It’s intriguing to think how two arrows determined the course of history, the first being the arrow that slew Harald Sigurdsson, and the second being the arrow that laid low Harold Godwinson. But for that first arrow, the Norse might have prevailed that day against the English, and the Normans would have found themselves facing a very different foe. 1066 was an eventful year, to put it mildly.
As a Scandinavian, but also as a descendant of William the Conqueror, I'd say, that England would have been better off with a Viking victory at Stamford bridge.

I'm definitely in the minority after reading the comments, but he came across as a vicious psychopath whose ruthless ambition caused death and misery for thousands. Harald Hardrada was 2 generations younger. Why is Cnut already king of anything while his father is still alive? Forkbeard was the one who led the invasion of England that was depicted in the show, he was the new king of England, and this happened 10+ years after the massacres of the 1st episode, as opposed to 1 year like in the show. Cnut became king of England after his father died, and only became king of Denmark after his younger brother who inherited that kingdom died a couple of years later. Olaf Haraldsson took Norway after the death of Svein Forkbeard and ruled it for 15 years, as opposed to dying in a duel with a girl while still being a Jarl. He eventually lost the kingdom to a combination of Cnut invading and his nobles rebelling at the same time, and died in battle 2 years later trying to win the kingdom back. A 15 years old Harald Siggurdson (Hardrada) was present at this battle, as mentioned in the video. The massacre in ep 1 happened in 1002. Svein Forkbeard taking England and dying after 5 weeks, making Cnut the Great inherit the throne happened in 1014. The death of Olaf Haraldsson and the beginning of Harald Siggurdson's travels to Rus and The Byzantine Empire happened in 1030.
Lol, probably not though the person in the Norse sagas is like a giant and bulked it wouldn’t make sense to make Leif it unless they want him to make an ultimate sacrifice then I guess.
@Wafflefan340... idk Harold is suppose to be one of the best Berserker Vikings in the world on the show and Leaf is about the same size of him. Not to mention Leafs dad on the show was a legendary berserker Viking and leaf himself went berserker at the end of the first season and wrecked a whole bunch of dudes. They will probably have him use his wits instead of brawn just by judging how the show has played out so far. I can’t wait to see the scene though no matter who it is. It’s my favorite tale. I hate that they stab the guy in the back with spears from under the bridge like come on he’s one guy vs a whole army the least you can do is meet him face to face you cowards lol
In the TV series Vikings/Valhalla, Olaf and Harold are portrayed as enemies vying for power and the kingship of Norway. In this version, they are portrayed as allies with Olaf as kind and Harold as his sworn man. Which source is accurate?
Why do some historians always say that the Battle of Stamford Bridge and death of Harold (Hardrada) Sigurdsson as the "end of the Viking Age"? The other warriors just didn't evaporate. Equally important, many of the Saxons/Danes under Godwinson at Hastings were outfitted and fought like Vikings (Huscarls King's Guards). Finally what about the Norseman kings ruling the Scottish outer/inner Hebrides, Orkneys, and Shetlands still in the 1200s. As in Haakon IV Haakonsson and his daughter "saucy Mary"? Can you explain?
Because if you want to put a definitive date to mark the transition between the Viking Age and the High Middle Ages with its knights and crusades, that's the most logical point. It was the last large scale invasion of England by a Viking king. This is also where the stereotypical knight comes into the picture for real. The Bayeux tapestry is the first recorded use of the couched lance heavy cavalry charge as far as I am aware. While the concept of the knight already existed in France and Germany, the Normans were the ones of perfected it. The abundance of ridiculous victories by outnumbered Norman knights against the Arabs in Sicily and Byzantines in Greece in the decades following 1066, and then during the 1st Crusade, really was the start of a new period. Also, the Hebrides, Orkneys and Shetlands were all part of the Kingdom of Norway during that time, and Håkon Håkonsson was about as much of a viking king as the king of Castille.

the Godwinson royal forces were fatigued and distracted

by attacking in a timely fashion,
soon after Hardrada was defeated by Godwinson
without Hardrada
it's possible that William would have been defeated
and not be the so called progenitor of many english royals to this day.
William is the great grandfather of Henry II,
great great grandfather of Richard the Lion hearted
ancestor to many famed leaders
including Edward III, Henry V
this is not to diminish Hardrada's astonishing career
and
survival in his youthful exile from his norwegian home
one might say that luck is on the side of some, like William the Conqueror
whose grand daughter Mathilda is essentially the founder of the English famed Plantagenet Dynasty
i'll winds foiled Williams first attempt to conquer England
before Hardrada's arrival
and it could have been the other way around,
with Hardrada benefitting from Godwinson being distracted by William s army
and Hardrada eventually marching in to
lLondon to be crowned.
Interesting that Harold Godwinson would soon after die in a similar manner--struck in the eye by an arrow at the Battle of Hastings.

After watching season 2 of Vikings Valhalla I’m 99.9% sure the unnamed Viking on the bridge is going to be leaf Erickson.
Lol, probably not though the person in the Norse sagas is like a giant and bulked it wouldn’t make sense to make Leif it unless they want him to make an ultimate sacrifice then I guess.
If so he’s gonna die a brutal death 😬
@@KingOfWinter agreed lol
okay guys.. it's spelled Leif
not a leaf like a tree
and that show is super fiction, right ?
with just some famous names in history
wow what a warrior
We honor them all in our pagan halls to this very day, SKÅL
Seems like the next seasons of Vikings Valhalla will be interesting.
oh yes black female kings cant wit…..
@@guzelataroach4450 Right? Way to piss on History.
@@guzelataroach4450you are everywhere on Viking videos.
Your videos are Better than Netflix Vikings Valhalla 😂🤣
In the TV series Vikings/Valhalla, Olaf and Harold are portrayed as enemies vying for power and the kingship of Norway. In this version, they are portrayed as allies with Olaf as kind and Harold as his sworn man. Which source is accurate?
Vikings valhalla is historical fiction tv series so you can’t really use it as a source for history 😅
It is called hollywood entertainment. It is not a historical documentary
Decent stuff, thank you.
Isn't it Harald not Harold ?
Very interesting history profile of a warrior.
awesome
thank you
Why do some historians always say that the Battle of Stamford Bridge and death of Harold (Hardrada) Sigurdsson as the "end of the Viking Age"? The other warriors just didn't evaporate. Equally important, many of the Saxons/Danes under Godwinson at Hastings were outfitted and fought like Vikings (Huscarls King's Guards). Finally what about the Norseman kings ruling the Scottish outer/inner Hebrides, Orkneys, and Shetlands still in the 1200s. As in Haakon IV Haakonsson and his daughter "saucy Mary"? Can you explain?
because they don't know ❤
Because if you want to put a definitive date to mark the transition between the Viking Age and the High Middle Ages with its knights and crusades, that's the most logical point.
Harald is my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather ( great x 26! ).

married the grandaughter
of Donald "Old Trojan" Macleod of Berneray,
himself a Jacobite warrior,
and descended from
Sir Roderick Macleod of Macleod (1573-1626),
15th chief of Clan MacLeod,
so I have two routes back to Harald.
So your point about Norse rule
continuing in Scotland's island fringes
is matched by my descent.
Amazing what one learns on UA-cam!

He went out like a "G" !
Warrior till the end
Amazing!!
0:15 he was such a good looking man 😍
Oh wow. I didn't realize that Leo Suter's facial hair was actually Harald Hardrada's according to the first seconds of the video.
Imagine what may have happened if the arrow that killed Harald Hardrada had missed...
Probably would have different dynasty on English throne...
if he had defeated Godwinson,
he would have had to face off with William later known as the Conqueror
who defeated Godwinson months after
Godwinson defeated Hardrada..
so that would be definitely a fascinating what if story!
what an epic battle that would have been !
Hardrada v. William of Normandy , also part Viking blood
if we had a time machine and could change the trajectory of that arrow ...
who would have triumphed and be progenitor of all
English royals today
I'm going to Stamford bridge tomorrow only a few miles from my house can't wait! 😁😁
