutscenes!

Listen, I wish you wouldn't be ranting over the Mario and Sonic Olympic games, most people love this series! You know what I think Sega Sports R&D should've done to the later olympic games, Expand them. Expend the two universes, more new playable characters, more events, guest characters from other Nintendo and Sega franchises, and DLCs. As much as I like the possible Mario and Sonic crossover, You should review the Sonic/Mega Man crossover comics, and do a video on how Mega Man also influenced Sonic the Hedgehog. I also agree with your opinion on some of Sonic's friends development, like how often you think Blaze and Cream interact with each other. I would travel back to 2003 to persuade NYAV Post studios to dub Sonic X instead of 4Kids. Ryan Drummond and the dreamcast actors would reprise their characters in Shadow the Hedgehog until Deem Bristow dies of heart attack and NYAV Post over the later games. I'd work at the Sega to help make Sonic 06 great. For Sonic Generations, make Modern and Classic Tails, Knuckles, and Amy playable after going through the Classic Era. The supporting characters would compliment on how the Classic quartet looks after being rescued. Tikal would guide the player throughout the game instead of Omachao. We should bring back Team Hooligan, Mighty the Armadillo, Ray the Flying Squirrel, Marine the Raccoon,and Honey the Cat for the modern spin-offs.

Ngl, as a fan of Ian Flynn’s Archie work, it gets a little annoying hearing people complain about what he’s made. Even if I can understand and agree with many of their problems. I guess it’s that I know Ian can make an enjoyable story, it doesn’t even need to have a theme as long as it’s good. (And no, I’m not just referring to action. I can imagine him writing a story that is more heartfelt and character driven without having to have a deeper meaning)
Heck, ngl, I also have many problems with some of Ian’s stories in the Archie days with how they are handled. So I know he isn’t perfect nor his Archie run.
Seriously, I really love Mina Mongoose and I still don’t entirely like the direction Ian took with her singing an anti-Nicole song. That bit, no matter if it could make it work without ruining her character, still ruined her for a lot of people. And it gets sad to look back on. Especially how poorly written it is that it makes more sense that Naugus was the one who snapped his fingers and warped the song and warped Mina and her band’s memory of it, as he amplified everyone’s emotions. But they never take that direction.
this game feels like the first time that the “step in the right direction” argument actually applies. if they removed the boost and focused on the spindash in the design then this would be the best official 3D Sonic far and away
