    As a sophomore who has been struggling with this for days, it was relieving to find someone who is able to explain Polyatomic ionic compounds really well.
    I’ve been sitting at my table until 12am trying to do my homework and my teacher didn’t explain anything and I’ve been trying to figure it out for a while now.
    You’ve made my day so much easier!! Thank you!!

      Your teacher told you the most important fact: you need to know the names of these ions before you can name the compound. Although there are tricks you can use to "memorize" them. You know your friend's names, but you never prepare flash cards to "memorize" their names. Think about how you know their names, it may give you some idea how to know the names of the "ions". Good luck!

    I really appreciate your videos. I just found you and I am trying to go through and pick what I need to watch. I can name the formulas given the compound name but having the formula and converting to the compound name is proving a little more difficult for me.

      I see this problem all the time. Students are usually more successful going from name to formula because there are a lot of hints in the name for multiple charges and polyatomics. Spend some time learning your ions. Recognizing the multiple charge cations REALLY helps you name those appropriately. And once you realize what groups of elements make up the polyatomics, you'll be able to pick those out and name them. (Molecules are a LOT less scary when you corral up the atoms in a polyatomic!)

    Thank you! Wow!!! You make this so much fun. Another helpful way I learned to memorize most of your polyatomic compounds is with the acronym: Nick the Camel ATE a Clam for Supper in Phoenix.
    In these words, all vowels in each word are your charges
    AND all consonants in each word are your subscripts. For example,
    Nick: (N,C,K) x3 consonants. (I) x1 vowel = NO3 -1 ---> Nitrate
    Camel: (C,M,L) x3 consonants. (A,E) x2 vowel = CO3 -2 -----> Carbonate
    Clam: (C,L,M) x3 consonants. (A) x1 vowel = ClO3 -1 -----> Chlorate
    ETC.... do the same for Supper (SO4)-2 ---->Sulfate and Phoenix (PO4)-3 -----> Phosphate

    I'm guessing the only time this trick doesn't work is when naming for chromate versus dichromate? If I assume that chromate has one less oxygen, then I'd be wrong, because chromate has 4 oxygens and dichromate has 7.
