Now, if you were a kid growing up in the 80s like I was, you'll remember how much we all loved heading down to the local arcade with a pocket full of change, ready to take on all the latest games. But, let's face it, not all of us could afford to spend all our pocket money on those machines. That's where the ZX Spectrum came in - it brought all the excitement of the arcade right into our living rooms! So, sit back, relax, and let's take a trip down memory lane as we count down the best arcade conversions the Spectrum had to offer!

What a cracking video, superb selection here! Brings back so many memories. Christmases playing Operation Wolf and Narc. Hours on end spent with mates playing commando and hypersports. Round my cousins playing green Beret and Spy hunter. Literally had all of these fantastic games! Still got the old +2 in the loft with boxes full of games. Great gaming times 😊
there's nothing humble about the ZX Spectrum!! It was brilliant for its days, and I have the fondest memories playing it!

Spy hunter was so addictive i played it every day, 2 tapes if i remember correctly

Still one I play today
I went from a 2600 to an Amiga. From really wanting a C64, I thought the Amiga was the best!!! The Spectrum never made it to Australia and still images of Spectrum looked terrible. I have to admit some Amiga games were all graphics and no gameplay. I have only just had a crack at the Spectrum and without seeing everything moving, I didn’t realise how much I was missing out. Some of the sprites are superior to other 8 Bit machines and there is something about the colours, they just really pop on the screen. I even like the sounds as it just instantly takes you back to that time period. I am a very new fan of the Spectrum and only now giving it the credit it deserves but it is a lot of fun discovering all these genius games. Great video!!!

Just came across your channel today. Feel like I've found an old friend. As an only child with Aspergers my Soectrum 48k+ (NEVER forget the plus!! 😂) was a lifeline. My mate had an Amstrad 64 and between us we were in gaming heaven. And now the circle is complete! From playing Robocop on my Speccy (Awesome game) to now playing Robocop on my Ps5 with my lil' girl and boy. I can only imagine that gaming will be quantum computing or some other magic and lifelike VR by the time my kids have kids! I just hope ai can upload myself onto a memory stick and become part of the games. Special mention to oast favourite Speccy games are Batman Caped Crusader, Target Renegade, Laser Squad, MOTD2, Lords of Midnight, Last Ninja 2 (I had the limited edition with a plastic shuriken and Ninja mask which my mate nicked lol). I'll think of a dozen other games in a minute. Just curious, are tiu in the midlands? I grew up in Erdington, moved away when I was 14 but funny to think you may have been living not far playing the same games! Great stuff, keep it up 👍

@@ClassicReplay oh wow! I remember Blockbuster video but didn't know Sega World in it. I do remember it opening though. It was huge and so modern at the time! There was a video store up Erdington High Street that I'd get a rental from every weekend. I can't remember the name though (JR's? I may be making that up though lol). Just thought of my other favourite games on the Spectrum, Myth, After Burner, Milk Run, Horace goes skiing, Batman the Movie, Jack the Nipper,
@taglor all classics, I remember the video/games shop at the top. Erdington is a shadow of its former self now. Completely down the drain.
@@ClassicReplay It's such a shame. I heard about St Barnabas being in flames. I was christened there and my folks married there too. Haven't lived in Brum (I lived on Wood End Road) for 33 years (I'm a 76 child) but still call it home. Have been living in Ireland for 8 years now and love it. Ps I'm still distraught at not knowing where my Spectrum ended up. Probably the same place as my Millennium Falcon. I found out from my cousin last year that my mum gave the Falcon to my cousins and then years later my auntie gave it to a charity shop. I'm still going through PTSD for this 😂

Brilliant video. As with others, I missed some of these because of going to university and upgrading. Didn’t know about Turtles, it looks great. R Type is a great No. 1. Glad Double Dragon didn’t make it!

Interesting video, even though I never owned a Spectrum. Liked the tips you gave, they were a bit quick off the screen. I liked the original scores you gave.

Commando was the first game I ever completed. So many restarts, so many frustrated cries of anguish, but such a feeling a achievement after days/weeks of trying.
What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. Commando was a good character builder 😅

I bought an Amiga 1988-89, so missed out on a few. Green Beret, Ghost and Goblins probably the best for me, along with Enduro Racer, Commando and Renegade (which the 128 version crashed on mine after 1 game)
That would have been a great time to own an Amiga, the best time for games. Green Beret, ChaseHQ, Rastan, Bubble Bobble. Too many classics to mention.
Oh so many memories played alot of those games. Miss the 80s or early 90s seem so much more fun!!

I would have also had Yie ar Kung Fu and Mikie in there.
They’re both classic Imagine conversions of Konami coin ups that captured all the playability of the original arcades and were colourful.
I had a 48k Spectrum and Bionic Commando was one of the first games that made me jealous of my friends that had the 128k +2 due to the awesome music.

Lightforce was brilliant! Bounder didn’t do anything for me, preferred Trailblazer. Terra Cresta good game, Uridium I just think of that as a C64 game, best played in that system. Spellbound have to be in the mood, but good game. Karnov not very good outside the arcade. But all opinions my friend ☺️ thank you so much for watching 👀
R type is the best with great difference
Shadow Warriors maybe is one of the first games to use "cell shading" (kind of)? They used a really amazing trick to avoid the overlapping colors issue.
You learn something new everyday. Is that for the arcade version?
I think Lightforce by Gargoyle Games was the first to implement that graphical technique in 1986.

Rock on! Loved Ghouls n Ghost, Shadow Dancer was brilliant! I could never get into Shinobi on the Speccy. But here’s the problem, you could easily have another top thirty with completely different games.
I have played some of these games but not all, I will have to buy Speccy again and play them again! ;-)
Make sure you get a zx spectrum +3 as you can add a USB drive to play all games in .dsk format ;-)
@@ClassicReplay Thanks for the advice, but I'll have a hard time finding it here in Serbia. The problem is finding a normal 48K, let alone 128K in that version... ;-)

Loved this video so much! We just got our very first Spectrum 48k and the research alone has been thrilling! The arcade ports on the speccy seem to be on another level compared with the C64 and other computers at the time. I never realized how powerful the little 8bit computer really is. My daughter is far more interested in the games on it than the newer systems because the games are easier to pick up and play. Will be jotting down a bunch of these titles you showed us and give them a go. Thanks so much!

Wonderful video as always, you have to try the new version of Renegade for CPC (Renegade Reloaded) that has just been released... they have added scroll! 😮
I've already played it and defeated Mr Big 😉Fantastic achievement. Now they just need to fix Gryzor, Final Fight and Bionic Commando and it's happy days! Oh, nearly forgot, and Out Run! I don't think Street Fighter 2 will ever happen.

Ghosts 'N Goblins was tough to beat on any system, you are correct.

Nice video, and Ms Fox looking rather lovely, there :-) I love all these games - I'm particularly bonkers about Rainbow Islands! I don't think the appeal of machines like the Speccy and CPC are merely about nostalgia or "the 80s", I think the 8-bit style - with its simple, cartoony graphics and beautiful colours - is always going to appeal to young people. And it's way cool that you've got your kids playing Speccy games! :-)
The obvious dealbreaker to modern audiences is the load time and antiquated tape format. It's also a shame the Speccy didn't have a little more CPU speed. If these 2 things had been different and it had been more 'console'-like with cartridge games, then I think the machine would have aged better and lasted longer, like the NES has.
With that said, I may as well mention a project I'm working on (in case anyone finds this interesting). I'm actually developing a brand new games machine, intended as the spiritual successor to the Speccy (though nothing at all like the Spectrum Next). It's inspired by the Speccy's visual style, and will play Speccy games, but also offer a much faster, more modern experience, while retaining the simple, limited graphics, colours, and audio.
But it's not just a glorified Spectrum, my machine will also offer a lot of really exciting new features, innovations which no one has ever seen before in a games machine. So it's going to be very new and different! It's been a labour of love. I'm still years away from making any announcements, don't even have a channel or website yet. Hope I can one day get this machine released :-)
Lovely to hear from you and I agree with your thoughts around 8bit and retro. Look up retro virtual machine www.retrovirtualmachine.org if these features could be implemented into a physical console, 4mb of ram, speed increases, obviously being less about the tech inside and more about the product. I believe it would capture a niche market.

@@ClassicReplay LOL I wish I could go into specific details but can't yet as I need to protect my ideas, some of them are groundbreaking I believe. I haven't told a soul yet.
But the idea behind my machine is to have one standard 'retro' format, a format that will last forever, and be so popular that everyone will want to port all the classic games from other machines onto my machine. So it will unite all the classic machines and instead of having to deal with emulating multiple different hardwares, it will bring all those games together into a single, standard system - the best system.
Well, many will argue the PC already achieved this a while back. But if it’s affordable enough and comes with steering wheel and multiple controller support, you’d probably be onto something 😉

I’m always disappointed when the Spectrum version of Space Harrier isn’t mentioned in these lists since it was better than it had any right to be.
A monster coin-op with amazing graphics then translated onto the humble 48k Spectrum which was fast, responsive and graphically detailed. The only flies in the ointment were limited sound and legibility of the monochromatic enemies. I think part of the reason the conversion doesn’t get its dues is because once you remove the razzmatazz of the graphics and sonics of the coin-op, you’re left with a game with the depth of a puddle. Keith Burkhill, you are a programming genius.
This isn’t one of Sega’s masterpieces IMPO. It runs out of steam quite quicky. If you're talking purely from a coding perspective then yes, it's a marvel. But as a game, playability quickly wanes and the sound is awful.

With emulation these days, honestly you're are probably better off. The cost to store these things only ever increases. If you still want one after all these years, the ZX Spectrum Next is a great choice.

Chase HQ still makes me salty - the C64 version was soooooo bad, and somehow the Speccy version was great.

Was waiting for Sam fox strip poker. No dice. Spectrum had some great games but most of these conversions were better on the c64 or amstrad, just saying.
