The belt angle at the drive gear looks very high. This may cause the belt to slip once the gantry is moving faster

You could do that, since you don't need the resolution or torque. Bigger spur gear could work, too. But I guess ultimately it doesn't matter unless this is the timing bottleneck. It's probably either this, or reading the card, right?
