i always loved that in the story of Berserk, the sword is considered impossible to wield and no one believe Guts can wield it. in fact, earlier in the story he has a lighter sword which is already considered too big. that universe has crazy monsters and magic, and even in that setting everyone is shocked by the sword lol. i've seen the anime so many times, what a classic
Ironically, many of the metalwork YT channels that attempt this go for a scaled down version, like the showpiece swords that Godo competed with. This will be the first to actually live up to the source material.
This just shows just how much effort Godot put into this one Sword. And the noble who commissioned the weapon scoffed at it. I would have had this sit as the centerpiece of my manor/castle to say the least.

What makes the Dragonslayer so iconic as THE Giant Fucking Sword, is the fact it's explicitly stated to not be magical in anyway when Guts gets it. Every other giant sword you see in media has a level of plausible deniability for it's unwieldy nature. Cloud's buster, he was a magic super soldier. Inuyasha's Tessaiga, he's a demon. Inchigo's Zangetsu, he's a super natural soul reaper. Guts' dragonslayer? Giant fucking slab of metal wielded by a normal human running off spite and rage.
I couldn't agree more. Sure, no one could ever actually lift it but at least they made an attempt to explain it. Even showed a progression of larger and larger swords that Guts used as he grew up. Logs tied to swords, him training with the waterfall, etc etc etc...

The cutting with your mill is the difference between conventional milling and climb milling. There is a difference in surface finish and how it cuts as you have learned with this project. The blue chips are good as well it means that the chips are carrying the heat away from the work.

But I can understand why Mike came to you with the FF8 sword at least 😅 You're clearly barking mad, but as a fan of Mike it's safe to say that's a quality I appreciate! For the table problem at the end, I think using soap would be quite helpful in future projects, that way all the weight is still sustained yet the friction is less of a problem

No, Mike's build (as per the customer's request) was with half-inch steel if I remember correctly. This is the first I've seen anyone go for the true dimensions, including the insane thickness, which makes a world of difference.
It would basically be impossible, unfortunately. There are industrial forging processes with gigantic building-sized power hammers and such, that's the only way it could really happen.
@@Darian.. Yes, absolutely. You'll never really see anyone forging anything by hand over say 20 or 30lbs (with some rare exceptions). I think the biggest I've ever seen personally was a 2-man forging process with approximately 50lbs of steel. So you can imagine that this slab at 10x that size would be completely impossible.

Honestly, as a total layman, I love that milling machine. It's nice seeing fairly old technology still being used, I think it's super cool.

Use a nice, thick coat of some medium viscosity oil. Some soaps contain detergents you don’t want on your machine table.

@@PrettyHateMachining Odds are without the modern era's helpful machines I'd say it would be more of a group effort in making something that massive and it'd still take ages.

Awesome work man. Maybe you should try making a Astoria Greatsword from Dark Souls III, it's way more "doable" than this one, so you can probably make and even use it
I don't know who is more of a madman, Godo for making the sword, Guts for using the sword or you for replicating the sword

I don't think it'll be possible to lift let alone merely heavy. My man's gonna need to build himself an iron man suit just to pick it up

Nah, he's only made thin versions like I have. To my knowledge, no one has ever attempted this.
Makes me appreciate Godot even more, considering he made this sword by himself probably without a forklift :D

dude i was just watching a cthulhu video and thinking if he ever makes a berserk sword again he should make it the proper thickness, either make it hollow or just say damn the ability to even lift the thing without a crane. And here you are doing the thing! : D
Love what a mountain of work this was already and if i´m a real dick i could say you made it straight, cut the tip and covered it in vinager in a 30 minute video^^
