Growing up in Detroit during this era there were numerous GM employees in our neighborhood. In particular was a Pontiac engineer that was into drag strip racing. I remember he had a blue Catalina Super Duty with aluminum front fenders, no sound insulation ,no power steering or brakes, heater and radio delete also. This car was very fast and he accumulated many street and strip victories. When he opened the dump tubes the ground would vibrate! I never saw another exactly like his again.

Thank you Lou for bringing this Super Duty Pontiac out of his collection for our enjoyment. As I’ve gotten older and become more aware of what these cars were and the power of that 421, it has become arguably my favorite car. I appreciate all the muscle machines but I wouldn’t bat an eye trading my 4 speed Roadrunner for a car like this one… Russ is all smiles knowing what he’s got..

The 60's was Pontiac's greatest decade. They were the leader in many ways. Most of the decade they were 3rd in manufactures sales. My family's first Pontiac was a 62 Catalina which later became my first car. Pontiac has been my favorite manufacturer from that time on. I have had 15 over the years and currently have an original 74 Trans Am. This 63 SD 421 represents Pontiac at its best. You mentioned the Swiss cheese frame at that time to show what extent Pontiac would go to win by shaving the extra pounds off the car to be as light as Chevys, Fords and Plymouths. In addition to all the aluminum parts on this particular car, aluminum body panels could also be added for further weight reduction. Pontiac was still pulling a rabbit out of their hat with the SD 455 Firebirds in 1973 and 1974 when the muscle car world was all but dead. No one was more sad than me when Pontiac came to an end in 2010. Many young people know Pontiac only as an unexciting car that ended in 2010. Thanks to Russ and Lou for showing how great the Pontiac brand was.

I still own a 1964 Pontiac Catalina convertible that came with 4 on the floor and bucket seats. It still has the 2+2 emblems and the 421 emblems on the car. The original 421 with the three deuce steup was long gone when I purchased it, however I do remember the exhaust had cut outs coming off of the headers. I bought it from my brother in about 1977. Saint Paul Minnesota. He was upset that the radiator froze up on it here during a Minnesota winter. I took advantage when he said he would sell it to me for $100.
As I understand it, he purchased from someone who came in to my dad's gas station. This man said his son was in the service and that he needed to sell his car for him. So anyways...
A lot of fond memories attached to that car. Went through a few engines. I believe it has a 389 in it currently. Last started probably about 2000. Was forced to remove it from my mom's property (where I had kept it stored, covered, outdoors for 35 years - I moved it twice a year. On and off the street) in Saint Paul Minnesota in about 2006. Paid for outdoor storage after that and kept a plastic sheet and tarp over it up until about 2017. I quit paying storage that year, but i am pretty sure it is still there. It still has solid fenders, hood and trunk lid. Even the interior floor was still there last time I saw it in 2018. Last person to look at it rolled their eyes and offered me $500. He said that "Everyone thinks they have gold." ... he then left without the car. That was in 2017.
Anyone who may be interested leave a reply here. If you tube does not censor it I will respond.

Lou, yet another rare and amazing peice of Americana. My dad sold Pontiacs in the early '60's and owned a 62' Bonneville 389.
This car is fantastic. I might add '63 was the first model year for the stacked headlights which I believe ran through at least the '66 models. Such an identifiable look. That 421 was a beast. Pontiac was king at the track during this period. I hope your viewers appreciate what you have shown here. Thx.

The 2-door sedan was the lightest of all '63 Catalinas, as well as being the lightest body style for all makes.
I'm assuming that what they mean by "Swiss cheesing", they were refering to cutting holes into the frame, so as to make it lighter, like car buffs in highschool would sometimes claim to have done just that.
I've previously never heard of using aluminum for exhaust manifold castings. After having seen headers glow on a dyno test, one would think that the lower than iron melting point of aluminum would make that light metal unfeasable for casting exhaust manifolds with.
That '63 Catalina still had plenty of charachter, nearly equivalent to a contemporary Buick or Chevrolet. I dig those taillights of which I vote to be one of Pontiac's best ever, if not the very best. The later full-sized Pontiacs appear to be overweight, in comparison.
I tip my virtual hat to Pontiac Division going out of their way, in order to produce the lightest possible full-sized GM product of that era

It was 1962 on Dune Road in Westhampton Beach Long Island New York. 62 years ago and I have remembered this all my life. I was a college boy, working for the summer as a chauffeur for one of New York's multi-millionaire kings. It was millionaire's row on Dune Road - flat as a table - straight as an arrow. Not a lot of traffic, just the occaisional Rolls Royce. I was pulling out of the driveway when I heard the siren screaming. I hit the brakes hard as the huge gray ambulance approached. The engine on it was roaring, competing with the siren. The front of the flat gray, pretty much unmarked ambulance was up in the air - the rear squatted down, tearing up the road, nearby sand going up in smoke both from the speed of the ambulance and the grinding of the fat tires.
I was a good judge of speed, a knack that came in handy later in my career as a Highway Police Officer. I immediately gauged this flying gray beast's speed at 110 miles per hour. At the time it was the fastest I had ever seen any vehicle move. As it flashed by me I could clearly see the 421 emblem on the flank and U.S. Navy in black letters. His foot was on the floor and those carburators sounded like they were sucking in enough air to include birds and squirrels. I had grown up in new york city and I had seen emergency vehicles of every stripe responding to all kinds of calls - but i had never seen anything like this.
Somehow i got the idea that there was a small child, a drowning victim they must be racing to save. Turns out it was. The boy lived. And I remembered that 421 Gray Pontiac ambulance with U.S. Navy printed on the door for the rest of my life.

Hi, Lou! In 1963, Pontiac was the big trendsetter. The split grille had already been a division hallmark for a few years, and it was in 1963 that the full-size Pontiacs introduced what was popularly called the "Coke bottle" profile. They were also first fitted with the stacked headlamps. They weren't the first cars to have them, but they were a feature a lot of the competition soon began to copy. Just from these things alone, even a relatively plain two-door Catalina sedan like this was a styling standout. BTW, I did meet Arnie Beswick at a Pontiac-Oakland Club convention many years ago.
A couple of questions: First, what does Russ mean by a "Swiss cheese car?" And second, I noticed this car has parallel windshield wipers instead of the dual-facing wipers these cars typically had. That struck me strange, because although the Tempest had parallel wipers from the beginning, the big Pontiacs didn't have them until 1970. If anybody can explain, please reply.
Anyway, thanks to you and Russ for this glorious ride

Great engine setup on the 421 SD Super Duty, but.. Ordering the car without power steering, without power brakes,, without even a heater !.. No radio either, and standard shift.. That's a hoary beast of a car.. I'd have to get some basic comfort/ease of operation features.. Heater/AC, power steering and brakes, automatic transmission, cruise control and electric windows.. Sure, it's a bit heavier, but still plenty fast and MUCH easier to live with.

Pontiac is the only GM car that didn't have the X frame. The X frame was vulnerable to T bone collision.
Pontiac has the full perimeter frame, and gave protection in T bone collision.
Another feature is the wide track. All other GM makes used frame from the 50's. This meant that the tires were inset from the fenders. You can see this in the '59 Chevy.
GM did correct the frame until 1965. Do you remember the wide oval tires? Wide oval tires were to make up for the narrow frame.
    But Pontiac had wide track
