Do the DL way. Extremely simple compared to your approach and very very fast. Did that with Pokemon Cards, 18K cards, within 3 hours I was all done with a perfectly working DL recognition card scanner

Cool project. I am no expert either, but I think you might speed-up training if you train it for feature extractions. Meaning, instead of training of each card you would train to detect features like color, set symbol etc. The training set would be way smaller.

i think you should just have the catch basins be curved a J shape, such that when the stack is tall, the card just falls onto the top, and when the stack is low, slides along the curve and then slides onto the pile when it hits it
