    This formation is actually perfect for TW troy, especially because it has specialised unit types like frontline and flanking, I’d love to see you try it in that game or even Pharaoh when it comes out

      Oh nice! I haven't played Troy, didn't know they had specialized unit types like that, that's awesome! Pharaoh will be interesting to play as well, that time period is so fascinating!

    It would be interesting to see how well this would work for Khorne, being a mostly infantry-based army. Using the armoured mortal infantry as the chest, and bloodletter demons (replacing with actual cavalry or juggernauts later on for the horns). Even fits thematically, because Khorne still gets minotaurs!
    Dark Elves could also do pretty well I think. Witch Elves (fast anti-infantry with poisoned attacks) or Shades (stealthed melee/ranged hybrids) almost feel made for being the horns.

    • @MalleusGaming57
      @MalleusGaming57  Рік тому +11

      Khorne would be even more of a blender I'd say! Even better is that you can summon in Bloodletters when the pincer closes for that complete surround. This is soooo fitting for Dark Elves too you're right Witch Elves and Shades would be amazing for the Horns, maybe some Executioners or Black Guard for the Chest

      @@MalleusGaming57 Dreadspears would probably be better for the initial line of the Chest, since they have shields. Then have Blackguard behind them, with Dark Shards in the Loins.

      @@MalleusGaming57 For a Dark Elf Chest I'd go with Sisters of Slaughter or Bleakswords, backed up by Har Ganeth Executioners. If you go all in on a Cult of Khaine theme having Witch Elves and Shades on the Horns, with Sisters of Slaughter & Har Ganeth Executioners backed up by a Hag Queen w/ Cauldron of Blood would allow you to shred infantry units.
      Sisters of Slaughter feel better then Bleakswords for me because it really feels like this army wants to be fast and close distance.

    If I remember correctly (it's been a while since I read about this, so I could be wrong), the Loins would be true reserves - only coming in to shore up failing lines. And they had their backs to the fight to ensure they wouldn't lose moral watching said line fail before they were to charge in. Personally, I would be worried about being shot in the back like that, but I'm not a legendary general. ;P
    Oh, and the ritualistic fighting was kept ritualistic by generalized tit-for-tat system. If one tribe caused a suspicious amount of casualties (i.e. it was obvious that they were aiming their shots to kill and maim rather than to harass and intimidate), then word would get around and the next few tribes they'd fight with would play hardball, too. After enough losses, the aggressor tribe could be pushed around by any other tribe, ritualistically or not - especially since they were likely just trying to bloody just that first tribe and not be in a protracted "war".
    Shaka broke that by actually planning on not stopping at just one - and, ya' know, playing a very different "game" than everyone else.

      @MalleusGaming57  Рік тому +5

      Yeah you're right with the Reserves, when researching I saw mention that they were made up of the Old Veterans and really young inexperienced Warriors so it really was more of a back up. And yeah! Standing with my back to the fight that's just asking for a spear to be thrown at me haha!
      I didn't know that about the earlier fighting that's really interesting! Neat how the different tribes would sorta police themselves that way then, really encouraging the honour system that. Don't mess around or else everyone else is make you find out haha

    This and similar tactics work great, but they have a major weakness - gunpowder and cav heavy armies. They tend to split up into smaller groups as the battle goes on, which makes separate skirmishes easy picking for gunlines and heavy cav charges.

    • @MalleusGaming57
      @MalleusGaming57  Рік тому +3

      Oh yeah absolutely, even in this I feel like the battle dragged on a bit as the enemy split up and I had to chase everything down. It was weird even though I shattered their front line almost instantly they still put up a fight with their ranged and I never was able to really take out their cav

      @@MalleusGaming57 These battle get very chaotic like that, but on the upside, you can divide infantry clumps into small defending "islands", and focus on microing cavalry and/or gun lines, going from "island" to "island" to pick enemy blobs off one by one. I got my "win battle outnumbered 10 to 1" achievement that way against almost 8k orks.

    Something I've learned since starting to play with Pike and Shot tactics, is the value of cavalry, and this battle proved it again. If you had been able to pull off a full envelopment, this battle would have been very short. But just a few cav units held off the flanking maneuver, forcing you to chunk through the main line.
    And you can tell the difference between dwarves and other ranged factions, with the cav being able to run down fleeing enemies, and reinforce key areas quickly. Funny that in "pike" and "shot" tactics, the "cavalry" are just as key.

    • @MalleusGaming57
      @MalleusGaming57  Рік тому

      Oh absolutely and if I didn't focus my flankers on them they would have been able to rear charge my main forces. The sheer mobility that cavalry have makes me consider them "problem solvers" in a battle, especially with pike and shot tactics since your formations are fairly rigid. Frankly I'm surprised my Gors were able to hold off Demigryphs so well!

    Maybe the horns can flank more properly if they are deployed in columns and in front of each other to control more forward ground on the flanks. You'd have to deploy the main force further back to compensate (unless vanguard deployment is available) or have the horns be a lot faster than the rest, which if i remember column is faster than row.

    Tbf this tactic worked because the Zulus outnumbered the British 10 to 1, that said does seem like a pretty decent tactic with fast charging factions like the Beastman, tho the sides would need some hounds or centaurs to deal with enemy cavalry

    Imo dwarves could make a good tier 3 army using this formation without using screening forces.
    -Slayer + Ranger (gw) horns
    -Shielded longbeards in the chest
    - GW Dwarf warriors in the loins.
    Your horns can win most flanking skirmishes and rain hell from behind once in position, your chest is unkillable and your loins can fill in the gaps to deal the damage.

      @MalleusGaming57  Рік тому +1

      Dwarf Rush would be the most glorious thing to see ever!!! No one would expect it either, you'd win from the sheer audacity of it alone haha! Those Rangers with the Throwing Axes would be really cool to use as the horns, they can get in pretty close on the flanks, though I do like the idea of Slayers as well. They may be good too as the Loins, charging in once the lines are engaged for that extra punch in support

      @@MalleusGaming57 I initially had a modded dwarf faction in mind when I asked this question. They're called the Kraka Drak dwarves. I'm sure you can find the mod on the workshop.
      They're a more melee-oriented dwarf faction who take after their Norscan neighbors/enemies. They don't have any gunpowder or fancy weapons of war. Instead, they're a lot more grizzled and rely on rune magic instead.
