I live just north of Crystal Palace and had just planned a cycle route to IKEA Croydon when I saw your video. And…had to stop the video and go update my route! Yours looks nicer!
The potential for cycling in South London is massive - rail links typically go into the centre and the trains aren't frequent enough to make radial journeys very easily, and while the buses are great bikes are typically faster, especially if you need to get multiple busses. I'm speaking from experience of regularly trying to get from Streatham to Lewisham!
Interesting video - broadly my commute. I tend to stick to main roads a bit more (the speed/wiggly/safety balance), but i think its about as good a route as you can get (id also recommend ataying on sydenham road for the lights, rush hour it can be difficult crossing main roads in croydon)
I tend to use Auckland Road rather than the park - it's nice and wide and not too busy. I also stay on Sydenham Road rather than turning into Tavistock, if only to make crossing over St James Road easier as Sydenham Road has traffic lights
Hello! I much appreciated 'discovering' Norwood lake park, a wonderful sight. And, btw I dare to suggest again: Why don't you take us out to the rural surroundings of London? Have no fear, it might be wonderful down there! Not as many biting dogs as you might fear 😉 Thank you!
I live right by the Norwood Lake park. I find it too tight on the narrow paths with pedestrians, so I cycle along Auckland Road. BTW, it appears to be open 24/7 since about 2 years ago. And thanks for the heads-up on Poplar Walk! I didn't realise there was a contra-flow cycle lane. I've so far eded up being stuck the East side of Wellesley Road, and using the pedestrian underpass, which lands you one level too low in the Whitgift shopping arcade. Now, I'll be able to use your route right into the North End paved area.
They’ve improved the cycle route going south out to Purley too. It’s not protected by anything other than a bit of white paint (Tories have already watered down those plans) but it’s at least wider and more visible than a painted bike. Most of the route is meant to be no parking. A shame they haven’t made it a protected Cycle Lane but it’s a step in the right direction.
Amazing video! You should do more videos from/to crystal palace - maybe crystal palace to brixton or something like that. As a local, the hilly end of the A2199 has a really good (partially protected) cycle lane uphill and some cycle lane for downhill as well.
@@Londoncycleroutes Thanks Jon! If you're looking for routes north of CP, then Farquhar Road, Dulwich Wood Avenue might be a starter. There's some shared pavements at the bottom of Dulwich Wood Avenue -- then possibly Alleyn Park (which is very quiet), Hunt Slip Road (past the Dulwich College), and College Rd. After the South Circular, there's a shared pavement on College Rd, which stops just before the picture gallery, then right into Dulwich Park (very nice to cycle round ), and Court Lane, which is part of the Dulwich Village LTN, so you can link to some of your other routes. If you can brave the roundabout in Dulwich Village, at the end of College Rd, then you can go Burbage Road, Turney Road, linking into the route Brixton to Dulwich route.
One id love to see is Waterloo to Norbury - I use the A23 all the way however, its full of wonder and dangers. and the CS7 on A3 is not great either. Maybe Q5 is the best route ?
Could you make a video from West Hampstead to London Bridge? I really want to start cycling to work, but I'm not super confident cycling round central London yet and not sure what the best way to cycle there is :)
Just another question: the last bit of Poplar Walk, where it joins North End: there's no contra-cycle lane, so aren't you cycling contrary to the one way sign (at 11:09) ?
Good spot! I actually hadn’t noticed that as the contra flow gives up abruptly and there wasn’t a no entry sign to indicate it but it looks like you’re right, you seem to be technically supposed to dismount for that section
@@Londoncycleroutes Yes. It seems a bit odd (as is often the case!) that there's a contra-flow cycle lane, that abruptly ends at the car park exit! I guess you can proceed with caution, since that part of the road tends to be used largely by busses.
Yes there’s no signage here which makes it pretty dangerous, I usually mount the pavement early as buses tend to turn fast round the corner rightfully expecting no oncoming traffic!
Another great video! From today's rides, a couple more suggestions from me: Wandsworth (or somewhere Central) to Kingston via C30, and Twickenham to Hammersmith via C40 and C9. (C40 is great, though might be worth waiting until C9 is done through Brentford; part of it is already done but is waiting for lighting installation before formal opening.) Also, do you have any idea of the best route avoiding Kensington High Street right now? I really struggle to work out if there's any routes at all via the back streets that are even remotely doable, even with a bit of walking, especially at night.
@@Londoncycleroutes Yes! For someone, who makes it a point to mention EPL stadiums, you should have. It is not as if it is the stadium that must not be named. ( Tottenham Hotspurs ) P.S: To all the Spurs fans, it is just a lighthearted joke.
Great to see this video. Sadly Croydon Council just removed a wands & bases cycle lane in South Croydon ☹
Really disappointing to see it go backwards 😫

Brilliant, did you cycle in the end? If so how did it go?!

Definitely agree! An east-west route would be super useful
Totally agree - much more vision and ambition needed for the outer boroughs!

That sounds like smart advice on crossing the road at Sydenham Road! Thanks for watching
thanks for highlighting this area
Thanks for watching!
🤙🏼 *My only negative is wishin you uploaded more often* 😂🤙🏼
I like routes with a lot of GREEN!
Maybe one day I’ll be able to move to a second upload a week!
@@Londoncycleroutes maybe somethin slightly different in between these awesome videos
Great to see some cycle routes in south London 👍
Thanks for watching, trying to go properly south a bit more!

Interesting, someone else local in the comments says they avoid the park as well
Good video! i hope the south of London can upgrade their cycling infrastructure in the near future!
Yes there’s a way to go but hopefully it’ll keep getting better! Cheers for tuning in
Great video. Thanks for sharing. 🥰🇬🇧🥰
and thanks for watching!
You should do a cycle route from one end of Greater London to the other. Just for fun :)
That would be fun, I think I should be brushing the Northern end of it in a video quite soon!
@@Londoncycleroutes Excited for that!

This is really useful info - I did wonder, 5pm looked like such an early listed closing time, especially for summer
