Yes. This is a proper conclusion. The connection between FC and the GPS has nothing to do with it. The only thing that matters is the RF/EM noise around the GPS. So moving the GPS or getting a better "shielded/filtered" unit is the solution. However, I had a similar problem on my flywoo and I had a simple fix. Just move the GPS above the camera (further from the VTX) and it works like a charm now.
I installed my first GPS on the quad I just built (in a Bee35 Pro frame). I went with the HGLRC M100 Mini GPS, which is a pretty dirt cheap, tiny GPS. I added a ViFly GPS-Mate, too. I start the GPS fix process using the button on the GPS-Mate on my way to fly. It tends to be ready when I'm ready to start flying (a couple minutes later) and while I'm flying I tend to see 20+ satellites. I've considered myself lucky from the start :)
Funny, I have the same frame and I use my old iFlight M8 GPS (it was perfectly fixing sats before on a 6" drone) and If I power the drone with the 6s lipo, it needs 10 minutes to get 6 sats :/ So now, I'm using a power bank 2 minutes before plugging the 6s and got 15 sats. I know the GPS mate, I'm using one on a ATOMRC Dolphin it's very nice to keep O3 off before lunching the plane ! Good solution too !
Think I mentioned previously I repositioned the GPS to the front of the quad on a small GPS stalk mount and it works perfectly, when I tried it in the garden I got 18 sats and when I plugged in the battery it didn't loose the lock (I also moved the GPS positive to the 3.3v rail and use a USB power bank to initially power the quad on until I get a lock).
Just had a thought.......it would be great if betaflight was able to detect the bitrate of the dji system so that for example if the bit rate hits 0 mbps for more than a pre set time then the gps failsafe would kick in. So a failsafe for Rx loss and also video loss!
great explanation as always! :) Im using the matek gps module and I can say that its well worth its price. another nice trick im using is powering the gps module from a 4.5v pad - and "warming it up" with a powerbank to usb connection that will power the 4.5v pad without powering the vtx.
Hello pawel, your diagnosis is correct but the only solution is to move the gps as far as possible from the vtx antenna, no change in the gps will help or a better gps if the field where it is located is saturated by radiation and harmonics from the vtx , kind regards
Recently, I saw a drone channel recommending powering up the GPS with a BEC without using the FC 5V supply. So, I will test it as soon as possible to see if the GPS works better.
might but also might not work. Sure, good external BEC might have better filtering than FC BEC, but the problem might be coming from somewhere else or still be not enough
Maybe the VTX antenna which is sending the signal and is over the GPS antenna interferes with its working speed? Why not put a GPS mount above the VTX mount and have clearance for the GPS antenna to the sky so it can work without any obstacles?? All GSP drone manufacturers seem to stubbornly keep mounting the GPS below the VTX antenna - and this does not help in anything.
Those cheaper small GPS got huge interference from Flight controller. My cheap GPS - 3d fix is lost if i move my powered quad closer than 2.5 - 3 cm closer to rear of my quad. Right now im trying to upgrade gps chip firmware, but i think i need just new longer GPS mount.
Great tips....btw when I have problem to get satellite, I connect FC to power bank/handphone in order to turn-on FC. Then after get some satellites/3D TRUE (check using BF on android app), I disconnect power bank then connect battery and fly with GPS locked. As you mentioned, the GPS module getting issue because of VTX signal, that's happen in my drone also. Before I know that way, at least I need more than 5 mins to get sats & causing Core Temp overheat
Perfect timing because I am struggling with this right now. GPS reception is okay now, but I still get some toiletbowling so the mag is still getting interference. My 3D printed mounts are getting longer and longer... lol
Would happen if tried to placed GPS above the front camera? Realize it would interfere with mounting HD camera above; but curious if issue is more interference with VTX, or ESC/FC radio noise. Another option, mounting GPS on top of battery. Again, realize not the most pragmatic solutions; but worth noting/experimenting to collect real life data .. as to source of noise and its radius of influence. ;)
Thanks for your video! I shielded wire with fosil in my Roma F4, it helped, GPS can work somehow, but it's very unreliable and inaccurate, especially, height. I'll try you approach.
I built flywoo explorer lr, with matek GPS+compass, matek FC with baro. And most importantly flashed INAV. Just to keep my mind in peace that the quad can go home and land properly at will or on failsafe.
I just print a different mount for the original GPS to move it a little to the back (around 1.5 cm) In the space added between the GPS and the frame I put also a small buzzer with the battery I used the serial 4 instead of the 5 to use the original wires and I connected the GPS power to the 3.3 instead of 5v Now acquires the fix in less than 1 minute with the cold start :)
