The Secrets & Lies At The TOP of MultiLevel Marketing | Cult Horror Story

- Josie Naikoi (@notthegoodgirl ) climbed to the top 1% of the MLM industry, only to find that it was as dangerous and manipulative as any cult. Multilevel Marketing (sometimes called direct sales, network marketing, work from home jobs 2022 or social selling) companies forces their members to keep working and selling no matter what, and ruin them financially and mentally if they can't keep up. She is now a prominent antimlm figure, discussing the mlm fails of the likes of origami owl, monat global, farmasi, lularoe, norwex, plexus, the body shop at home, doterra and isagenix.

Can you imagine being caught up in a cult like an MLM? And who should I interview next?
You could interview me. Been there, done that. Went pretty far up. Quit when I saw the lies.
@AndrewGold1 Please look deeper into the MLM con. Even in Europe, where such schemes are illegal, Avon continues to push it's MLM.
what about the guy from woodward tv he is very interesting
How about one or more of the polygamy cults? The Order (Amanda Rae or Eskel Grant or both), FLDS (Growing Up in Polygamy), or AUB of Sister Wives fame (Leah Garcia).
I recommend you talk to Roberta Blevins to learn about her experience in the MLM world and now as part of the anti-MLM movement.
Avon, Amway, Tupperware, Scentsy, FashionTwoTwenty, YoungLiving Essential Oils, Pampered Chef, Norwex, ColorStreet Nails are just a few that I can think quickly. MLM's are very common.
In France, MLM's are banned and Tupperware exists because there's no upline, you're directly related to the company.
@@coraliemaupu893 Ikr. Considering online shopping nowadays, at some point, MLM will not working. Instead, in my country, Tupperware use 'branch office/storage system'. No huns.
And, let’s not forget ItWorks, Melaleuca (The non-mlm MLM 🙃), and Total Life Change (TLC)
I don't know if this company is new, but a friend of mine from college is involved with L'bri Pure & Natural. 😔
Actiderm , Lulu The body shop at home
I have been watching Josie’s videos for a while and over joyed that you 2 have teamed up for this video! So glad she is spreading her truth & Thank You for sharing!
Thank you Fae !
Excited for this. I watch Josie’s videos. Her video editing skills and story telling make her documentaries feel like a TV high production film. Definitely recommend for anyone who likes cult or MLM content.
she is so so good, thanks jemma!
Totally agree! I love her production!
Me too I’ve watched Josie for awhile and am a bit new to Andrews videos but since I like them both I’m sure this will be great.
Thank you Andrew and Josie. This is great information.
When I first focused on MLM schemes I saw it as just another way to defraud gullible people. As a medical regulator I saw MLM companies cater to medical professionals. This occurred when the insurance industry was tightening the purse strings, and many professionals were looking for ways to keep their income levels up. We were able to nip it in the bud in my state, but I did see enough to know what she says is true. A few MLM companies are able to skate along at the edge of legitimacy, but others really do devolve into cults.
It's rough because people are really abusing their friend base. When I was approached for these things I felt it devalued the friendship. I would and still do break off contact.
Honesty.
How refreshing ❤️
She mentioned Arbonne. I did this MLNM, years before they sold off the company. It took going to Las Vegas, seeing 25,000 sitting in arena, going nuts, being told multiple times to buy buy buy products over & over, to realise the insanity. I then left. Never regretted leaving.
This was a great episode! I think almost all of us have been approached by an MLM piranha!
One tried to hook me the summer I had 12 spine surgeries! I was about 24. My wonderful friends arranged a find raiser dinner for me (to afford all the surgeries and months off work). "Katie" tried to get me to take the money they raised for me and invest it in arbonne (under her, of course!).
Thankfully, Sarah (friend we had in common) told me she wouldn't be comfortable donating to me, if she knew the money was going to arbonne & not a Dr. That was all I needed to back me up enough to stand up and say NO to "Katie". (Sarah's still my friend 20yrs later. Every so often I thank her for having the courage to say that. I know she lost respect for "katie" over that too.
I clearly wasn't in my right mind. My body was broken(literally); my mind was on all sorts of pain medications and she thought "I know this girl (from church) she'd be the perfect mark!"
Funny how she stopped helping with the dinner after I turned down her 'offer to help w my future'.
glad u enjoyed! and that is mad!
Wow that is a whole level of predatory!
@@nicolae6173 right? I was uncomfortable in the moment but when I was clear minded and on the mend, I was pretty pissed at her actions. How gross can you be?!?
It's quite an ordeal especially when you DONT get family support and are incapacitated , no matter what age or reason!! Ot is a life changer!❤️we all need somebody to lean on✌️
Friggin Arbonne!!
Great interview about pyramid schemes. One of the elements that isn't mentioned, is that often there are typically sales goals one has to hit in order to move up the ladder. In Amway, for example, sales people end up buying products and stacking them in their garage in order to meet sales quotas. My sister and her husband ended up losing their house because they were buying Amway products themselves, which is never tanable. I'm wondering if this element was also a part of her MLM?
This looks like any average American company 😁 Corporate America is MLM marketing big time.
Insurance does that. I got fooled but left it right away. I could not live with the manipulation tactics.
I almost fell for Mary Kay and the Law one. They grab you, and try to sell you on this materialistic dream. Lucky for me, it's not my kind of dream. I did lose a great friend because I thought her Airboune products were a scam. I bought some items, but she kept playing the victim card. She stopped speaking to me when I wouldn't keep buying. Also, her "manager" was coaching her to play up a sap story. It's weird.
How about Timeshares? It might be an interesting subject to look into
Interesting you speak of timeshares - I was involved in that industry way back in the 80’s. With RSI (Resort condominiums international). There were a lot of sheister developers out there with equally shady salespeople and I would listen to their presentations and promises with gifts it would make me so angry because it was all about the money they could care less about the quality of the build. Urgh still makes me cringe however there were some genuine developers and timeshare model done properly made holidaying affordable.
@Piper Omg, I got my parents out of their timeshares a few years ago in Tahoe and Vegas. I remember as a kid going to our " vacation, home" 🤦🏿♀️.I loved it but thought it was weird we can only go once a year . Anyhow, I fought RSI to "buyback" the timeshares due to their old age and inability to travel. 1 year later, endless hours if arguing they are timeshares free. Scammers.
I feel like Mary Kay Cosmetics is very MLM and cultish to boot!
when she was talking about doubting herself when she first left ( -1:36 ) it's like that when you leave an abusive relationship too. "How could I have believed that was right? What's wrong with me?!?"
NOTHING! They're just good at what they do!
exactly n i q o l e!
@@AndrewGold1 Greg from the behavior panel has a phrase he likes to use. "The organism does what makes the organism successful." That's very apropos w these types of people!
That's because both entities are narcissistic. Cults and MLM's are examples of Institutionalized Narcissistiic Abuse.
Thank you both, good info. What Josie is doing is data collecting/profiling of people. This goes on all the time and people really don't realize that it's happening, especially in social media.
Just Commenting for the algorithm 🧡
This is so interesting!! I'm so glad you are doing this video! Some people don't know there are lots of cults that have nothing to do with religion! Isn't it funny how all the sudden your best friends aren't your friends any more once you don't believe what they believe or do what they think you should do.
"The first couple of years is so fun." So true Josie! And then the gaslighting and cognitive dissidence begins. Thanks Josie and Andrew, it was a great conversation and so enlightening.
Thank you Lisa !!
No, we don't have universal healthcare, but if we did, she either would have been denied those surgeries or been put on a list where she'd have to wait years for the surgeries.... I'm willing to guess that she would've been denied and Im willing to guess, based on her naivety, I know how she votes.
These sorts of predatory marketing we've seen in recent years always seemed sketchy to me. It's a shame that vulnerable folks in financial need lean into these sorts of situations. If you start to see red flags folks, you've got to walk away.
The ad on this video is a MLM recruiting video. Lol
haha no way!! so ridiculous! thanks for letting me know jennifer
This describes insurance! It’s also cultish.
Josie is such a cheerful & knowledgeable guest - her energy is absolutely magnetic. She could talk about cleaning the fridge and make it exciting.
🙂
Wow....I'm being triggered. Many years ago, in an effort to stop smoking, I went with a family member to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings to see if the 12 Step program they were using could help me give up cigarettes. Though I rarely drank alcohol...cigarettes were my "drug of choice"....within a few months I'd been convinced that I was an alcoholic too....that I "just hadn't reached my bottom....yet", but that no matter how little I drank, I could "get off the elevator at any time." ..I was working my steps because it only "works if you work it", attending weekend retreats, had gotten a 'sponsor', was treasurer of my home group, bringing others to meetings, and was giving 'leads' (your story) at various meetings.... meanwhile, the entire time.....I was chain smoking with them! SMDH. It took me more than 3 years to escape the madness of it and no one can tell me that it isn't run just like any other cult....and statistically, not a successfully sobering one. Thank god for one 'light bulb' moment of realization and my return to sanity. I would like to add that since that time I have also recognized the cultist and self-righteous behaviors of mainstream religions and apart from my belief in god, will have nothing to do with any of them. I am also beginning to recognize the cultist behaviors in some politics as I have recently been greatly affected by their shunning and intolerance.
I LOVE HEEEER! She makes such good videos. Great interview.
The times I had been approached were through a few close friends and would be invited to their events - they were so ridiculously hyped up it made me question why are they trying so hard to convince me? Something wrong with this. It made my skin crawl. I thankfully had this niggling voice that would prevent me from signing up and remember coming across books on commercial cultism and psychology of marketing - these insidious and pervasive ideologies that play on peoples fears feed well into our culture of profit and power . I’d express concern for my friends already “jacked in” but they couldn’t hear the words. I didn’t loose any of those friendships and kept a fairly close eye on how things were going. All three of them made lot’s of $$$ and then lost it. It took them years to realise what they had been sucked into.
It’s the classic numbers game - loads of minions to do the hard grind to make the 1% richer. The psychological gymnastics involved and the impacts it has on susceptible people is straight up abuse and that’s what the law needs to look at.
Our consumer based society is just another cult based on sophisticated psychological marketing using all mediums of communication to infiltrate the population. Profit and power culture is so ingrained into our societies that most don’t even think about - buying unconsciously stuffing their large homes. The monetary system is a game of debt and interest.
What I learned from this is that the real product of MLMs are the people
Found this channel a couple of days ago and now I’m addicted! I’m learning a lot! Thanks
Glad you enjoy it Raychul!!!
The first MLM I joined I realized that this was a scam. I tried two others in later years and lasted probably three months. MLMs are scammers of note. When someone says to me "I have a business opportunity for you ...", but refuses to tell me who the company is, my radar goes into overdrive. It's so unethical and dishonest.
I’ve noticed a few things, including that some MLM’ers keep changing companies, so first they sell you melaleuca, then non juice, then something else. They are always pitching you something new to buy, in the guise of colleagueship or “friendship”. The other thing is that the super achievers (the poster sellers at the conference or convention). Are a bit OCD, hyperfocused on the company and their products. Their whole LIFE and ALL they talk about is the MLM. You don’t even want to talk to them because they’ll lead with something like “I don’t have a rep in Arizona” when I moved to AZ. I told him “Don’t lead with business, OK?”, but I had to TELL him that, that’s how obsessesed and myoptic they become.
And I’ve seen some superachievers demoted for NO reason, just to get them to quit, while cheering on younger achievers (cheaper for the company when the money-makers quit and forfeit their whole down line).
Love Josey!! Was excited to see her on your channel!
Yay! Thank you Christine, she's brilliant!
How terrific to see the shoe on the other foot while Josie is interviewed. She is brave, brilliant, and beautiful, to boot. Everyone who hasn’t already, should subscribe to her channel. Thanks for doing this one; I’m looking forward to the next in your series. I’m becoming a real fan of your channel, Andrew (and I’m hard to please!).

I've worked with several people in mlm over the years. Not all are like this but a shocking number of them are. Calling it a cult is not an exaggeration.
Did you say that you are writing a book about the psychology of secrets?! That sounds FASCINATING!! It is a subject that has always interested me, (family full of secrets🙄)
Ah thanks Sandi, I hope you’ll like it. It’s with a. Big publisher which is good because they’ll make sure it’s good. But also means it’ll be a while til it’s out. A year at least
Sounds like what Shannan Watts was into.
Yep she was in one!
I have never fallen for them, either as a rep or a consumer. But people have pressured me to do so. Scentsy and arbonne
Remember, when people start pitching culture, the word CULT is right in the name.
You know, I couldn't care less about influencers. However, as a bookseller, when I would do introductions for authors on book tours and those authors would take the time to speak kindly of me, or send thank you cards, or Christmas cards I would be really happy. Not because they were necessarily famous- although some were- but because I felt it showed I did my job better than average. At that point I might have been susceptible.
Interesting !
So good! I’ve been approached by what I thought was going to be MLM and didn’t bite, several times
I watched Lu La Rich on Netflix. Some of the top people made bank. Many interviewed were the top 1%.
Great video people, we need to get the word out ❤️🙂💯
Hay thanks from Victoria Canada ❤️🙂⭐ keep going, I'm a victim
I love Josie! Great interview.
Ive been sucked in. What ive realised is that your upline is willing to help you for a little while then after they tend to dissapear.
They're corporations, so of course they're based on secrets and lies.
Sounds like a good book, Mr. Gold: Psychology of Secrets 👍
It's quite funny Andrew that in the bottom left of the screen are the three letters OTE (ie On The Edge). In direct sales jobs - ie commission only or largely - those three letters are used in recruitment advertisements of new sales people, and stand for On Target Earnings. This is usually a figure two or three times what you'll realistically make, but sales people are by FAR the most gullible people to the selling tactics of others, far more vulnerable than average, and they will wholeheartedly believe that amount is attainable, especially as they all believe themselves to be above average salesmen.
Ah no way !!!
I did get involved in one, won’t name either. I became a distributor but never recruited too. The products were good and I did lose weight - about 3 stone, and got healthier. I didn’t get into that level of stress with it. I left when I found out that some products are tested on animals and they wouldn’t confirm any more details than that. As a vegan I couldn’t be ok with that! I’m actually still friends with the others in my old up line. So much of what is talked about here is really familiar!
Also the parties - I’d go to events and yes they were ok parties we had fun but they always seemed to be trying to convince themselves it was the best party ever. I felt a bit sad for them, have they never seen a live band? Been to a music festival? I’ve thrown parties that were more fun because they weren’t about some kind of competition!

What about ASEA? Can you do some research on them?

I once worked for a corporation's inhouse legal team and helped set up an to do MLM sales. (One of the reasons I quit the job.) The corporation had a US office as well as Canadian so I spent hours reading about the laws for some of the states and for Canada - where MLMs are governed by the federal competition act and provincial consumer protection laws. I believe that in all jurisdictions the percentage of members/owner-operators in each Line (up or down) who reach each level of compensation must be disclosed. However, that does not stop the real issue: the deceptive nature of how these organizations present themselves. Similar to the language used by cults (and also ads for lotteries). A chance to "change your life" etc. and a whole lot of excited cheering existing members who are "all in" and who are already "winners". That's without even going into the sales techniques taught of reaching out to family and friends - even those who don't need or cannot afford the product. Many of the mostly women with families who get into MLM marketing end up harming their relationships with their closest friends and family members.
To help people I believe she should tell the world who it is and what company, to warn the victims!!!!
I disagree, there’s multiple companies if she names one she risks getting so involved with lawsuits she can’t help us with spotting them all, plus she does say it’s multiple companies
I tend to think of Avon, Betterware, Amway, Herbalife etc as bulk catalogue firms. Yes, a few people order the stuff but basically it all boils down to people buying Avon etc catalogues in bulk and putting these catalogues through lots of doors. The last I heard the Betterware catalogues were costing a pal 37p each. Imagine how that mounts up? I have seen so many people get hyped up about this shit and bragging about how well they expect to be doing soon, when the truth was they were borrowing large amounts of money to afford these stupid catalogues which many non-mlm firms would pay a lot of money to have delivered free house-to-house.
Wow 😳
Sounds like Scientology. More courses, more products, more BS.
take a look on most of sponsored videos on yt - it's exactly the same mechanism which you are describing - someone who you admire is asking "hey, i'm using that vpn, maybe you would buy it?" :D
marketing is a disease :D
That’s just advertising Piotr. It’s not the same
It all seems to have started really with sciencetology there everywhere I wonder is there any genuine companies
I did Avon back in the day, but never earned a penny
Josie your girlie laugh is addictive.
I am very interested in common psychological characteristics of MLM victims. I think it’s possible that many have an external locus of control.
Everyone is vulnerable to being hijacked, our minds are soooo susceptible to manipulation given the right circumstances that make us vulnerable.
This interview is so organic
Good show as always
