New Zealand in the 1830s is a Māori world, dominated by tribal wars.
Seeking redemption from a dark past, lay preacher Thomas Munro (GUY PEARCE) is on board a trading vessel heading to the newly established town of Epworth, a British settlement in that far corner of the world.
When the ship anchors for repairs, Munro finds himself caught up in a battle between Māori tribes and witnesses the slaughter of innocents at the hands of chief Akatārawa (LAWRENCE MAKOARE). Munro manages to save the life of Rangimai (TIOREORE NGATAI-MELBOURNE), the daughter of Maianui (ANTONIO TE MAIOHA), a rival chief whose land Epworth leases in a delicate arrangement.
As Munro begins to experience the white townsfolk’s entrenched racism and paranoia towards the Māori, he finds himself increasingly ostracised within the community he is meant to serve and realises he has been brought to this isolated British outpost merely to add the veneer of civilisation.
After one of Maianui’s men is murdered under mysterious circumstances, Munro and Rangimai make the difficult journey into prohibited lands ruled by Māori warlords, in the hope of repairing the injustice. However, Munro soon realises he is a pawn in a strategic play of power, and with bloody war between the two dominant tribes now inevitable, he must decide what role he will play and whether his faith is real or of any value.
Guy Pearce has seriously had a career resurrection. Glad to see producers are giving him a chance to bring his intensity to their projects.

Director Lee Tamahori says, “The film gives us an opportunity to see Māori as they were before the influence of Europeans changed their lives forever. Agriculture, clothing, weaponry, transport, and most important of all their relationship with the land, waterways, and sea. This is a film where the European community exists in the Māori world on Māori terms.”

Abolishing slavery
@@philipwilliams6307 You're insinuating that all Māori were responsible for enslaving and killing Moriori and that the British were the saviours of Moriori? 😂😂
It was other Māori tribes who collectively put a stop to offending Māori tribes who were the ones killing Moriori and it wasnt until the British arrived that certain Māori minorities working alongside the British were bribed and coerced into leading further attacks on the Moriori.

Amene brother 🙏
the chief speech part seemed a little Europeanised to me. Not sure if that's how our chiefs used to deliver speeches before war or whatever.
The conquest of the Maori was worth it because otherwise we wouldn't have had Jacinda Ardern. And the giant moa needed to be avenged.
Lol, that's one way to look at it... I just think of how I look white, and yet I have traces of African in me from the Bantu tribe.
Every Maori has Pakeha in their bloodline, and no matter how much they hate on it, the reality is no pure bloods remain. They're all tainted in a way.
They are a disgrace to their ancestors if they don't recognize it and give credit to it, as recognizing and paying homage to ones ancestry is part of one's "mana" and pride.
If it wasn't for the Pakeha, they wouldn't exist, simple as that, just like without the African tribes my white ass wouldn't exist either, so I'm thankful my great great great... whatever how many generations back grand mother or father got it on with some tribal African booty.
Whether it was out of lust or love or arrangement or whatever, I just love that it happened and am thankful that it did.
Now, can I have some special privileges, please 🙋🏻♂️
You are hilarious!
There was no conquest of Maori threw war by the British which is the main source of the word conquest, many battles were lost by the British at the hands of different iwi/tribes do your research and stop being an ignorant fool.
🙄
This is why nz got colonised they were not one all backstabbing each other even to this day they still 2 face back stabber
Yeah, maori were smart compared to a lot of other natives at the time but they were too stupid to work together. They thought they could use the white man to rid them of their enemies
Ok laho piss off
Guy Pearce is a fantastic actor, truly, but I don't know about this movie...
How do you even question his acting if you admit yourself he’s a brilliant actor
@@shykur Not sure what you mean. I'm not "questioning his acting". All I said was that I like Guy Pearce but doubtful I would like this movie, by the looks of the trailer. No idea where you pulled "questioning his acting" from.
I might go see this, I don't speak Maori so I have no idea if they're speaking the old Maori language or the new Te Reo Maori, but it would be cool if they used the old tongue to be more historically acccurate... I know someone who speaks the old tongue, so I might ask them if it is.
I hope they show some Moriori slaves too, seeing as the Moari tribes were waring tribes who owned/enslaved those of inferior races and cultures as part of their spoils.
Which was common back then, just as it was in America and Europe, even the Vikings had slaves.
In a way, the Vikings and Maori had a lot in common, they shared in similar tattoo styles, a sense of honor over combat, and raped and pillaged their enemies, enslaving their people and grew their tribes dominance accordingly.
This movie will be interesting to watch if they keep it historically accurate.
While the Māori definitely had some slavery involved, The Moriori being slaughtered and hunted down by ALL māori was a lie made up by white colonist to downplay what they were doing to the Māori. (Colonisation, Assimilation and more.)
Slave ownership in America, Europe and Scandinavia was restricted to less then 3% of the population.
@forgottowipemybum lol you can't "downplay" something that never happened.

No wrong, they came to NZ and took all Maori Land Maoris don't even own 5% of our own country 🤣
@@MakereCoventry That's what happens when you're conquered... The Maori did the same to others before they lost.

How do you want us depicted? Different tribes having picnics together, shooting the shit, everything nice and lovely?
I know what you mean it has to b OG like when the white man first ever seen a Maori with a foul mask must have been something to see if u ask me
Haven't seen that, was it any good?
@PR-WAY it'll be heavily sanitized in favor of Maori.
A European invader says, " Violence is not the solution"... How hypocratic!
Yes, hypocritical, to a degree, but he doesn't represent his people. He represents himself and by the looks of it his religion.
And while you may point to times the Bible was used to fight wars, you need to point to scriptures that weren't misused and wrongfully misconstrued in a manipulated manner to support said wars.
Many peaceful religions, such as Christianity, were taken out of context and twisted to fit a narrative that was hypocritical to its actual message/teachings.
So this man probably doesn't agree with his people's wars and believes in peace all around, and not necessarily exclusively for just the Maori... which wouldn't make him a hypocrite.
But I haven't seen the film, perhaps he'll try to justify why the crown can invade others' lands and why the Maori can't, because if he does that, then he's a blatent hypocrite.
@@philipwilliams6307the British didn't invade them. They traded with the Maori and legally purchased land from Maoris in mutual agreements. It wasn't until the land the British bought went from barren to bustling and prosperous settlements that they suddenly wanted it back and when they started invading, killing and eating British settlers, that the British fought back and won. The British did not start the land wars, they finished them.
@MinorityRespecter88 Well, I'm not a historian, so I can't speak to what you said, so I'll need to take your word for it... I do know that the British have had a bad rep, especially in those times for their invasive approaches and take by force nature. I have both Irish and South African Dutch settlers' blood in me, so in a way, I can't act too biased as I have heritage from the sides that were both victims and perpetrators respectively.
Just look at how the brits won the boer war with concentration camps. It was a real shitty move, probably to get war crimes held against nowadays under international law but an effective tactic nonetheless.
That said, something I keep hearing from Maori groups is how there's been a cultural genocide and how horrible they've been treated and the need for reparations.
However when you look into the history and fall of the Moriori, you find out they're pacifists and their religion and culture was of harmony with humans, Maori saw this as weakness and conquered and enslaved them and eventually literally genocided them, before they did however, they banned them frok their religious practices, their cultural customs, and systematically killed off their people's entire identity, they committed genocide religiously, culturally, metaphorically and physically, the only way they survived longer than they would've was because some slaves were returned to New Zealand.
Upon their return, they were informed that slavery wasn't permitted under the queen's reign, and they'd be held responsible for treason of sorts if they didn't comply.
I'm all for reparations when it is just, but the blatant ignorance and disregard to what would be a nationality if it wasn't for Maoris invasion and enslavement of another people's seem very hypocritical.
In what way have the Maori atoned for what they did to the innocent pacifist Moriori? What have they done to show their remorse? What have they said in acknowledgment of the atrocities their people committed.
If were to give the Moriori reparations for slaughtering and impoverishing and genociding their everything until taking their very lives? What's fair in retribution for them?
What money from the Iwi has been dedicated to washing the blood of their ancestors for the wrongs they committed?
What did the British do that was worse than what they did? To be raped is terrible, to be killed is worse, to have your family killed and eaten is worse than that, to have your entire nation destroyed into oblivion, if you think about it, the British were merciful, because I bet if you had a single survivor of the Moriori with a spirit for vengeance be asked what they'd want for reparations, they'd demand their lives, eye for an eye.
You kill all of my people, then surely a life for a life is in order, especially since you claim yourselves incocent desite our unarmed peoples blood on your hands, our peace with your hate, and our gentleness with your violence.
Maori call for justice but never mention the injustice they inflicted, only the injustices they suffered, funny how people only want equality when it benefits them.
They stepped into a land where war was worshipped as a sacrid practice, they needed to become violent to survive.
Your lust for defenseless victims to prey on were your undoing.
@@MinorityRespecter88yeah they did invade! Like they did many countries. Although you Brit’s like to justify, it’s just best to STFU
no thanks.
OK assfan
Are maori women allowed to fight?
Yeah. There were some that were chiefs (cheiftess??) even. It wasn’t until the introduction of religion that women’s roles were changed.
@@mrbrightside2742 Heni Pore is one of the more famous warrior women. She fought during the Tauranga Campaigns in many battles and became a person of legend among the British.
Te Ao Kapurangi was a chieftain who opposed Hongi Hika during the Musket Wars.

The colonniser is NOT the hero in history
If it wasn't for the colonizers, land wouldn't have been stolen, but if it wasn't for the colonizers, you wouldn't exist, but slavery still would... So I guess it depends on what you value more, land vs slaves, being part pakeha or never existing... there's no more pure blooded Maori. Everyone's been tainted by the colonizers' blood... perhaps if the colonizers came sooner, the Moriori might still be alive, too.
That's an aspect of history I never hear the Maori looking for reparations speak about how they stole, killed and enslaved a peaceful people and tribe, forbid their own religious and cultural practices and even forbade the use of the native tongue and eventually genocided their people altogether.
At least the colonizers let you live. In fact, they made a treaty with the Moari people and married them and procreated with them.
The Spanish would've exterminated them, New Zealand is very lucky the Crown of England decided to grace it with it's mercy and reign.
My people were thrown into concentration camps, mainly the women and children, they burned their crops and housing and killed their livestock, they forced my people to surrender to their rule, and Maori instead got a special type of peace treaty.
So I agree, the colonizers who weren't the heroes but neither were the Maori, but they definitely got the better deal compared to the many others under their reign.
Heck America had to fight for their independence, you could always take up arms and try fight the New Zealand Army and see to your own independence if you like, but I can assure you a their guns have improved a lot since the Musket, but by all means, take back your land and defend by blood as your Maori ancestors would, good luck waging war against the police, army, airforce, navy and SAS and Australia and the UK to garner your independence again... but leave me out, I'd rather live under the crown than go back to living in a hut like my ancestors did.
The "coloniser" abolished slavery in New Zealand and ended cannibalism.
@MinorityRespecter88 The coloniser was such a lilywhite saint 😂
@@vee8648 I mean compared to the cannibal pirate Maoris, yeah, he was.
