I think that the reason why there isn't much explanations about the charachters relationship is because everyone in Brasil grew up hearing those storys, so it's natural for us to see them in that way
We apreciated the series because it portrays our culture, our legends, our children tales in a realistic way, so I think we were more impressed than non-brazilians. It appeals to our childhood. I remember spending hours reading about these tales on school, specially when I was just learning to read. There's a lot of references that all brazilian will get easily, but other people will have to do a lot of research to understand. Thanks for your review!
It's nice to hear you guys really appreciating your own! There are times that I want the show to give me context as to what's happening (like why do they keep on taking Saci's hat) but I figured Brazilians know already their stuff that adding expositions will make it less subtle. It's fun researching these tales online though!
@@ScreenKings I don´t know if you already research about the saci hat, but the legend says that if you can steal de saci hat, you can ask to saci do something for you, and he´ll obey to get is hat back.
Actually, knowing the legends in the show turns it into a very cool thing to see, because you see some relations that are very well explored, I just hope we see a Mapinguari, a Boitatá and a werewolf (I guess they didnt put the werewolf because is one of the more international characters) in season 2
People that know the legends are extremelly excited! We keep going like "how is he going to ride the whirlwind? oh dude. awesome" or that Curupira dude, his acting was so different from other media, he was awesome doing it! We gobbled up this series. it's awesome
I would've wanted an episode dedicated to Saci and Curupira. Learn more about their foster father/child relationship. It's nice to see you guys enjoyed this series as much as I did. :)
@@ScreenKings I don't know if they will though, because the legends don't make it clear. They might not do that, but I agree with you: it would be interesting!
Here in Brazil, a good part of the population believes in this belief. There are many stories of people who have experienced this, who have seen any of these creatures. In our culture these creatures are extremely important. In the first season there were no other entities, such as "Mula sem Cabeça (Mule without Head)", "Boitata", "Caipora".
It's really nice to see that you guys treat your folklore sacred. After all, culture is an integral part of our identities. Hoping to see more in s2! :)
The show is good, but I was kind shocked that the series takes place in rio and because of the lack of indigenous representation, the dolphin part for me didn't make that much sense.. like how come an amazon river dolphin appear in Rio de Janeiro's beach... it doesn't make sense at all. But the series is good anyways.
Haha but we saw in the flashback why the dolphin is actually there. *Spoiler* Poor Manaus had no choice but to jump in the nearest body of water he can find haha
@@ScreenKings haha yes, but he usually lives in Rio Amazonas, he's a fresh water creature and lives incredibly far away from Rio de Janeiro (the same goes to Iara/Camila and Curupira). I was disappointed that the show takes place in Rio de Janeiro, none of those folk tales come from there. And I agree with camila oliveira, it's a pity that Iara/Camila isn't indigenous. I mean, the actress looks stunning and is great for the part, but making the character black was a huge departure from the legend... hugs from a Brazilian that comes from the Amazon forest! Thanks for your video!
Maybe they cast some actors w/ different nationalities (like the actors for Camila and Tutu) to appeal to an international market. So some of the audiences can identify themselves with. Maybe same for Rio because that's the more popular city in Brazil? I don't know haha we have no choice but to trust the showrunners on what they think is best. Thanks so much for watching my video! *hugs back* :)
The Gamba Geek actually Iara doesn't really have a race. There are legends about her throughout the hole country, and she was represented as white, indigenous or even black, and this is very related to her being a mermaid, a being that is known in the planet, and her stories came from portugal, northern tribes and afro americans. She is also sometimes related to Iemanja, the afro-american water goddess
Unfortunately, Invisible City even couldn't be called as an original serie because its screenplay has been compared to the Brazilian e-book Curupira Wanted (CURUPIRA PROCURADO, fiction, 2016) available in amazon.com. In this e-book you can find all these Brazilian legends: * the Black Iara (Luísa); * the Cuca (the alligator/butterfly witch) as the owner of a restaurant/bar; * the Dead Boto in an urban context; * Luna as the Headless Mule; * a Saci in the wheelchair; * the Curupira in a thriller story; * the Boitatá (the anaconda with multiple eyes) * the fogo fátuo (the wisp) CURUPIRA PROCURADO has a political and social approach that dialogues with the Brazilian scenario in 2015/2016. The story does mentioning the criminal action of Mining Companies and the corruption in the Brazilian government. You also can check the visual concept of the characters in the Instagram if you're tapping #curupiraprocurado #curupirawanted #leonardomendonza
I think the label "Netflix Original Series" does not mean that the script is not based on a pre-existing source material. It only means that the series is distributed first and exclusively on Netflix. Even Netflix films can be tagged as "Netflix Original Film" while being based on an adapted screenplay. Thanks so much for sharing (but the book is on Portuguese and I really don't speak the language). I'm sure some of the viewers who will visit this video will find your the book useful :)
I'm brazilian and I loved to see the folklore. I have grown up with those stories. If you have any doubts or curiosity about any entity, I'd be pleased to answer.
Thanks! OK I have one - why is Curupira's head burning? Is there a reason/purpose for that or it's just how he's portrayed in the legends. His feet being backwards is explained as a way to detract potential hunters.
@@ScreenKings OMG this one is difficult and I'm not totally sure. In our folklore Curupira has a "red hair such as the color of the fire". However he is also portrayed with indigenous features, so he's not white and doesn't have "european characteristics". When he is illustrated it seems ok to be redhead and look like an indigenous. But imagine that actor painting his hair red. KKKKKKK OMG it would look ridiculous. So they adapted his hair inspiring in the original description. There are another points here: this serie modernized the folklore representations, because the ones we had were very childish. In addition, when europeans arrived here they thought Curupira was a demon, so the fire can also be a reference to this impression. Finally, since Curupira is very powerful, giving him a "fire hair" makes him more scary.
@@ScreenKings Obs.: Curupira is not a demon. For indigenous people he is a forest protector. Europeans interpreted him as a demon because of their Christian view of the world.
@@ScreenKingsHe's feet is backward to make hunters be lost in the forest and die. Is not that is prohibited to hunt there, you can do it if you are searching for food to feed the tribe, for example. Curupira only hunts and fools hunters that are destroying the forest or when they are greedy and want to explore the forest's riches.
