I am so incredibly mesmerized by these poets who break down a topic and put it in a language we all can understand. Who recognize the debate but don't conform to it.
Crowds at poetry slams are actually pretty quiet until the end. Some can get loud in support but that's why people snap. Clapping is loud and the speaker has to wait until they're done so they can be heart
best line: "she is a he trapped by the limitations of our mind." i love so many things about this poem, but that line resonates with me.. we are all trapped by the limitations of our minds.. love this
Wow, what a powerful and amazing poem. So many truths and images to think about. The one sticking with me now is "People get scared enough, they pick a side."
People need to listen to these lyrics and appreciate her opinion. So much of what she says is true and anyone who blindly disregards her art is foolish.
@ljg12220 catholicism is not a religion its one of the denominations of christianity. just like methodist, baptist, protestant, lutheran, etc. but overall, i totally agree with what your saying :)
I am definitly a feminist. I want gender equality for everyone and stereotypes to vanish. I want to live in a world were everyone is equal, where you arn't judged based on your race, gender, or sexuality but on whats in your heart. A world where women can be priests, presidents, or on special forces. where people don't automatically assume that a guy working in a clothing, shoe, or perfume store is guy! That would be an amazing world to live in.
what i think alot do not agree with it is when some feminist bring in personal experience that was most likely cause by men and blame it on men. what would you recommend to be done to avoid this miscommunication in terms of feminist objectives?
being a feminist isn't miserable at all. if you are content with your life and the way you feel it should be lived, then do so, but there are other women who want more and they will strive to achieve that. there is nothing wrong with either perspective, just live and let live.
@WomanAgainstFeminism Why would a feminist be miserable? Feminist, to me, means being a strong independent woman who is not afraid to do things herself and make her own decisions. It is not waiting for the permissions of men or society. If you are a woman who lives life to the fullest without accepting society's or men's constraints, than you, too, are a feminist, whether you use the label or not. To live to the full is to live in constant glory and awe of how amazing life is.
(art 2) i support my fellow non-white, lesbian/bi/trans, disabled women. double, triple, quad, etc minorities are constantly ignored. i can't be apart of the feminist movement because as a bisexual indian woman i'm just blatantly ignored. it's white women they campaign for and sure, white women have it hard but it's like 'ok, first us white women get equal, then we'll work on you lot!' please. womanist for life
I lived next door to some vegetarians once. It was not the smell that was annoying, but the loud singing at the crack of dawn - 'Day-Oh, Dayay-Oh. Daylight come and me waan go home'. What the fuck was all that about?
ive never heard someone say this point as clear as you did. i wish all feminist were more like you. why are most so angry? progress is constant and worth praise so why be so angry..
exactly, i wouldn't accept alimony. but whoever has primary custody of a child, male or female, deserves help from the other party. cause last i checked, neither one of them got that child all by themselves. i also don't have the answer to visitation. i have a friend, whose ex has custody. he is a dr, and she pays him child support. she sees her boys every other weekend. anyway, she is dying of cancer, literally w/in the next 2 months. he's already trying to sue for all of her insurance
I'm a man and I honestly want those things you want to come to pass. I'm not a feminist because I want to be able to walk at night and for women not to see me as a threat because of my gender. I want to be seen as a human being, not as an object that threatens women. I want to be able to speak out about issues of sex and gender and not be considered 'suspect' because of my penis when I'm so much more than that. I want all individuals to be treated as such, not just women.
well the same goes for a man then. if he can't support a child on his own, he doesn't deserve custody either. like i keep saying, it takes two to make a baby. both parties are equally responsible. i am not going to get rid of protection for children, because some idiots abuse it. the idiots who abuse it, need to be dealt with it. i say this as a having grown up with a mother who worked two and three jobs, because my father refused to take care of us, and my mom refused to go on welfare.
Yeah. Well put. Damn the labels, the intellectual hijackers of opinion. We all exist where you place the holy, in the space between; sometimes we overlap and agree. Its called co-operation and makes the world work - for those out there who don't like to see the obvious. Insisting on this camp or that construct is a form of social violence perpetrated against all those who even attempt to think independantly, whatever their gender, race, colour or creed.
Softball, This IS about THE POET. The "poet" is ALL ABOUT MEN VS. WOMEN! Doesn't matter the specific poem. Have you EVER heard a poet (and I'm talking about an actual poet by profession) spouting anti-woman hatred at ANY TIME in your life? Do you know ANY anti-female poet who has high acclaim? I would LOVE to hear the answer to this one. Yours In Truth, --The Final Justice
@riethc yes, this is poetry. if your looking at content & trying to package her as something you are comfertable with missing the point of what she is about. listen again, its all in there. with respect to the poem "if your not for us, you are against us" ...evedently from your 'Mussilini' comment you seem to have ticked the second box.
I'm a feminist because I want better. I want to be able to walk at night and not be afraid of what a man could do to me. I want to be seen as a human being, not as an object created just for men to enjoy. I want to be able to speak out for myself and my rights not have words like 'slut' or 'bitch' thrown out me. I don't want to be marginalized, seen as 'just a woman' when I'm so much more than that.
i work 12 to 16 hours a day. i have traind men who end up making more than me. i have the highest work load in my department, meaning i do the most work than ANYONE male or female. as such, i think i deserve the same amount of money. if i do a crappy job, fire me, that is reasonable. and i a husband treats a wife like crap, she should divorce him, and vice versa. if women are gonna demand equal treatment, they should accept equal responsibility. i have no problem with that.
I also would like to say that I agree with you when you say feminism in itself is opposed to gender equality. However I don't see this poem as a means of segregation of the sexes or any other form of support for inequality. Thank you for making me reconsider my stance. I urge you to do the same. -DanofDodorpia
It all comes down to proper educating our youth. Its hard to go pass the typical trend, and achieve things, when you meet the impasse of set and un-flexible minds. Yet men are so much more then just "Sexists". I'm all about Equality, and I believe that we are all created equally. Yet I don't think that demonizing a person / sex / idea is the correct way.. We all have our perspectives, but you can't gauge the world, woman, or man so easily as saying Feminism is bad and / or that men are Sexiest.
the studies for today done recently have proven that theory to be flawed..the studies showed that when the women got to where feminist said they should strive to get they would be happier and most were not..they were older, single, and childless and most of the interviewed the whole way to the top or close enough always did it to prepare for motherhood and be happily married but rubbed so many men wrong to the top that none took interest. alot of the women studied just became bitter spinsters.
I am so incredibly mesmerized by these poets who break down a topic and put it in a language we all can understand. Who recognize the debate but don't conform to it.
"I am too many flavors for one spoon"
This crowd is dead. She's amazing.
+Waterlilly995 The only explanation is that she asked to withhold applause in the middle, OR it's being held at ANY university in the United States.
Crowds at poetry slams are actually pretty quiet until the end. Some can get loud in support but that's why people snap. Clapping is loud and the speaker has to wait until they're done so they can be heart

@PerfectWoman2 No offense, but did you drink the chemicals under the kitchen sink when you were a kid or something?
@StellaEllaMaya how do you comment on UA-cam videos, and make my dinner at the same time?
Yeah. Well put.

Yo that was sick!!! she threw it down
@riethc
yes, this is poetry.

with respect to the poem "if your not for us, you are against us" ...evedently from your 'Mussilini' comment you seem to have ticked the second box.
Love it!!!!
Does she differenciate the definition of "womanist" versus "feminist" or are they one in the same in her opinion?
@RIQMUSIC I think it was meant to be a joke ;)
Wow
I'm a feminist because I want better. I want to be able to walk at night and not be afraid of what a man could do to me.
