      @QazCetelic 3 місяці тому +4

@@SundownMarkTwo You should also consider protecting yourself against ransomware. People often set up automatic backups, but some ransomware scans the system for that and uses the API keys used to perform backups to ransom the offsite data too. You can prevent this by using object storage with versioning and object lock or simply logging in before the backup and logging out after the backup without storing the password on the device.

A couple lil things I wanna add, as someone who used to use them for games, external SSDs can introduce a lot of latency and therefore stuttering in games, though probably not CS. The cost difference between pcie 3 and 4 drives is quite small too, last I bought one it was only a tenner

    • @Unknown_Genius

If you got a proper external SSD it works like a charm and without stutters and with the same performance as having a proper internal one.
That being said I'd still not recommend it unless you really need the games on the go, mainly for the obvious reasons like: Them clogging up the USB ports, taking up extra space and the fact that it's way too easy to accidentally unplug them just enough to loose your unsaved progress (especially if you got a pet running around).

Size does impact the performance of an SSD. This is because higher capacity SSDs tend to have more NAND Flash modules, though this doesn't always apply when comparing SSDs from different manufacturers or made in different years. For example I have a 1TB SATA SSD which uses multiple FLASH modules however these days you can buy a compact NVMe SSD which has just one Flash module. There's also the aspect of diffrent NAND Flash types. Your Samsung QVO uses QLC cells which hold more data per cell however they perform worse and can sustain a lower number of write cycles compared to TLC cells. And all of that's before you consider that some SSDs (especially the very cheap ones) lack a DRAM cache which has a big impact on performance.

It's also important how fast the VRAM can be filled when it comes to 3D graphics like the main menu of CS:GO. I suspect a slower GDDR5X will also load slower into the main menu compared to, say, one with HBM2 or GDDR6 memory.

Cpu also plays a big part in this, i have a gen.4 nvme with over 7gbps of reads and got 26 seconds opening cs2 from fresh startup and 16sec for consecutive ones. Although not a weak pc, i have a 5800x with 3200 cl15 32gb with a 3070. The valve logo and cs2 splash screen took no longer than 4 - 6 seconds, but the "initializing" from steam took the majority of the time going for over 10 seconds on the second start to almost 20 in the firt one.

Upon further testing, my sata 480gb ssd kingston, like a really low end one, got the exact same load times. 26-27 on the first load and 16-17 on consecutives. Drive speeds is definitely not the bottle neck on my system.

i think you have a misconception at 8:30. 2,5 Inch HDDs are actually very capable of pretty decent speeds. their read head has a smaller travel (good for any non sequential reads, like a game), and the platters can be spun a lot faster because they are more lightweight. In enterprise storage systems, there are setups with 2,5 and 3,5 drives mixed to reap the benefits of both form factors. 2,5' Hdds are definetely not a worse drive in general.

I'm starting to suspect there are also speed differences between desktop hard drives. Like maybe the lower-density ones are not just using lower density platters, but are also single-sided to save on the cost of coating the other side and including a second head, so in practice if you have a bigger one it's also going to be reading and writing twice as much data at a time.

This is spot on. Technology has been improving too. My oldest 1TB drive from 2011 was slower than it's younger brother of same capacity bought around 2016.

There're also 2 types of coating, SMR and CMR. HDD using SMR coating has higher density memory but slower write, while CMR coating has lower memory density but no write speed penalty.

For searching for files in your file browser (incredibly useful when producing sample based music in my case) the difference in speed between an ssd and nvme is pretty massive. I do think SSD are so cheap now its probably the best choice for most people but for keeping your windows install on a 500gb $50 nvme is pretty sweet.

NVME's are only really necessary if you're playing things like Cyberpunk or Alan Wake 2, big budget and hardware intensive games that do a lot of hotloading of assets. On SSD's Id have issues where sound or textures load in late or video doesn't load in at all, which I just didn't have on NVME.
That being said its also the only times I've really seen an actual need for them. Though, you can get some pretty fast PCIE5 2tb NVME's for only 100 bucks if you live in europe or the USA.

a windows dynamic disk stripe set with two modern enterprise drives (i.e. wd hc530, samsung exos) will reach the read/load speeds of a single sata 6gbit/s ssd - around ~500mb/s. placing them in category "A" as well. i have two 14tb wd drives (each with around 250mb/s speed) adding up to 28tb (~25.45tib) and ~500mb/s speeds. it is really a good feeling to be able to put your whole steam, epic, ubi, ea and bnet library on them. and have load times of at least a 2.5" ssd.
and to add to that still. it's waaaay cheaper per tb.

11:48 You didn't mention the fact that many operating systems automatically use RAM to buffer the files on disk. This could also explain the fact that the RAM drive was just as fast as the NVME.

back in the days of csgo, you had made a video about csgo loading time and suggested a trick that using fps_max 49, capped the maximum fps to 49 and it made the game loading into the maps faster, the trick works on all the drive
i wonder does it still work with cs2

Most Operating Systems actually use a lot of the RAM to store files you frequently use in it as a cache, which explains the second way faster start. Especially when almost all game files fit in your RAM.
