It's baffling to me that an Anderson Paak/Bruno Mars collab continues to blow my mind a year on from its release. Didn't know that the drummer from the Dap-Kings was involved, that's amazing!
I'm so happy Em Beihold got a proper spot on this list! That would have been my number one, I absolutely love that song. It also makes me smile seeing you get so excited talking about your favorite country music. It's really obvious you enjoy it, which is a welcome change from most critics that usually don't give it the attention it deserves, when there really were some standouts this year. Not surprised or upset at all that country took up the bulk of this best list. Finally, those shoutouts to Dawn FM were well appreciated. Out of Time and Moth to a Flame not becoming massive hits in America is a crime. I had those two on repeat all year.

I finally agree with a #1 on all these year-end lists. 'Smokin Out The Window' is a classic. The lyrics still make me break out laughing. 'Love's Train' and 'After Last Night', both released as singles, never made the Hot 100, but are still enjoying long runs on the R & B charts. I listen to that album at least once a week. It is so well done.
I always love these year-end vids. I had both “Heads Carolina, Tails California” and “She Had Me at Heads Carolina” on my top Spotify songs of the year. Glad it made your list
me tooooo. She Had Me At Heads Carolina is #2 on my top spotify songs of the year!!! (#1 is "All You Wanted" by Michelle Branch which I always played in the early this year.)
My best list- Honorable Mentions: Numb Little Bug, Late Night Talking, Smokin Out The Window, Easy On Me, Oh My God, Break My Soul, Heat Waves (made my list last year) 10. That’s What I Want 9. About Damn Time 8. Titi Me Pregunto 7. Glimpse of Us 6. As It Was 5. Running Up That Hill 4. Something In The Orange 3. All Too Well 2. Bad Habit 1. Meet Me At Our Spot (live)
Mark has said that most UA-cam critics ignore country music so it makes sense. I'm guilty of this too. I'm mostly indifferent on country music and would rather listen to pop, hip-hop, and whatever rock music is left. Maybe I'll change that and check the country songs on this list?
Personally one of my favorite country albums this year was Hailey Whitter’s Raised Album. Just gave me such a nostalgic vibes back to the late 90’s early 2000’s country that I was raised on.
10 - break my soul 9 - abcdefu 8 - sand in my boots 7 - enemy 6 - numb little bug 5 - rock and a hard place 4 - never say never 3 - better days 2- heat waves 1 - you proof
Got to see Cole Swindell in concert this year so She Had Me At Heads Carolina held a really special place in my heart. Loved the song and loved it even more after the concert!
The style and sound of "5 Foot 9", especially in comparison to the fakeness of the bro country genre of Florida Georgia Line's other work, is why I love it
I also forgot to mentioned "The One" comments regularly on Billboard BREAKDOWN, we really don't want this troll here, it'll be easier for all of us if he's gone
My top 10 would be: 10. Til' You Can't - Cody Johnson 9. Numb Little Bug - Em Beihold 8. Something In The Orange - Zach Bryan 7. As It Was - Harry Styles 6. Bad Habit - Steve Lacy 5. She Had Me At Heads Carolina - Cole Swindell 4. That's What I Want - Lil Nas X 3. Smokin Out The Window - Silk Sonic 2. Sand In My Boots - Morgan Wallen 1. All Too Well (10 Minute Version) - Taylor Swift Honourable Mentions: Glimpse Of Us - Joji Easy On Me - Adele Doin' This - Luke Combs Break My Soul - Beyonce Meet Me At Our Spot - THE ANXIETY What Happened To Virgil - Lil Durk ft. Gunna Buy Dirt - Jordan Davis, Luke Bryan
Hey Mark I hope you see this comment: There's a user who goes by the name "The One", he's a troll, but the things he says are far worse than any troll I've seen, from disrespecting celebrities who've passed, to saying disgusting things to people here and just being a gross person in general, if you can remove him so we don't have to deal with him anymore that would be great, we've had enough of him.
1. Not to forget he is putting hate speech and says an n-word and f-slur in your Billboard Breakdown videos 2. Don't forget to block Jack Donahue and meehan thaj as well, we need to get rid of these toxic trolls for the safety of our community.
What annoys me is that non-American people have negative opinions on country music without even being interested in it! As a French person, i learned to love country music! Not all country songs in the top 100 sound the same and this year country has been good! Last year, when country music was bad in general, people in the comments said "yes, yes country music sucks, you're right to put it on the worst list". This year, country music has been good and we have comments like "why is there a lot of country music? I don't understand why you put them on the best list"! There is no objectivity in what I read! If we had said "I don't like rap", a lot of people would have said it's racism! So, we must not reject musical genres! They all bring something special!
I absolutely agree with you. As a Russian, I'd much rather listen to country music than to whatever a lot of Russian people around me tend to listen to. I'm not talking about the specific genres they listen to, they just stick to what I find to be the least appealing music possible, whereas I've grown to like a decent amount of country music ever since I started following the Billboard charts in the late 2017.
@@shocksystem8675 I also started listening to country music from 2017 and when i say that i listen to country to people around me and i make them listen to these songs, they say "that's country music ?" There are two types of people who don't listen to country, those who don't really care about it and those who have no idea how it sounds because they just listened to Cotton Eye Joe!

Phenomenal list you made here Mark! Truly some of these picks are great and that #1 is indeed a perfect choice. Thank you for the lists and for everything you did for us in 2022! 😁
The Canadian Charts are indeed better, Dawn FM got robbed big time in the US... As for the list itself, so happy to see Numb Little Bug on there, Em is a very solid artist, I liked her EP a lot and NLB was on my rotation all year, in my list it will be #3. Great list overall, really enjoyed it!
my personal best list HMS: NEIKED, Mae Muller, & Polo G - Better Days Adele - Easy On Me Zach Bryan - Something In The Orange Chris Stapleton - You Should Probably Leave Tate McRae - she’s all i wanna be Beyonce - BREAK MY SOUL Lil Nas X - THAT'S WHAT I WANT 10. Nicky Youre f/Dazy - Sunroof (sue me) 9. Lil Durk f/ Gunna - What Happened To Virgil 8. Joji - Glimpse Of Us 7. Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) 6. Harry Styles - As It Was 5. Cody Johnson - ‘Til You Can’t 4. Morgan Wallen - Sand In My Boots 3. Taylor Swift - All Too Well (Taylor’s Version) 2. THE ANXIETY - Meet Me At Our Spot 1. Justin Bieber - Ghost (this was my #1 for very personal reasons that I'd prefer not to detail here) again, ik my taste isn't very good lol
My list 1. Golden Hour by JVKE - Has one of the most breathtakingly beautiful choruses I've ever heard ] 2, Something In The Orange by Zach Bryan - Angsty country music that sounds like the last thing that would ever chart on the hot 100. But we somehow got it 3. Star Walkin by Lil Nas X- Basically a better industry baby. An "I want" song in which Lil Nas X describes himself like he's the protagonist of an anime, ready to defeat all of his demons and all the people who stand in his way. It's actually a pretty interesting evolution of the trap genre. And the piano solo at the end of the song is pretty cool too 4. About Damn Time by Lizzo - It wasn't the number one song of 2022 but if any track released this year feels like a definitave part of 2022, it's this one 5. Out Of Time by The Weeknd - Mainly for the melody and the haunting sound of the instrumental 6. Sunroof by Nicky Youre and DZY- I generally don't like indie pop music but this is actually good 7. Never Say Never by Cole Swindell and Lainey Wilson - I don't know, there's something about country songs that try to go for an "intense/dramatic" kind of vibe that really appeal to me. And the guitar solo is good too 8. Bam Bam by Camila Cabello ft. Ed Sheeran - Hearing a song about suffering through horrible misery and finally making it out and dancing to celebrate is pretty cathartic. Although I hate how there's a moment in the song that feels like the beginning of a trumpet solo that never happened. Also, the album that comes from was surprisingly good 9. What Else Can I Do - From Encanto - The "free hugs" adlib almost completly ruins this song for me but aside from that, it's a really good empowerment anthem. 10. Like I Love Country Music by Kane Brown - The fact that a song with two giant instrumental solos made it onto the hot 100 is amazing Honorable Mentions - Music For A Sushi Resturaunt by Harry Styles - I think it's pretty weird that he made a song that sounds like something that would be released in 2015 to cash in on the success of Uptown Funk but the novelty of hearing an Uptown Funk type song in 2022 was pretty cool - Thousand Miles by The Kid Laroi - The last chorus of this song in which the instrumental changes to a piano is shockingly beautiful. If the entire song was like that, this could have been number 1 - Stay Alive by Jungkook - Would have been number 2 if it charted for more then a week. - Despudes De La Playa by Bad Bunny- If the first half of this song was as good as the second half, this would be very high on my list - I Really Want To Stay At Your House by Let's Eat Grandma - If this charted at all, it would be very high up on my list.
My top 10: 10. Better Days 9. Late Night Talking 8. Oh My God 7. I Ain’t Worried 6. Smokin Out The Window 5. That’s What I Want 4. Bad Habit 3. Doin’ This 2. You Should Probably Leave 1. Something in the Orange
Our number 1 picks for the best hit song of 2022 are one and the same this year and that makes me very happy in spite of 2022 being very forgettable to me.

Thanks for the list! Been looking forward to both this and the worst hits list for a while now. NGL, your videos here and on Billboard Breakdown really helped me get into mainstream pop music this year, so these lists feel like a culmination of all that for me. I've always been mildly curious about pop music and hovered around the edges of it for a while, mainly by way of channels like Todd in the Shadows. However, in practice, I've mostly stuck to my niche interests in anime/J-pop tracks, synthwave, and obscure Bandcamp oddities. It got bad enough at a point that I took a course on the history of popular music several years ago just because I felt my knowledge of mainstream music was that poor. Early this year, though, I decided I was sick of barely knowing what people were talking about whenever pop music came up. To rectify this, I made a project out of following the Billboard Hot 100 for the rest of the year. I know it's not fully representative of what is "actually" popular (whatever that means in this decentralized music era), but it seemed like an easy, consistent reference point to anchor my listening to nonetheless. Billboard Breakdown was invaluable in helping me navigate the weekly charts. It helped me get to know what to expect from various artists, gauge the general "arc" of the year in music, and develop my tastes more along the way. Some of my tastes and opinions ended up matching with yours (I am also now in the Em Beihold Fan Club) and some didn't (I AM raising an eyebrow at "5 Foot 9", though I won't begrudge you for it). Regardless, it's always been clear that you're an experienced music critic who is confident and principled in their critiques, and I appreciate that. Thanks for everything you do, Mark. Looking forward to hearing more from you in 2023. If you or anyone else is curious, here are my personal best and worst lists at the conclusion of this experiment for 2022: BEST 1) "Numb Little Bug" by Em Beihold 2) "Glimpse of Us" by Joji 3) "About Damn Time" by Lizzo 4) "As It Was" by Harry Styles 5) "Bam Bam" by Camila Cabello feat. @@mike04574 true. I kept it off the list proper because it felt like cheating to put a 1985 song on a 2022 list, but it was eligible, so I figured it deserved a mention. The same could be said for "All Too Well (Taylor's Version)", which had an original version released in 2012.

My best list this time was actually really hard to make. Around half the Year-End ended up being good for me. Had to make some painful cuts even in the honorable mentions. With that being said I once again took out the Christmas songs and repeats from last year and replaced them with the ones right under. Also I’m not counting Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush and All Too Well by Taylor Swift because it would be too obvious. They would be #2 and #1 respectively if I counted them. 10. No Love (Remix) - Summer Walker, SZA & Cardi B 9. About Damn Time - Lizzo 8. Woman - Doja Cat 7. Damn Strait - Scotty McCreery 6. Super Freaky Girl - Nicki Minaj 5. Absolutely agreed that Dawn FM should've been bigger here in the US instead of the Encanto soundtrack, in which I think every song from it is awful. Probably wasn't because the music from Dawn FM is too good. Therefore, radio can't play it.
Delighted to see 'Smokin Out The Window' as the best hit song of the year, even if it was to be expected! Glad to see 'Running Up That Hill' in the Top 5! That becoming as big as it did was such a huge cultural phenomenon in 2022. :) I absolutely agree with you that Em Beihold deserves more mainstream attention! My highlight though is 'All Too Well (Taylor's Version)' among the honourable mentions. Good list as ever, Mark! 😊

It's worn out its welcome a bit lately) -Snap - Cuff It - Vegas Non charting songs that should have been hits - Bite Me (Avril's best single in years yet the pop punk boom sputtered out...ugh) - Head On Fire (Griff and Sigrid team up for a pretty great little pop song) - Whiskey Sours (Kane Brown, this beautiful ballad was RIGHT THERE, you could have made it a single instead of Grand) - Complete Mess (5SOS deserved better in 2022) - Twin (I got addicted to this song from Hatchie, would have loved to see it be a sustainable hit)

My Predictions/Confirmations for Mark's Best List: *Something In The Orange *Damn Strait *Easy On Me *She Had Me At Heads Carolina *You Should Probably Leave (Confirmed due to the thumbnail) *Smokin Out The Window *THAT'S WHAT I WANT *Get Into It (Yuh) (confirmed due to the thumbnail) *Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) (confirmed by a livestream Mark did) *Numb Little Bug (confirmed due to the thumbnail) *Glimpse of Us *Fall In Love *Doin This *About Damn Time *All Too Well (TV) *One Mississippi *ABCDEFU Also, I'm assuming Out of Time might be a Canadian extra?
If Mark is gonna mention the best songs that made the 2022 Canadian Hot 100 Year End "Out Of Time" will likely make it along with "Last Last" and probably "Edamame".

Hm: Get into it (yuh) Thousand Miles Better Days What Happened to Virgil Broadway girls (ik ik) 10. Nail Tech 9. Sand in my boots 8. Fall in Love 7. She Had me at heads Carolina 6. She's all i want to be 5. Anti-Hero 4. psychofreak 3. Something in the Orange 2. The heart part 5 1. Umm Hmm Agree with Mark that this was a weird year for “good” pop music. Basically everything was fine? There were like 25 songs I really liked but like, but none as much as songs from last year. There were like half a dozen songs from 2021 that would have been my favorite, and the only 2 songs I actually loved (the heart part 5 and umm hmm) were barely hits. Bunch of minor hits on here lol. This list kinda sucks beyond my top 3, and I'm mostly posting it in the comments so I have a document for my bad opinions.
I hope Bad Habit (singular) is on here. One of the few great songs tiktok has catapulted up the charts this decade so far. Damn not even an HM? I think Bad Habit slaps but sure
I was a little disappointed by the song selections in Stranger Things season 3, so was happy when I heard Running Up That Hill in the first episode of season 4. At the time I had no idea how important to the story the song would end up being or how it's use in the show would cause it to explode in popularity, but it was pretty awesome to watch it all unfold.
My #1 hit song of the year was “Til You Can’t” by Cody Johnson, and mostly for personal reasons. The warm, inviting instrumentation welcomed me in every time, and Cody Johnson is a great singer who can really sell what he’s singing. I’ll be real, though - this song mostly hit so hard because my grandpa passed on Father’s Day this year. Losing him really impacted me in a big way, and “Til You Can’t” hit like a truck after that, but in a good way. It also fits that the song was the exact kind of country music my grandpa always used to listen to. This was a banner year for country, if nothing else, but “Til You Can’t” is my pick for the best hit of the year.
Am I the only one who doesn't like Titi Me Pregunto? I actually think that's the worst track on Bad Bunny's album, even worse than Despues De La Playa. I'm happy to see She Had Me At Heads Carolina, that's one of my favorite country songs to ever get big this year. I'm also happy to see Fall In Love on there, that's another favorite of mine. Lastly, people calling Running Up That Hill one of the best hits of this year is massively unfair since it isn't technically a 2022 hit and it has a completely different sound to the rest of the hits so comparing those to this song is like comparing Hey Jude by The Beatles to say Hips Don't Lie by Shakira, they are completely different songs from different eras.
I didn't like "Titi Me Pregunto" at first and still don't think it's one of the best songs from Bad Bunny's album but I also think it's fine. I wouldn't say the same for "She Had Me At Heads Carolina" which to me is passable at best and is probably the most overrated country song of the year. Also, "Fall In Love" has improved my stance towards Bailey Zimmerman and makes me believe that he has the potential to make a good song in the future.

Does Mark speak Spanish? His criticism of various Spanish hits seems to come from a place of properly understanding the source material. Anyway great list!!
I was gonna make a joke comment about Damn Strait that was like "A song about having a song be ruined for you? Did someone make a song about my relationship with Heat Waves?" or some other song that was ruined by overplay when I realize I don't want to make my second or third to last comment about Heat Waves. But I instead want to talk about my love for the concept about this song. A song being hard to listen to thanks to an unpleasant experience is real. Yeah, there's the joke answer of overplay. But they are indeed those moments when a song gets played in the background because of a depressing situation, and that song gets hard to stomach in listens after that event. And I'm so happy there's a song about that kind of experience. Damn Strait isn't my pick for the best song on the Year-End, but it is the one I'm the most happy that it is exists.

It's funny seeing this list coming from a country that American Country Music has basically no appeal, I never heard half of the list
There's two halfs of Running Up That Hills' chart run. The "You ever had that moment when you watch someting and go, "Wow, this song I never heard of before is good. This is going right in the playlist?" Well imagine if millions of people had the same moment as you." half. And the "You know, this makes for good radio filler." half. No, I didn't count its original chart run as part of this.
Great list and presentation as always, even in a discussion as subjective as this that can potentially come with disagreements, you always seem to articulately justify why certain songs deserve certain praise or otherwise But are we gonna gloss over the fact that Mark actually hit a few dancefloors this year? 33:27
There were so many country songs that felt best list worthy this year, including a bunch that didn’t even make Mark’s list Rock And A Hard Place, Never Say Never, Flower Shops, One Mississippi, Like I Love Country Music, and Circles Around This Town just to name a few Really strong year for the genre as a whole
I agreed with your opinion that 2022 is great for country music, but Rock And A Hard Place, One Mississippi and Circles Around This Town are just decent in my opinion. There are some much better songs like She Had Me At Heads Carolina, Damn Strait and Something In The Orange. Personally Buy Dirt is 5/5. This song is underrated.
My thoughts: HM1. This is a grower. HM2. Aight. HM3. It's no Sun Goes Down, but it's still insanely good! HM4. Really good. HM5. This song slaps. HM6. W. This song is really good. HM7. Alright. 10. Pretty cool. 9. Great. Zimmerman has a lot of potential. 8. I ADORE THIS SONG!!!!!! 7. Decent. 6. The Driver's License of 2022. In that it's good, but I don't get why so many people are head over heels in love with it. Burn Burn Burn is better in my opinion. 5. Decent. 4. It's good, but nothing more. 3. This song is awesome. 2. THE HELL?! This song is boring sludge!!!!! CH (Canadian Hit)1. Great. CH2. Great. CH3. Cool. CH4. No, this song is terrible. CH5. A bop. CH6. Cool. 1. W. This song is incredible!
"Pop punk faded a bit" I mean, it is radio's fault that they decided to ignore Avril's comeback and instead play Tate McRae, Leah Kate, Jax and the other knockoff hits that never really took off. Glad to see Get Into It (Yuh) and All Too Well be among the list.
Country must have really stepped it up in comparison to last year. I'm surprised to not see As It Was, About Damn Time, Break My Soul, Bad Habit, or Essence on his list. I don't really listen to country so I've never heard of most of these.
@@juliekeast6175 yes he was, but I figured they would grow on him. I love Break My Soul and About Damn Time. But I'd rather listen to Blinding Lights over As it Was (since both songs sample Take On Me by a-ha.) Not saying As It Was is awful. Just don't like it as much as the first two songs.
Heres my gen z top 10 Bad Habit Puffin on Zooties Break my soul Running up that hill Titi me pregunto Industry Baby Easy on me Glimpse of us Smoking out le window Super freaky girl
Can someone explain to me how "That's What I Want" is a "pop rock" song? I hear the pop but I don't hear any rock. Are you defining pop rock as "any pop song with any kind of guitar in it at all?"
My only disagreement with this list would be you placing Cole Swindell above Scotty McCreery, primarily because Scotty does more justice to the neotraditional country sound that he is paying homage to. But, I guess I get your reasoning behind #2 anyways.
I admit, some of your picks on this list did surprise me a little, though the prevalence of country music this year certainly makes a number of them less so. I admit, I also kind of liked 'Sand In My Boots', and am extremely embarrassed to admit such for the same reason I'm ashamed to admitting to liking 'Forever' by Chris Brown...or a large number of Guns 'n' Roses songs for that matter. Admittedly, yeah; 'Sand In My Boots' basically lifting its melody wholesale from Zac Brown Band's 'Colder Weather' was definitely part of the reason why I liked it; that's a great melody. For me personally, some of my preferred songs were the ones about how crap things are and how much life sucks right now and a longing for better days. Not sure about a specific order for them, but ones I enjoyed personally were as follows: 'Glimpse of Us' by Joji, 'One Right Now' by Post Malone and the Weeknd, 'Numb Little Bug' by Em Beihold, 'Better Days' by NEIKED, Mae Miller and Polo G, 'Smokin' Out the Window' by Silk Sonic, 'Something In the Orange' by Zach Bryan, 'Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)' by Kate Bush, 'You Should Probably Leave' by Chris Stapleton, 'Bam Bam' by Camila Cabello ft. Ed Sheeran, 'That's What I Want' by Lil Nas X...guess I'll include 'Sand In My Boots' by Morgan Wallen...
I said before that according to Billboard Gods, once a country singer has a Year-End hit, they have to have another one. So when do you people think we'll Zack Bryan's second hit?
@@Imnotspecial0.0 If Walker Hayes had to unfortunately have a second hit because of that Billboard rule, we should be glad it was this year because it means we got it over right away and we never have to see him again. Same thing goes with Parmalee.
Legit shocked that Damn Strait isn't #1, but I also understand why bc damn Smokin Out The Window is such an awesome track! While Put On A Smile is my personal favorite of that album, it's still excellent and more than worthy of that spot!
It's baffling to me that an Anderson Paak/Bruno Mars collab continues to blow my mind a year on from its release. Didn't know that the drummer from the Dap-Kings was involved, that's amazing!
So Cole Swindell went from making Voltorb force Mark to put out a review to placing at #2 on his Best list. Truly an impossible comeback.
He's the Zac Brown Band in reverse.
And if You Should Be Here hadn't come up just short in 2016, I'm sure it would've been pretty high on his list that year.

I’m so glad “Numb Little Bug” is finally getting the love it deserves.
My best list-
Honorable Mentions: Numb Little Bug, Late Night Talking, Smokin Out The Window, Easy On Me, Oh My God, Break My Soul, Heat Waves (made my list last year)
10. That’s What I Want
9. About Damn Time

5. Running Up That Hill
4. Something In The Orange

2. Bad Habit
1. Meet Me At Our Spot (live)
I haven't seen "Damn Strait" on a lot of best lists, but I agree it's fantastic! One of my favourite hits of the year, too!
Agreed!!!
10 - break my soul
9 - abcdefu
8 - sand in my boots
7 - enemy
6 - numb little bug

Got to see Cole Swindell in concert this year so She Had Me At Heads Carolina held a really special place in my heart. Loved the song and loved it even more after the concert!
Wish I could have been to😭 I love Cole Swindell
The style and sound of "5 Foot 9", especially in comparison to the fakeness of the bro country genre of Florida Georgia Line's other work, is why I love it
That's why I wanted FGL to make more songs like "Simple", "Dirt" or "Blessings".
It is better than FGL but his voice is still...eh to me
I also forgot to mentioned "The One" comments regularly on Billboard BREAKDOWN, we really don't want this troll here, it'll be easier for all of us if he's gone
6:05 I see what you did there
My top 10 would be:
10. Til' You Can't - Cody Johnson
9. Numb Little Bug - Em Beihold
8. Something In The Orange - Zach Bryan

Mark please take action in this, I know we deal this before with Youngbassking, we can do it again this time and we can do better.
1. Not to forget he is putting hate speech and says an n-word and f-slur in your Billboard Breakdown videos
@@shocksystem8675 I also started listening to country music from 2017 and when i say that i listen to country to people around me and i make them listen to these songs, they say "that's country music ?"
There are two types of people who don't listen to country, those who don't really care about it and those who have no idea how it sounds because they just listened to Cotton Eye Joe!

9. Lil Durk f/ Gunna - What Happened To Virgil
8. Joji - Glimpse Of Us
7. Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)
6. Harry Styles - As It Was
5. Cody Johnson - ‘Til You Can’t
4. Morgan Wallen - Sand In My Boots
3. Taylor Swift - All Too Well (Taylor’s Version)
2. THE ANXIETY - Meet Me At Our Spot
1. Justin Bieber - Ghost (this was my #1 for very personal reasons that I'd prefer not to detail here)
again, ik my taste isn't very good lol
I like your list. There's no disagreement.
My list
1. Golden Hour by JVKE - Has one of the most breathtakingly beautiful choruses I've ever heard ]
2, Something In The Orange by Zach Bryan - Angsty country music that sounds like the last thing that would ever chart on the hot 100. But we somehow got it
3. And the piano solo at the end of the song is pretty cool too
4. About Damn Time by Lizzo - It wasn't the number one song of 2022 but if any track released this year feels like a definitave part of 2022, it's this one
5. Out Of Time by The Weeknd - Mainly for the melody and the haunting sound of the instrumental
6. Sunroof by Nicky Youre and DZY- I generally don't like indie pop music but this is actually good
7. Never Say Never by Cole Swindell and Lainey Wilson - I don't know, there's something about country songs that try to go for an "intense/dramatic" kind of vibe that really appeal to me. And the guitar solo is good too
8. Also, the album that comes from was surprisingly good
9. What Else Can I Do - From Encanto - The "free hugs" adlib almost completly ruins this song for me but aside from that, it's a really good empowerment anthem.
10. Like I Love Country Music by Kane Brown - The fact that a song with two giant instrumental solos made it onto the hot 100 is amazing
Honorable Mentions
- Music For A Sushi Resturaunt by Harry Styles - I think it's pretty weird that he made a song that sounds like something that would be released in 2015 to cash in on the success of Uptown Funk but the novelty of hearing an Uptown Funk type song in 2022 was pretty cool
- Thousand Miles by The Kid Laroi - The last chorus of this song in which the instrumental changes to a piano is shockingly beautiful. If the entire song was like that, this could have been number 1
- Stay Alive by Jungkook - Would have been number 2 if it charted for more then a week.
- Despudes De La Playa by Bad Bunny- If the first half of this song was as good as the second half, this would be very high on my list
- I Really Want To Stay At Your House by Let's Eat Grandma - If this charted at all, it would be very high up on my list.
My top 10:
10. Better Days
9. Late Night Talking

Nice to see love for "Better Days"
Seeing Em Beihold in the thumbnail brightens my day!
Broadway Girls > Any and All disgusting country song of 2022
I came here to comment just that
I feel like NLB is kind of a shoe-in for this list in spite of the overplay
My only criticism is that it's too short!
Our number 1 picks for the best hit song of 2022 are one and the same this year and that makes me very happy in spite of 2022 being very forgettable to me.

Let's go!!! The best list is about come
Thanks for the list!
If you or anyone else is curious, here are my personal best and worst lists at the conclusion of this experiment for 2022:

Kate bush is 80s
@@mike04574 true. I kept it off the list proper because it felt like cheating to put a 1985 song on a 2022 list, but it was eligible, so I figured it deserved a mention. The same could be said for "All Too Well (Taylor's Version)", which had an original version released in 2012.
Em Beihold's album was great and definitely reminds me of Sara Bareilles. I hope she continues to get more attention from radio

Out of Time would've been AT LEAST #4 for me had it qualified. It along with its predecessor tragically came up short.

I absolutely agree with you that Em Beihold deserves more mainstream attention!
My highlight though is 'All Too Well (Taylor's Version)' among the honourable mentions.

Agree with Mark that this was a weird year for “good” pop music.

Great video, Mark! Excited about the best songs and best albums!
I think it's alright, not great
I didn't like "Titi Me Pregunto" at first and still don't think it's one of the best songs from Bad Bunny's album but I also think it's fine. I wouldn't say the same for "She Had Me At Heads Carolina" which to me is passable at best and is probably the most overrated country song of the year. Also, "Fall In Love" has improved my stance towards Bailey Zimmerman and makes me believe that he has the potential to make a good song in the future.
I still dont agree with Despues De La Playa hate
@@xamp_exclammark Me neither
You're not alone in your opinion on Titi Me Pregunto. I don't like that song either at all

Does Mark speak Spanish? His criticism of various Spanish hits seems to come from a place of properly understanding the source material. Anyway great list!!
Great video, I like these songs too. As for amount of country...well you got me into the genre so our tastes are pretty similar
Despite the fact I only know 3 of the top 10 songs on your list (we have very different taste), I always respect and enjoy your opinons! Great List!
Great list and presentation as always, even in a discussion as subjective as this that can potentially come with disagreements, you always seem to articulately justify why certain songs deserve certain praise or otherwise
But are we gonna gloss over the fact that Mark actually hit a few dancefloors this year? 33:27
There were so many country songs that felt best list worthy this year, including a bunch that didn’t even make Mark’s list
Rock And A Hard Place, Never Say Never, Flower Shops, One Mississippi, Like I Love Country Music, and Circles Around This Town just to name a few
Really strong year for the genre as a whole
Never Say Never is terrible.
@@jeremyusreevu237 You really hate Cole Swindell lol
I agreed with your opinion that 2022 is great for country music, but Rock And A Hard Place, One Mississippi and Circles Around This Town are just decent in my opinion. There are some much better songs like She Had Me At Heads Carolina, Damn Strait and Something In The Orange. Personally Buy Dirt is 5/5. This song is underrated.
@@yngmusic those songs are great too, I was just listing the ones that didn’t make Mark’s list
@@Tom-kq3ng Oh I see.
The Weeknd and Kate Bush for me plus Beyoncé

My thoughts:
HM1. This is a grower.
HM2. Aight.
HM3. It's no Sun Goes Down, but it's still insanely good!
HM4. Really good.
HM5. This song slaps.
HM6. W. This song is really good.
HM7. Alright.
10. Pretty cool.
9. Great. Zimmerman has a lot of potential.
8. I ADORE THIS SONG!!!!!!
7. Decent.
6. The Driver's License of 2022. In that it's good, but I don't get why so many people are head over heels in love with it. Burn Burn Burn is better in my opinion.
5. Decent.
4. It's good, but nothing more.
3. This song is awesome.
2. THE HELL?! This song is boring sludge!!!!!
CH (Canadian Hit)1. Great.

@@Jollyjose251 Quiet, you.
"Pop punk faded a bit"
I mean, it is radio's fault that they decided to ignore Avril's comeback and instead play Tate McRae, Leah Kate, Jax and the other knockoff hits that never really took off.
Glad to see Get Into It (Yuh) and All Too Well be among the list.
I'm fine with Tate but the other two...
I know. They play Sk8er Boi to death but ignore the very radio friendly Bite Me infuriated me in late 2021 and 2022.
2:59 - How is Titi Mi Pregunto "trap?" Just because Bad Bunny made trap music before, doesn't mean that this isn't a reggaeton song
Country must have really stepped it up in comparison to last year. I'm surprised to not see As It Was, About Damn Time, Break My Soul, Bad Habit, or Essence on his list. I don't really listen to country so I've never heard of most of these.
Country music never stepped it up nore down throughout its entire existence, it’s always been the same godawful genre throughout time
He was only ever lukewarm on As It Was, Break My Soul and About Samn Time.
@@Jollyjose251 waa tiny head not open to other genres
@@juliekeast6175 yes he was, but I figured they would grow on him. I love Break My Soul and About Damn Time. But I'd rather listen to Blinding Lights over As it Was (since both songs sample Take On Me by a-ha.) Not saying As It Was is awful. Just don't like it as much as the first two songs.

Burna Boy alone was enough for me to love this video.
Can someone explain to me how "That's What I Want" is a "pop rock" song? I hear the pop but I don't hear any rock. Are you defining pop rock as "any pop song with any kind of guitar in it at all?"
Did I miss something where no one’s waiting till January this year?
Not sure about a specific order for them, but ones I enjoyed personally were as follows:
'Glimpse of Us' by Joji, 'One Right Now' by Post Malone and the Weeknd, 'Numb Little Bug' by Em Beihold, 'Better Days' by NEIKED, Mae Miller and Polo G, 'Smokin' Out the Window' by Silk Sonic, 'Something In the Orange' by Zach Bryan, 'Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)' by Kate Bush, 'You Should Probably Leave' by Chris Stapleton, 'Bam Bam' by Camila Cabello ft.
He has a new album coming next year so possibly 2023?
I will be pissed if he doesn’t, we literally give Walker Hayes a second hit for no reason, why can’t we give it to the way better artist.
@@Imnotspecial0.0 If Walker Hayes had to unfortunately have a second hit because of that Billboard rule, we should be glad it was this year because it means we got it over right away and we never have to see him again. Same thing goes with Parmalee.
Any list that ends with Silk Sonic on top is alright by me
finally someone who likes titi me pregunto here
Legit shocked that Damn Strait isn't #1, but I also understand why bc damn Smokin Out The Window is such an awesome track! While Put On A Smile is my personal favorite of that album, it's still excellent and more than worthy of that spot!
