🏨OUR HOTEL RECOMMENDATIONS IN EACH SPOT
    ⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
    11. Santiago de Compostela. Hotel Pazo de Altamira is a lovely, modern hotel within a gorgeous old Galician stone building. And it’s right opposite the fabulous market! bit.ly/2HDJwL2
    10. Jerez de la Frontera. Definitely try and stay at the famous Hotel Casa Grande - a big old mansion with a gorgeous rooftop terrace for drinks - bit.ly/30K5HXr
    9. Vera Valley. I would suggest staying in the village Valverde de la Vera and my pick is the cosy and rustic La Picota: bit.ly/2VMT7D3
    8. Cadaqués. I love Tramantua Hotel, a white-washed gem run by a husband and wife team… service is fantastic, and it’s right in the old city, plus near the beach: bit.ly/2JCPpdP
    7. Cáceres. We stayed at the budget but good Hotel Iberia Plaza Mayor with views of the square): bit.ly/2K4CuAv. If you want to stay IN the old city though, the Parador here is a 14th century palace - the full Caceres medieval dream! bit.ly/2HUT3w8
    6. Oviedo. Prices in Northern Spain are often cheaper, so you can happily get a great hotel here without spending a lot. Check out the excellent Barceló Oviedo Cervantes: bit.ly/2YPLXQA
    5. Zahara de los Atunes. Either go with Hotel Avenida Playa (simple, clean, and right off the beach - bit.ly/2W1z60u) or the slightly more chic Hotel Doña Lola - bit.ly/2VWA89q
    4. Las Alpujarras. Casa Rural la Fragua is a gorgeous little tucked away whitewashed apartment in Capileira (either stay here or in Pampaneira). This place is perfect for exploring the villages around the area. bit.ly/2QqUUgg
    3. El Rocío. I love Hotel La Malvasía with its old-world luxury, the fact it’s only a 5-minutes walk from the famous Santa María del Rocío church and they also have a terrace which is perfect for sunsets. bit.ly/2YNXkbA
    2. Mejorada del Campo.
Bus info: www.madridbuses.com/autobuses... (take the bus from Conde de Casal). Don’t spend the night there. It’s a day trip. But my favourite Madrid hotels are below (in descending price order):
Pestana Plaza Mayor (right on Plaza Mayor and with a pool) - bit.ly/30HN725
    Gran Hotel Inglés - bit.ly/2HD8REI
    The Pavilions - bit.ly/2VSsFIi
    Vincci The Mint - bit.ly/2Xam51o
    7 Islas - bit.ly/2QuDGi0
    1. Cádiz. Right in the old town, I love the wonderful Hotel Boutique Convento Cádiz, housed in a renovated 17th century monastery: bit.ly/2VSszjU

Valencia would be first choice for my next trip to Spain. Having been to Jerez and Cadiz several times, I'm 2/11 per your video. I've always preferred to get out of the large cities and into the country. Have a trip all worked out, bicycling from Madrid to Cadiz. All I need is a few more crazy people to join me.

Thank you so much. I have just come back from Spain and Italy with my daughter and son in law.. because he promised when he was dating my daughter to take me to any country i wanted to, in my heart of hearts to see. I wanted Spain! Oh my ! I love Spain so much. One of my special moments..among many was Besalu. Stunning in it's beauty. We drove and air Bnb from Barcelona to Besalu and found ourselves in the old quarter, in the middle of a film set for Westworld!!! Ha! .. AND the beautiful and stunning Ronda! so gorgeous! Massive cliff face withe village clinging to it's tops. The Sierra Nevada and the rugged ,strange mountain range absolutely floored me. I have eaten so well and am a Vemud junky, Albondigas are my fave food and cava and I want to cry because I want to go back now! Cadaques was stunning and Setinel de la Bodega was where i had a tomato that bought tears to my eyes. I love Spain and she is in my blood now. Thank you for your love for her.

I fly into Barcelona late April. This is my third visit to Spain. I wish I'd discovered your videos before previous trips. Discovered you quite by accident and thought "That guy sounds like a Kiwi". Have watched many of your videos now. I am 73 and travel independently although joining a Spanish-Kiwi couple and their daughter Moana in the south of Spain where they live.
I felt an instant connection to flamenco since my first flamenco class 30 years ago under a Spanish teacher. I no longer dance but love flamenco in all aspects and love the history, especially of Andalucia.

Good point about generalization.. in another video you mentioned that people in Spain don’t really do siesta. That was my experience also when I was in Barcelona recently. But back in 2003, during the Iraq war, I med-evaced a wounded Soldier from Iraq to Naval Station Rota Spain (about 100 miles north of Gibraltar?). I wasn’t able to get out and see the town until around 12:30 pm, and they’d rolled up the streets. EVERYTHING was closed and locked up! When I got to the beach to take a dip in the ocean, I found the businesses on the waterfront WERE open. I asked one of the employees at a beachside bar why everything was closed in town and he said “Siesta”. At the time, I was a Critical Care Care & Trauma RN in a Field Hospital, serving in the US Army. Later that night I was in a nightclub on the coast about 30 miles south of Rota, in some place that my Navy companions referred to as “Porto”. I was concerned because the war was very unpopular with the Europeans and was worried about hostility or trouble with the locals. To my surprise, even though they somehow immediately recognized me as an American, they were all SO kind.. buying my drinks and asking me to dance with them, etc. They put me at ease and made me feel very welcome. I’ve LOVED Spain ever since, and return on vacation every chance I get. It’s a beautiful county with beautiful people! 😎

Big cities changed with globalization. Used to be, in the early 1970, la siesta, everything closed down, and I was used to go for a walk and felt weird, I was the only one out in the streets. Also, el sereno, another tradition, if you came home late, like 11 or 12 and maybe couldn't find your key, you clapped loud and the sereno came around and opened the door for you, I guess he had every building keys!

I second James' agreement and your original comment. My parents in law live in Bilbao and I was married there. I know the North pretty well and I love it. My Spanish family come from Valladolid and so they travel between those two cities. I'm very familiar with Castilla y Leon. A region I find endlessly fascinating. Madrid is an exciting centre and a city I very much enjoy with a bit of everything. (I deeply regret the hostility between the two great cities of Madrid and Barcelona - It's not a competition guys.) Once you go south of Toledo it's a different country. La Mancha and Extramadura are not very well explored but fascinating to anyone interested in Iberia. Finally it's the brilliance of Andalucia (where I have a little home), which in terms of natural landscape has to be the most varied in Spain and, probably, the rest of Europe as you say. I've still to explore Galicia and Valencia properly but that will happen. I love the in-between spaces of Spain. The landscape between journeys. It's spectacular driving country with a lot of glorious hidden gems.

What a wonderful video! I knew Cadiz would be up there. I love the way you both bring a native Spanish and 'Non Spanish' but Spanish speaker perspective to this. I dream of visiting all these places in Spain; as a keen 'Spangna-phile' (have I just bastardised this), I have visited many places - admittedly the more touristy places but I'm keen to get off the beaten track.
I always forward your videos to my wife for ideas and to keep reminding her of our plans to visit more of the beautiful country of Spain.

Hey guys, from my personal travels in Spain , I would add the beautiful Santillana del Mar in Cantabria. It was like traveling back in time! A small medieval village with cobblestone streets, artisan shops, dim lights at night, I found it very romantic. There is also a zoo which is a plus for families. There is a torture museum which I enjoyed a lot ( I think I need to see a shrink 😂) then we took a ride to Comillas, another great charming village, this one is by the sea and hosts Gaudi’s Capricho monument, very much worth a visit. Both had amazing seafood dishes x

I love the fact that many of the top places you mention are in Andalucia. We spent this past April back in Spain ( and went to La Hora del Vermut while between trains in Madrid, THANKS!!) and try to return every year. There is SO much to tell about the culture and the food and wine. You mention chicharrones alot, don't forget the torrezno in Pamplona, chicharrones on steroids!!!Please keep doing what you do. I just wanted to say thank you for such an enjoyable time and for really educating me about Spain through its food, which has really helped me better understand the food in San Antonio, Texas. I moved here 21 years ago from San Francisco because I couldn't afford to buy a house (one of the few reasons to have left) and as I have learned about the Mexican food, which is markedly different than the same in California, I was introduced to so many new foods: breakfast tacos, chorizo, migas, al pastor, pico de gallo, etc, but to hear about what is in migas in Spain, or rather what is missing (no tortilla chips? lol), and to slowly but surely see how the tortilla really means something different, and how overall the cuisine is much more "European" than "Mexican", really turned my mind upside down for minute. It was very welcomed. Thanks!

Thank you James and Yoli for creating these videos, and sharing your passion for Spain. I visited Spain while on a 3 week trip to Europe, and it really spoke to me - the wonderful food, the warm people and the easy way of life... We’re planning on retiring in Spain, and we can’t wait. These videos keep us going, so continue the great work!

Hi. Just came across your videos. I'm a Canadian living in Burgos and this is my fifth year in Spain. I plan to finish the Camino this year and I want to explore Aragon and Extremadura... There are lots of nice cities here but I really enjoy the small villages. Some of my favorite places so far...Ronda... Albarracín... Setenils de las bodegas ... Puentedey... Oña...etc I studied history so for me Spain is great because everywhere you go there is a monument, ruins, a monastery etc

Great video, muchas gracias. Personally I would have to include the Picos de Europa, an absolute paradise. I know you included Oviedo but the park is just simply stunning and hardly anybody seems to know about it. Breathtaking, literally!!

      @rayvogensen2983 5 років тому +2

Sadly your comment "hardly anybody seems to know about it" is no longer true. Picos is stunning but is now becoming overrun with tourists. There are so many now during the summer that you can't drive up to the lakes but must go by bus. A similar phenomenon has occurred with the Playa de las Catedrales. During the summer you can only go down if you have made a reservation.

....what a mouth-watering presentation of fantastic and unique places in Spain!! And your enthusiasm for your home country (Yoly) of choice (James) is very infectious! I've walked the Camino Frances twice, and was amazed by many of the places, and of course Santiago and Finisterre. I also spent holidays in the Alpujarras, walked the Capiliera area (inspired originally by Chris Stewart's books), been to Ibiza and many of the Canary Islands... love Spain so much! I get, why Cadiz is at the top of your list... will have to check it out - for sure!

Love Salamanca. Incredible history, art and architecture. It has so much it's hard to believe how much of the old city was destroyed during the Franco period. (Not getting political guys, it's just a fact.) The cathedral is sensational, especially the original one. The clean air of the region has ensured the wall art is almost like yesterday. Probably the best Plaza Major in Spain.

My paternal ancestors are from the village of Morga, near Gernika and Huercanos in La Rioja, so I really wanted to go there, its not only the food, the people are great. Another drink I tried there was Kalimotxo, easy to make but very refreshing. I still make it at home.

Well, this was unexpected. Very good video this week. Way to mix it up.
While we love the amazing food tours you take us on, this was really cool of you to show us around the county(some place not Barcelona, Sevilla etc) We loved it!
For us this was particularly helpful because we visit Spain, 2- 3 weeks at time in the off seasons, to avoid crowds, pretty much every year since 2003( hanging out mostly in Madrid, our home away from home) but lately we've set our itinerary's to spend the first 7-10 days seeing new pueblos in the country, then unwind the last week back in a flat in Madrid, visiting our favorite "old" places whilst adding new favorites to our trip. This is where Spain Revealed comes in!
This year is Northern Spain/Picos de Europa on a 10 day drive, then back "home" to Madrid. Maybe, we'll bump into you again this year.
    Great work!
    Thanks J & Y
    Hasta Luego

I organised a trip with friends to Ubeda, Baeza and Cazorla in Jaen. The Renaissance architecture in Ubeda is fabulous and when we first went very unexpected, like being in Italy. Olives made the area rich in the 16th century when a lot of the buildings were built, but the family fueds made everyone too poor to replace them so they have been preserved. In Baeza there are also Roman remains as well as the renaissance, the University is a lovely place to have breakfast. Cazorla is a short drive away in the national park, and is great for walking and visiting the bars afterwards. We had a wonderful 3 days.
