It's so refreshing to watch a man his age changing his mind and accepting publicly he has said or done something he regrets. I do not agree with everything he has said but I just love his personality. ❤
No. You’re wrong Jerry. We want to hear you dissect comedy with tweezers and a scalpel. We watch specials for jokes. We watch this bullshit for the engaging brains that come up with that nonsense. I love it all. I’m not a performer. I’m too old. Never going to become a standup. But I can write. I like playing with words. It’s all about the words. Gold, Jerry.
Seinfeld always makes for an interesting listen. He doesn't get stuck on things, even at 70, and has such an impressively broad view on life. It's good to hear him revise his "comedy is dead" comment. Comedians reflect and adapt to what's going on in society and there's some really good comedy out there right now.
I wonder who got to Seinfeld? Comedy is about NOT respecting the culture. Especially when the culture is driven by extremists on BOTH sides. All politicians deserve to be the targets of comedians because politicians are hilarious. ALL OF THEM are dumb as shit most of the time.
with social media being what it is the days of a Lenny Bruce are over. There are certain groups who can no longer use as the butt of a joke. Is that a bad thing?
He didn’t say it’s about paying respect to culture, he said it’s about understanding where the gates are and working to those. Respecting where the audiences are humour wise and playing towards that. This changes over time. Always has, always will. Old comics fade, new generations form. The best old comics adapt, that’s what Jerry realised. Meanwhile some of his mates like Gervais and Rock (who I previously liked), have been missing those gates recently, and they just aren’t as funny. If they can update their act they’ll be funny again. They have the talent, they just need to get their head out the sand like Jerry seems to have done. Also, you’re right, all politicians should be the but of jokes, and they are. Look at SNL. They are making fun of both sides, even if their bias is clear. That’s fine, and how it should be done. They are remembering the golden rule of comedy: punch up, not down. The issue around comedy recently is that comedians are forgetting this and audiences aren’t enjoying minority groups being punched down on. You can see this in action on one of Gervais’ sets from a few years ago. He did a long bit on Kaitlyn Jenner. Most of it was about her having a penis. Not funny at all because it was punching down at her and the trans community in general. Then he did a quick joke about Jenner killing someone in a car crash (with Jenner the butt of the joke). This was funny as it was punching up at a celebrity. Same person, different jokes, one works one doesn’t.
@@colonelcabbage there's no such thing as a "golden rule of comedy", you can stick that you know where. Comedy must be free and if you don't find Gervais funny anymore you're in a minority. There will always be an audience for edgy humour. People like you will never be able to suppress it, no matter how desperately you try. Pathetic
Jerry's not kidding about Ottawa being cold in the winter. I was born in Toronto & lived in Canada my whole life, and Ottawa is still the coldest place I've ever, ever been. I lived in Ottawa in the late 80s & early 90s & didn't have a car. Ottawa gets and stays over 90F most of the summer, but when winter hits, GET OUT. In the 70s, car tires would pop from the cold. Fuel lines would rupture. What made me leave Ottawa was two nights in a row when it was -50C (-58C) with the windchill values. If you poured out a glass of water, it never touched the ground as liquid. I recall saying out loud to my roommate, "this is below human standards, I can't do this anymore", and left the next week. It's otherwise a pretty clean city, good drivers too, which is an odd thing to even say. But between January and April, it's uninhabitable. It's offensively cold. I know the area Jerry's talking about where the Eastview was - it's actually pretty upscale now - but do yourself a favor & google the postcard for the Eastview. It looks basically Soviet.
I love Seinfeld. So he put his foot in his mouth, and he didn't have a point about scripts. But I get him. It'd not easy out there. He's been misunderstood a lot and he's weathered a lot. The thing that impresses me most is he's happily married and loves his dogs, loves his wife, enjoys his work and is fairly open. I get him because I grew up in show business, and it really IS all about THE SHOW. THE SHOW is everything. EVERYTHING.
Jerry, you are so right - we do NEED you nowadays, maybe more than ever. In 2020 during Covid, you lifted up so many people with your interviews. You were a voice of reason during a really crazy time on earth. I thank you so much for this. Your comedy is a rare talent. Like you once said - good comedy is not sloppy. I love how you observe people and can convey these observations into a language we can digest right away. You help us not to take ourselves so seriously. You help us smile and take a breath. You and Tom are great together here. Comedians and artists are so similar. Thank you both so much for always showing up. USA

A) Jerry is a human being. He is entitled to be loved and to be wrong and get spanked. B) Jerry's miscalculation respecting anyone caring about what comedians think: "that ANYONE CARES about what comedians think is news to me" . . . during an interview for THE NEW YORKER. Hmmm. Yeah, Jer, that was a little out of touch there, bud.
Oh, dudes, you missed the memo: the multitudinous flavors for Kit Kat are a Japan thing. They have a ton of flavors over there. Jerry--you didn't see that over there? And next--Asia has a little story on every product; that's why you see that 'cool glass of lemonade' bit on the wrapper. I know. I lived in Japan 5 years!
Jerry is 100% correct if you watch BOTH parts, the solid-liquid theory AND his takeback comment BUT ONLY IF freedom-of-speech exists. What he obviously isn't willing to challenge is that the "far left" he refers to isn't attacking comedy... they are attacking free speech which WILL ruin comedy if suppressed.
Growing up in central PA, farmland, one trick many intelligent farmers used to do was collect as many eastern black rat snakes (the largest snake in the Northeast) and keep them around the barns and grain silos to control loss from rats. Ancient Asian and African religions used to worship the snake as protectors of the grains and fertility. (Better, cleaner grain, the healthier the population and breeding seasons).
I'm not a stand up comedian in the slightest, and even I know that 'making the gate' set by society is the opposite of comedy. Middle schoolers understand that. That's why they start using 'bad' words.
I think he should do more podcasts once in a while, this human side of him is actually very likable I always thought he was a pretentious person but I enjoyed hearing him have a conversation.
Jerry and Tom i am just that kinda fan! Part of it is because I have been thinking about doing some bits at an open Mic. Now please know that I am embarrassingly 4 years older than you. When I watch you guys I am getting great laughs but some of the mechanics of how you get it done.
This was an excellent interview and discussion. I'm in my 4th year of comedy and it seems tougher than ever these days. But it also seems like something is changing, like the idea of standup is different in what people want to be part of. It's definitely politicized.
I'm 17 min in, and Jerry isn't answering what Tommy wants to know: Why is the industry filming OUTSIDE of Hollywood - the crews are all desperate for work in LA. From hair and make-up to lighting and set crew, so many people are still out of work. It's cheaper to film in Atlanta or Vancouver in some instances. But Tom tried once and Jerry gave a great answer as to the magic of what a comic possesses. When Jerry didn't answer, Tom did a great job navigating it to a lighter direction. Great episode!
Jerry was shocked to hear about the gutted sets and empty soundstages. So he gave an answer about the meta view of show business, but lacked any specific awareness, let alone knowledge of the changes Tom conveyed.
@@ChristineKikiMac Mmm…interesting. although his show must have exposed him to a huge crew for years. You never hear a peep from any of them about working with or for him. But today I heard Julia Louis Dreyfus tell a story on her first podcast about some honcho at a party saying to her isn’t it great how we’re in syndication, and she said, “I don’t own any part of the The JS Show”. He reached on his pocket and handed her a hundred dollar bill. Ouf!
It’s brutal and no one outside the industry knows how decimated and financially gutted film / tv workers have been. I’m a post production supervisor, been in post for more than 20 years and haven’t worked in 16 months. I’m barley hanging on for my family and we will most likely loose our house if things dont start back up soon. People are really hurting right now. It is truly awful.

I love listening to comedians because they see life in an alternate way. Like everything we think we know has like a secret, hidden reading about it.
Jerry’s is the best. What is this the come to papa show? Hahaaaa!
As Greg Gutfeld put it on his show's segment about this..."Who got to him?"
Elaine 😃
he's not stupid, social media has turned against him so he's rebooting his opinions. He doesn't need the money but he does have an ego
@@gerrydooley951He is a coward with no integrity. IOW a typical celebrity leftist.
I know it's impossible to believe that someone might change their mind on their own. Extra funny that you bring up that miserable old man Gutfeld.
Oof! Looks like Jerry just missed a gate and crashed into the fence. He was funny back in the day
Come to Papa is a better show name.
It already happened
That Jerry guy, he’s good with words 👍🏻
He wants to promote his favorite hobby. Leave him be! 😂😂
Jerry seems like such a bro. Great talk!
I don't care about politics, I just love watching every new interview of Jerry Seinfeld.
Exactly 💯
Love this talk with Seinfeld! I discovered Tom on Facebook TikTok! So funny! Love your delivery! Now I have your UA-cam shows to watch! We all need to laugh more than ever now! Thank you❤
Absolutely love this interview. What a great conversation! ♥️♥️♥️😊
10 years ago, I filled a big blue plastic storage bin with comedy material I wrote... I gave myself a deadline... I couldn't perform by the deadline... I picked up the heavy blue bin and threw it off the balcony... I hit my booby while manically hurling the bin... a bump rose out of the depths of my flesh from that hit... It was cancer... which I did not knew I had... my failure as a comic saved my life...
... I should have died many deaths almost hit by cars as a child was into motorcycles in my teens and 20s I had some skin cancer in my early 30s survived Covid late 40s somehow made it to 52 🎅🏼. There isn't a great reason why I'm still around but I'm glad I am best wishes to you fellow cancer SURVIVOR way to kick it's @$$! 😎🫵🏼🌹
What’s with the 180 Jerry?!?! Who’s in your back pocket, that told you to change your tune?

It's so refreshing to watch a man his age changing his mind and accepting publicly he has said or done something he regrets. I do not agree with everything he has said but I just love his personality. ❤
No. You’re wrong Jerry. We want to hear you dissect comedy with tweezers and a scalpel. We watch specials for jokes. We watch this bullshit for the engaging brains that come up with that nonsense. I love it all. I’m not a performer. I’m too old. Never going to become a standup. But I can write. I like playing with words. It’s all about the words. Gold, Jerry.
Jerry : You know what they do in Turkey?
Tom : Hair transplant?
Jerry : No (*and continues with his story about cats in Turkey*)
The strategy behind the lemonade Kit Kat
. . . " For when your product has become TOO good."
Jerry's a nice boy , how can anybody not like him?
He was 38 she was 17 or younger idk if he did things with her tho but he actually dated her idk if thats better but prob not
Jerry .. come on .. we watch cause you’re interesting. Love to hear the stories of your life experiences.
I saw Tom a few months ago in Florida....He was hysterical!! Thanks to both of you for the laughter
Seinfeld always makes for an interesting listen. He doesn't get stuck on things, even at 70, and has such an impressively broad view on life. It's good to hear him revise his "comedy is dead" comment. Comedians reflect and adapt to what's going on in society and there's some really good comedy out there right now.
no he is just spineless lol
@@user-rt4ky3up1f lol...he just doesn't dig his heels in like a stubborn child, he uses his brain and common sense
@@miche_amico I totally agree with you.
That was very kind of Tom to laugh at Jerry's "sponge joke"
He's a generous laugher
This has got to be one of my most favorite Breaking Bread shows. Simply the best❤
So according to Jerry comedy is following the rules set by the current culture and never even daring to offend anyone, how brave
how hypocritical of Jerry ! so disappointed !!
You'd have a great point if the goal of standup was to be brave. Or if he said that.
Internet commenters are like wives… when they say “So” or “Basically you’re saying” … something in summary, you know they will get it wrong. 😅
he's 70, he doesn't have to be brave
Meh, I don’t think he really cares. I wouldn’t worry about it. He’s just placating the morons.
"Why is it called the crisper? It should be called the rotter."
I thought the graveyard bit was funny. I do have an explaination for why they don't fill up, but it would ruin the joke.
This episode is a refreshing glass of lemonade Kit Kat if I don’t say so myself. Cheers!
oh my goodness, two comedy geniuses. I cannot wait to watch and hear this. But first, popcorn.
Pathetic
I think anytime Seinfeld is mentioned people rush to the comments to talk about him dating a 17 year old. Maybe he wants some of that heat off him lol
imagine all that money and still loving the road, he sure is true artist, the Bob Dylan of comedy.
I agree!❤
EVERYTHING.
He DID have a point about scripts.
Yes, the extreme left HAS put pressure on what comedians can make fun of and what they can't.
It definitely affected tv shows and movies, podcasts not so much
@@franchisemiamivideo games and comic books as well.
sad day in comedy holy shit!!
@@franchisemiami looney tunes characters have been wiped away because of it!!
27:50 sponge bit. Hillarious.
USA
too bad he literally gave a douchebag excuse that he then tried to further justify ... he should not have to apologized for having an opinion
1. Jerry was never funny
2. Jerry and Adam Sandler got away with a lot of whiteness in the 90s that they can't today ( inappropriate jokes that only made whites laugh)
3. As Jews they can't hide the arrogance from belief that they're the chosen ones
1:01:30 Fran was sitting next to Maher's question cards and could see that question coming up. That's how her "timing" was so quick.
Hmmm. Yeah, Jer, that was a little out of touch there, bud.
yeah he's not stupid he realizes he's on the wrong side of some issues
@@gerrydooley951 Exactly. It's cool to both call him out on it and cut him slack for it. People be people-ing.
Come to papa is a much better name!
I didn't know Jery was such a coward
Jerry is 100% correct if you watch BOTH parts, the solid-liquid theory AND his takeback comment BUT ONLY IF freedom-of-speech exists. What he obviously isn't willing to challenge is that the "far left" he refers to isn't attacking comedy... they are attacking free speech which WILL ruin comedy if suppressed.
the friendship these two have is just genuine.
The latest flip flop by Jerry just makes me appreciate Norm MacDonald even more.
Ooooooh Jerry...,..
I think comics should say whatever they want to as long as ITS FUNNY!!!
Jerry looking good
I'm not a stand up comedian in the slightest, and even I know that 'making the gate' set by society is the opposite of comedy.
I don't think anybody needs Jerry to tell us the state of comedy. It's soaring with or without him.
Somebody got to the poor guy.
Yeah, his conscience
I refuse to accept that Jerry is 70. He doesn't seem 70. It makes me face the fact that I'm getting older too.
This was an excellent interview and discussion. I'm in my 4th year of comedy and it seems tougher than ever these days. But it also seems like something is changing, like the idea of standup is different in what people want to be part of. It's definitely politicized.
Jerry Seinfeld is a singularly unique individual..😉
Great Show You Guys. I love Comedy and The Stories are GREAT !!! Comedy keeps Me Sane
@@Trenchant468 Agreed. He was truly shocked. However, I got the feeling he didn't connect the dots about the crew. His head was in the artist's space.
@@nickcorney7465 To what do you attribute it. Pandemic, strikes, higher expense in SoCA? All of the above?
“Come to Papa” 😂
