- In American Horror Story Season 6, a couple moves into a farmhouse in the woods, where horrific supernatural events occur. Greg and Ryan break down Episodes 1 & 2 of AHS Roanoke.
Welcome to My Roanoke Breakdowns, where Ryan and Greg revisit AHS Roanoke. AHS Season 6 is streaming right now on Netflix and Hulu, so follow along with us! This week, we are breaking down Chapter 1 and Chapter 2.
Season 6 is based on the real-life events of the Roanoke Colony. Specifically, the Lost Colony from 1587 led by John White that completely disappeared. It’s unexplained to this day. Approximately 112-121 colonists vanished, leaving only the word CROATOAN carved into some wood -- referring to the local Native American tribe.
Some speculate that the colonists may have assimilated with the tribe or wiped out by disease or a violent massacre at the hands of the Native Americans. But let’s be clear, there is no tangible evidence of any of this.
So what happens when you buy a home on this sacred land? Matt and Shelby Miller find out in American Horror Story: Roanoke.

I will never understand the hate that this season gets, its literally in my top 3
it’s my top fav but that’s probably because it’s the first one i watched, while i was watching it i had no idea until like episode 3 that it was part of a bigger line of shows and i couldn’t understand the hate for the season either, i’ve since seen more of the show in general but this one is always gonna hold a place for me, my second fav has gotta be AHS 1984.

I didn’t like Roanoke at first, but it grew on me; however, I think the ending did play a factor.

exactly, honestly i’m glad this season exists, i found the show in general through this season, so i don’t care how much some other people may not like it i legit love this season sooo much, this and AHS 1984.

same, it really got me in some episodes, and i’m glad some people can see how great it is, like for new people to AHS it’s beyond scary at points and really interesting to watch too.
THIS IS MY FAV SEASON, the acting difference between the "real" and "actors" is so good! and casting the real ghosts as looking less recognizable and less interesting/more dead was sooooooo good! i paused the mott moment in the second half to show everyone around me that they made him just look like a guy. PLUS you know in the first half who lives, the 3 main interviewees.. then episode 6 happens
P.S Something people NEED to remember when watching this season is that if its in the first 5 episodes, its dramatized, that means if Shelby Matt or Lee don't say it in the interview, it may not have actually happened, as in it was made up for the show

They know through genetic testing what happened to the colonists. They assimilated in with the tribe which is my current members of the Croatoan tribe have genetic markers that indicate European heritage

That's the most logical explanation but for some reason ppl just wanna make everything supernatural or an unsolved mystery
Okay so I think it's important to understand that we're not actually watching Shelby and Matt. We're watching actors portraying Shelby and Matt based on stories told by Shelby and Matt.
It really explains the narrative inconsistencies and it's super interesting when you watch the talking head stuff on its own.
That isn't obvious???? I have not met a single person that didn't know that they were actors portraying them. They even say it more than once...
@@peachyqueen4399 oh, that's not what I meant. I'm talking about the POV. We're not watching an objective narrative. We're watching a story that was told and then fictionalized to make spicy. It's very meta and probably one of the reasons I love Roanoke so much!

AHS: Hotel = *The Sims 3 Late Night* (the vampires + the Cortez-like buildings)
AHS: Roanoke = *The Sims 3 Pets* (the strong farm vibe + the (bigger) presence of animals)
AHS: Cult = *The Sims 3 University Life* (the mobs and groups that can be formed + the political stuff)
AHS: Apocalypse = *The Sims 3 Into The Future* (the time traveling + the destroying/saving of the future world)
AHS: 1984 = *The Sims 3 70's, 80's & 90's* (the nostalgia + the similair time era "around the 80's)
AHS: Season 10 WILL BE *The Sims 3 Island Paradise* (the strong aqua vibe + sea monsters, mermaids, pirates and boats)

I liked this season 🤷🏻♀️ The double story of the “real” people and their actor counterparts was an interesting way of telling the story and different to most shows. I’m looking forward to watching these breakdowns!!

It's funny how a lot of fans absolutely hated this season while the critics praised it... Personally it's my second favorite after Asylum and the only one that actually scared me. The "real" ghosts were disturbing AF
I know that Roanoke wasn't too popular amongst some AHS fans, but anything that has Kathy Bates and Dennis O'Hare in it is worth the watch.
This is my first time watching AHS, and I am in love with Dennis O'Hare. He was good in Freaks, but Liz Taylor was such a beautiful character, and he played her so well.
Roanoke is my favorite season. It's so underrated. For a series that is notorious for dropping plots, this one actually completes every arc. And when they keep adding meta commentary about the media, that's even more impressive.
I watched this season late after people said it wasn't good. Then I watched. One of my favorite seasons and one of the only ones to scare me. Loved both Lee's.

This season actually brought me back into AHS. I had missed a season and binged this, and I loved the different premise!

Why people hate this season? This season has more Horror than any other season. And i really love that found footage style
I don't like found footage in general. It's find as a project for my horror lit students, but I wouldn't pay to watch it. There hasn't been much of it so far in this season, but I just reached epi 5.
honestly this is my favorite season out of the franchise.
Amazing season with great scares (The Butcher, the Asian ghosts, the Evan Peters gay ghost, the Piggy Man, the hillbilly cannibals). And the house was so beautiful!!! I would so move into that house. Probably one of the most beautiful houses along with Murder House and Coven in the AHS series.
You could just call it the Evan Peters gohst. I don't see why his sexuality matters, because you wouldn't have pointed it out if his character was straight.
This was the only season I watched and it scared the bejesus out of me 🤣 so now every time we drive through Roanoke I panic lol
Finally my favorite season!! Maybe after Greg can potentially convince Ryan (and the fans) why Roanoke is actually great, people will finally put some respect on Roanoke 😂😂
im so excited you guys are doing this season! it's also one of my favs, if not my favorite. There's a show called paranormal witness that is also like paranormal survivor, a haunting, etc. thats one of my fav paranormal shows and I immediately knew the format when Roanoke started because of that.

Roanoke is one of my favorite seasons and is definitely in my top 5. It's highly underrated. Also, to add, The lost colony isn't really a mystery anymore. They have already updated that to include the evidence they have found supporting that the colony did, in fact, integrate into the local population based on local stories, coins, jewelry, etc that came from the colony. There's even been some DNA testing done, if I'm not mistaken. And, if course, "Croatoan" craved into the fort gatepost and "Croa" carved into the tree. I don't know why this keeps being hyped up as some big mystery. It's kinda silly at this point.
With that said, Roanoke is a good season.

I loved this season so much, Its so underrated, I think it gets so much hate because this season was probably one of the scariest alongside asylum and freak show, because let's be honest, this season was scary as hell

FINALLY!! Roanoke is my favourite season! I just don’t understand all the hate it gets
For me, it was because people hyped it as scary but it wasn't scary at all.
The storyline was also boring and predictable. Typical final girl archetype and the most boring of all the females surviving through the end. No interesting storyline whatsoever. Also, feminism is really bad. I can ignore the feminism though. The writing is just amateurish like season 3 (but season 3 is way worst).
@ I get that it’s not scary, there hasn’t been an season of AHS that has scared me yet. But I think I enjoyed this season the most because it was a different structure with the mockumentary style and yeah the story is predictable and the final episode isn’t the best but I kinda liked how it was a tropey horror series
It bums me out people hate this season so much. Maybe it’s just nostalgic because it reminded me of watching A Haunting with my mom all weekend as a kid, but it remains my favorite of the series.
This was my first season of ahs and it made me fall In Love and binge all the other seasons so they did a great job with this one
In the Polks’ (Polk’s?) defence... they probably would have eaten the pig. So maybe it was a peace offering? (I thought the butcher left the pig? I haven’t watched Roanoke since it came out... all of my facts are probably wrong. Sorry)
I definitely do not think the Polks wanted peace. What grown adults do you know that get verbally & visually aggressive to total strangers when they lose an auction? That alone, showed that they weren't just normal every day people. Even the sheriff said that the Polks weren't easy to find & did not like to be messed with. Interesting view though. & I think you're right, the butcher left the pig.

Roanoke is the paramount season.
I personally really enjoyed this take on reenactmnent tv shows, didn't quite like the story per say but it was a nice breath of fresh air. I feel like all of the seasons bring something very, very interesting (apocalypse excluded, but that's a can of worms I really, really don't wanna bust open) to the table. It just gets me excited, like "oooooooh, what's it gonna be this time around"..not a lot of tv shows out there that get me like ahs does :/
I do agree that the marketing definitely did this season dirty. A common complaint I heard at the beginning was that was shot differently. I loved the mockumentary style so much, it reminded me so much of the old ghost story/paranormal recounts that would come on discovery/history channel late at night.

I'm shocked that Greg said the raining teeth weren't enough for him to leave, especially as a Black man 😭 AND he quoted the Eddie Murphy stand up. He knew better. The teeth were the "We gotta go, baby." moment!😂

This season has definitely grown on me after all these years
I wish the show would have leaned into the "Mockumentary" angle more. I'm not sure how, but it felt a bit weird around the edges; however, it was a fun ride and an interesting take on the concept.
The raining teeth is memorable, for sure.

So the only thing with this season I thought would have done more for apocalypse was that the world now knew at the end of this season that ghost existed with out a doubt since the ghost where killing camera crews on live tv and all the cops that came to the place and nothing was done with that, it just ended with the cops all driving up and being killed. It would have saved the season with me since now the world now knew witches existed. So they could did something with the world knowing the supernatural is real.
I just watched this season over the weekend. It’s such a better season then I remember when it first came out. I regret not watching it then.
It’s crazy cause if u go back and watch the season 6 trailers and teasers they actually go to the new seasons 8,9 and 10 double feature. I like how he gave us teasers before the actual seasons were announced, it was misleading at first now I appreciate Roanoke 100x better
I'm with Greg, I loved this season. It's probably like my number 3 or 4. I don't understand the hate this season gets. Hopefully Ryan comes around in the end and admits how great this season is.

Roanoke was my least favorite season. In other seasons, there were always characters that I grew to love or care about. That never happened with Roanoke. The story was ok. But, I never cared about any of the characters.

I know what you mean, but in this context, this storytelling format, it works, like a collage dependent on all the pieces connecting just so. I like it.

As someone who had family leave me with a woman that wanted to torture me and kill me and he knew vary well what was going on and also is aware im disabled and can't defend myself. I know family will do sh!t even if they know it makes things worse. I don't understand people anymore really

Finally another person that disliked Apocalypse the most. I got bored with it so quickly. It just doesn't feel like it completely fits in the AHS universe. Roanoke also happens to be my absolute favorite.
I am going to disagree with Greg. At 23:44 this is a reference to the Turn of the Screw, possibly the Innocents (I forget). In the novel, the little girl’s name is Flora and she is seeing ghosts! 👻

I didn't give this season a chance when it first came out, and didn't come back to it until just after season 8. Big mistake, it's one of the most lore rich seasons (if you are big into world building, this is amazing) of any of the other season before or since. Everything that is world building before this is only really recognizable in retrospect where as this is just some plain exposition, which I am totally fine with when it's self is central to the plot, even becoming the plot it self, which seems sloppy on paper but in practice is very well done.
