In my opinion, this is the best cover of Home from the Forest there ever was. I remember when Manzanita was released in 1979 and bought it shortly after it was released. The entire album is, in my opinion at least, Rice's best album ever. His masterful work on Home from the Forest cemented this album as one of the top 10 most listened to albums I own, even now 35 years later.
When brilliance is subtle it takes on a unique beauty. Not only does Tony play otherworldly guitar, he does it with such ease. He covers all the bases and is the most important guitar player currently alive.
makes me smile no end... lets see, great bluegrass voice, best acoustic guitar of all time, plays just slightly ahead of the beat for best way of driving a tune forward with the right intensity and power.... all done with that precision and soul he paints with.. the best there is still......
A little background on the song . Lightfoot was performing at Massey Hall in Toronto on a bitter cold winter evening when an elderly homeless man sought refuge in the lobby . He was refused and later died of exposure near by . The only personal effects he had of any 'value ' were his medals from his service during the second world war . Gord heard of this and wrote the song .
I did not know of such a background. A very sad story certainly. By reading this, it just came to my mind another song "Streets of London" by Ralph McTell, where, in one verse, he talks about something similar: Have you seen the old man Outside the seaman's mission memory fading with the medal ribbon that he wears In our winter city the rain cries a little pity for one more forgotten hero and a world that doesn't care
Personally, I love the late George Hamilton IV's version of this song and 'prefer' it over this one - but only because I heard it first! This version NAILS IT! RIP all the poor homeless sods who freeze to death every year, while we live our rich, fat-arsed lives.........
Thanks for a terrific video. My first encounter with Tony Rice was his work on Bill Keith's Rounder album. By the end of his break on the first tune, "No Expectations" it was clear that he was a rare talent.
Brilliant, Home from the Forest is one of my favorite Covers by Tony Rice ! DOn't know were you dug these videos out from, but they're a real treat. Thanks a million !
Super awesome rendition of Gordon Lightfoot's song. Tony's vocals are awesome and his pickin beyond repproach...........the other members of his band are magnificent as well includin Wyatt Rice, Jimmy Gautreau, and Mark Schatz. Thanks for postin.
Thanks for this post! Tony! Tony! Tony! What else is there to say? Good stuff wether on CD or 33LP. I still like to get the old record out and remember times gone by. Thanks again!!
I just returned from the Rogersville Bluegrass and Ray Legere and Acoustic Horizon reminded us of the days he,Wyatt Rice and Mark Schatz did a project for CBC in Halofax incl. some of Gordon's. Yeah, Gordon Lightfoot wrote some great songs ( mostly called folk on my day ) and Tony Rice did an excellent job on this one and many others.
Great version by Tony and crew of this Lightfoot tune. IMO I prefer this version over the original, mainly for the superb guitar breaks and fillins by Tony. Believe me, Tony is one of the greatest flattop pickeras around. He would make any b/g band sound awesome just with the guitar work .
+strawman8 According to the liner notes on one of Tony's albums, they did meet once. They spent some time picking and talking, and Lightfoot told him he admired his versions of his songs.

I love his version of this song so dearly and have for years. I listen to it everyday
Thank you, Tony, for all the beautiful music you have left us on records and DVDs. I will play them until I die.
Thank you Tony, there will never be another like you.
Holding back the tears of joy hearing this song. So good.
Tony was so perfect as a guitarist entertainer and singer. He mastered it all may he Rest In Peace he deserves

That Tony can surely pick, and the voice is pleasant to the ear in every song he sings.

Thanks Francis. I never knew the background story, despite listening to this song for decades.
@@danielibnz Streets of London: terrific song.
I love this version of this song. I love the story it tells.
Berkshire Mtn Bluegrass Festival. THE best BG festival I ever attended, several years running.
RIP Tony Christmas Day 2020!

This footage/show of Tony Rice is up there with the best I've found, thanks!
I just love Tony Rice!!! :D
Another brilliant rendering of a Lightfoot classic by Tony Rice. This man has talent oozing out of his talent. :)
Thanks tony. We will forever be moved by your playing and singing
RIP Legend, thank you Tony!
Love the footage of the crowds! Brings back memories of happier pre virus days at the outdoor festivals. Maybe next year!
Oh man, that was great! I am saving this link.
Cheers 🍺

I've had the pleasure of meeting tony and Wyatt along time ago in Atlanta tony let me play that d28 what a joy there is a god folks
I knew that.
+Sean Rumney According to Richard Hoover (Santa Cruz Guitar Co) Tony liked medium gauge Daquisto strings with a low action.
I think Tony has been, and is major force and influence in bluegrass/folk even with the vocal problems--his spirit is strong as ever
I love this song ❤🤍🪽🌹🪽🔥💯
This is one of the best. Real good sound recording, great tune, singing and playing. Bravo all around.
Rest In Peace Tony. Your music will ring on for eternity
I know Tony Rice music had never heard this, I love the chord changes and the poetry. Right on Gordon and delivered by the master.
The long lost night nights of JDI. It was a drunken stupor, but Tony's playing stood out., even though, ..
Glad to see you guys still play together.

Thanks, I got it on Tony's Homepage.
A great loss he could sing and play beautiful
Thanks for this post! Tony! Tony! Tony! What else is there to say? Good stuff wether on CD or 33LP. I still like to get the old record out and remember times gone by. Thanks again!!
The watching boy is totally mesmerized.
Great stuff!!! Thanks!
Caught the Unit live at the Down Home many years ago. WHat a hoot!
Pure velvety goodness.

LOVE Jimmy Gadreau's mandolin style! His break on the studio version of this is amazing...
If you're referring to the Manzanita album, Jimmy did not play on it. That was Ricky Skaggs on mandolin and tenor vocal.
RIP Tony Rice
This man is my hero.
he is the greatest
Tony does a great job on Gordie's rendition of this song. Wonder if they ever met ?
+strawman8 According to the liner notes on one of Tony's albums, they did meet once. They spent some time picking and talking, and Lightfoot told him he admired his versions of his songs.
the BEST EVER TONY IS GREAT
I didn’t even know this song, but after the first few bars immediately thought of Gordon.
Another great Lightfoot song!
Well thear you boys go the best theat is and ever will be end of story
Tony Rice doing GL songs better since forever.
Tony super..........
He sang so damned well!! But the guitar still rings.
wowzas what a choon
Tony Doing Different Lightfoot songs-sweet.
Nice!
Hope you are well Wyatt…
lightfoot and rice. both great. i also like wyatt, jimmy and mark
I prefer this version to the record. The harmonies on the record take away from listening to Tony's magical voice.
The very first time I heard Tony play in Louisville Ky I knew he would go to the top and he did.Congradulations to a real great guitar player.
Strawman, you said you just returned from Rogersville Bluegrass. Where is this at?
Pinrod
I think his voice was starting to get weak you can hear a quiver in it
I really like a lot of Gordon Lightfoot's songs
Great song based on a true story, ask Gordon Lightfoot.
R.I.P. Gordon Lightfoot
I'd love to see Ricky Skaggs on the Mandolin.
Gord`s version is best
Let's not forget the banjar originates in Africa. Brought over with the slave trade.
Gordon Lightfoot sings it best. Respectfully. Best voice.
not as good as Lightfoot.
