When I was in school in England, we had elocution lessons. One of the phrases we had to recite was as follows "I had to laugh to see a calf walk a mile and a half to take a bath" sounding the long"A" There were several others we had to use. We also learned public speaking i.e. speaking without using um and or but. If my teacher, Miss Kneal, was here today she would be shocked.

Almost all the formal words you are referring come from the Fernch language ... As far as i'm concerned I tend to speak using an English very formal so instead i try to get used to used phrasal verbs. It's such a big deal!! Thanks to you.

I dare noticing, formal words are romance borrowings - Latin / French. And, more, romance derived verbs, more recent, are regular, whereas older verbs, with Germanic origins, are more often irregular. The English language has such a complex and fascinating history!
