I spent a many a day driving on Rt 29 from Ellicott City, Md. going to Washington, DC. Also going to Laural, Md., Silver Springs, Md., and Wheaton, Md. What a Route.
Xfinity has a regional call center on the Montgomery Industrial Park - I worked there for two years. Verizon Wireless has one in an office complex on Cherry Tree Crossing Road in the same area. Cherry Tree and Randolph Road make up a cross-county road that the ICC was meant to relieve - Cherry Tree goes not merely to Adelphi, but to Greenbelt - while Randolph Road goes to Wheaton. US 29 goes to Interstate 70 - but has the second-most ignominious ending of any Interstate or US highway in all of Maryland (second only to that of Interstate 70's eastern ending itself) - an L at MD 99.
I was not allowed to go any further than where this video started. At that time, I was not experienced on downtown driving. And that area is super unfamiliar to me. There’s probably videos on YT for what you’re looking for.
Blame the Carter administration - while the Eisenhower Interstate System - like the Autobahnen it was derived from - was, in fact, designed for much higher speeds - in fact, the Autobahnen has no maximum speed at all - the Arab oil shock forced a major clamp-down on speeds - especially in urban and interurban areas.
Further, US 29 - even here - is mostly urban - that is *despite* expressway-style interchanges with MD 650 and MD 200 - I know from working in the Montgomery Industrial Park - which is between MD 650 and Cherry Hill Road - where Cherry Hill becomes Randolph Road where it crosses US 29; in fact, US 29 itself is still urban until it reaches Olney. Very deliberate zoning. (Remember, Naval Surface Warfare Center White Oak used to occupy the SE corner of Colesville Road and New Hampshire Avenue (the expressway-style interchange featured at the beginning of this segment.)
Wow what memories I ran this route often delivering to Home Depot’s I’d run 29 to cherry hill road and cut over to US 1 for College Park and I ran to Ellicott City as well before the major floods anyway

I don’t understand why highways in va and md are only 55mph speed limits when they should be at least 65 or 70
