This is possibly the best use I have ever seen of a gelli plate. I love this technique. Thank you so much for sharing it and your explanation was fabulous.
That’s a very kind compliment, thank you 😊
Ditto. Job well done. Bravo. Take a bow now.
I think that you and yeates makes could team. up and open up art to a whole new population!!! both so talented and generous.
Thanks. I started off learning the gel plate from watching Yeates makes, I feel he is in a different league to me though! 🙂
@@gelwithmark You're both on my "must watch" list!
@@FR-wc2dn 🙂
This technique brings gel printing to a whole different ( higher ) level.
You've floored me with this, Mark! Can't thank you enough for the share of what you've discovered.
No problem, hope you have some fun trying it! 🙂
You have opened up my world as to gel prints!
Glad to help.
Hello! I just liked and subscribed to you channel! How generous of you to share this with us. I am a total beginner with a new gel plate and it means so much to get good (understandable!) information. I am a senior and also appreciate there not being loud crazy music! 😉 I look forward to future videos, learning, and being inspired by your lovely work! 🙏🏼
Thanks for subscribing, it’s appreciated. Glad my video has sparked some interest.
you have found one of the best uses for the gel plate--ever!!! thank you so much for sharing. YOU ARE AN ARTIST!!1 YOU COULD USE A CRAYON AND CREATE SOMETHING WONDERFUL! I look forward to seeing what else you do.
Such a kind comment, thank you it’s greatly appreciated!
Great techniques and love the torn edge of the paper one also.
Thank you 😊
Wow, this is one of the best gel plate tutorials I've seen, simply brilliant. I like the fact that this is original art, whereas a magazine pull has copyright concerns for me. Your techniques are amazing and your teaching skills are exceptional. P.S. I love the fact that there is no music in the background as i find it so distracting. Can't wait to see more from you, I'm so taken with your style and ability!
Thank you for the kind words, it’s appreciated!
I agree and thanks for reminding me Kathy! I commented already but somehow forgot to mention that! For me, Mark using his original art makes him stand out from the crowd.
@@MissIdolize if your new to gel printing, and you are looking for something a little different tutorial wise I would highly recommend “Yeates Makes” he inspired me to try gel printing and has a lot of really informative process tutorials, much more than me.
@@gelwithmark Thank you so much Mark. I can't wait to check this out!
Nice one for taking the plunge Mark and adding to the gel plate conversation : ) great vid to kick off with
Thanks Mark, that means a lot coming from you. Your videos where what inspired me to try out lots of different techniques on the gel plate as you were the only one really that I could find that was doing more fine art print style gel plate stuff. Always love seeing your new videos and where your pushing gel plate printing towards. 👍🏻
Fantastic clear demo Mark. I have been struggling with getting good results using image transfer from a gel plate. I also prefer the idea of creating my own artwork to use..... so thank you very much! will have a go....
Thanks, glad you like it.
If you have any questions, let me know and I’ll try and help!
This is exciting! The charcoal and using your photo makes this IMO stand out as art rather than craft use of the jelly plate.
Thanks. Yes that is my intention. 👍🏻
I've just recently been trying gel printing monotypes, and your videos are by far my favorite. I haven't been too knocked out by the "artsy-craftsy" look of my prints, but your techniques have shown me that I can get back to the more fine art look of my previous oil paint/clear acrylic plate monotypes. Thank you so much!
No problem, glad you found my videos helpful.
the charcoal and the torn-edge-paper-paint-removal-method is a great idea !!!
Thanks
Thanks for sharing. Will try this. Would be nice to see how you did the second transfer using different colours and brushwork 👍
I’ll make a video showing the process of the 2nd image soon. 👍🏻
Thanks for this! I've struggled like crazy with image transfers and am excited to try this! I have everything I need too - the gelli plate, the transfer papers, the charcoal, and mixed media paper. I'm going to do this tomorrow! So happy to find a way that I think will really work after all! Thanks again!
Cool. Yes you can get some really interesting tones if you blend parts of the charcoal out, a little tip, if you rub some charcoal onto a separate piece of paper to produce charcoal dust, you can apply that to the transfer paper with a blending stick thing or an earbud, might be known to you as a que tip?? Anyway you can achieve some lovely soft tones to add dynamic range to your image.
Let me know how you get on!
@@gelwithmark Fabulous tip! (Yes, Q-tip.) Thanks! And I am about to experiment with white charcoal on the tip of the nose of the horse I copied from my inkjet print. Curious if white charcoal will do something. But whatever, this is doing great so far!
Finally, the gelli plate grows up to be a really fantastic printing tool. You are wonder, I adore your images as well, Quite contemporary, love it love, oh did I say I love it? Holy Bum Snot I am hooked!
That’s very kind. 🙂
This method is positively delicious! I agree with you-it’s much more “arty” than the magazine transfers that everyone else does. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks for taking the time to view! 🙂
Happy to have found this channel. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoy it!
Great idea. TFS. I’ve recently been playing with Pan Pastels on the gel plate, which work brilliantly. Charcoal was where I was going next! 😊
I haven’t tried pan pastels.
@@gelwithmark You can do the same transfer technique you did, but using stick chalk pastels. Pan pastels can be placed directly on the gel plate, then the print pulled with acrylic, or gel medium. There are a few video tutorials on UA-cam. 😊
@@tracywilson9848 I’ll have a look. Thanks 😊
For someone about to start working with gel plates for the first time, this has been SO inspirational. Thanks Mark
Glad it helps. 🙂
HOLEY SMOKES!!!! I gotta try dis! 🙏🍕
Yes give it a go it’s a really cool transfer method and opens up a lot of possibilities. It’s my go to transfer method at present.
It looks great! Thanks for sharing. BTW - it almost looks like a poster for cluster headaches!
Thanks. Yea I can see what you mean.
Super demo using charcoal and how you apply your paint to the plate. Thanks!
You are so welcome!
Nice, original and very beautiful…please keep going!
Thanks. Will do 👍🏻
Thank you so much, I don't really like the magazine transfer, I want to give my transfers a more personal style. So your method is perfect! Thanks again!
Yes I’m totally the same as you in regards to the transfers. You don’t have to use tracing paper either you can use normal paper too, it gives you much more scope for varying the tonal values. Enjoy.
Welcome to youtube! good start, good video!💯
Thank you!! 😊
Great ! Nice clear explanation…..will be giving this a go ! Looking forward to more !
Glad it was helpful!
Wow! It’s giving me ideas for artwork resembling etching and lithography without the chemicals. Thank you!
No problem. Enjoy it’s a fun technique.
WOW. That is gorgeous. Love the photos. I'm definitely going to try this method/medium. Thanks for a great tutorial/demo and thanks for no irritating music! Awesome.
Thanks . Good luck, let me know
how you get on.
Love your edging technique with the torn edge on the plate - brilliant!
Thanks 😊
Thanks 😊
What a very clever technique! Thank you for all the generous information!
My pleasure. Glad you liked it.
Fun techniques. Thanks for sharing. Great first video.
Glad you liked it!
Hi Mark, thanks for generously sharing this process! I have tried this out with my high school art class and they love it! They are creating some amazing stuff! Great change from the usual Lino, etching etc. and very immediate!
Cool glad your students are having fun with it!
Wow! Thank you for sharing this innovative method. I’m going to try it and possibly share it with my middle school students.
Please do!
Thank you for posting this! I want to get into monoprinting. I am already an illustrator with only a minor interest in collage and I had issues with image transfers too on my first attempt...and I was using vintage magazines.. I want something a little more artsy and want to draw my own stuff, but wasnt sure how to approach it. Thank you again for this technique.
My pleasure. Make sure you check out my other videos as I expand on this technique by combining it with soft pastel as well.
This is great! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is a great demonstration--thanks so much!
You are so welcome!
Wonderful work! 👏👏👏
Thanks
Great stuff Mark, simple and effective. You present the subject well and I’ve no doubt this channel will take off. I can’t wait for more videos from you. Good luck 🤞🏻
I appreciate that!
Brilliant Mark…well done on your first video, having watched many other gel plate tutorials,I was wondering why nobody had experimented with charcoal and had put me off having ago because I simply thought it didn’t have great results but you have shown me it can..can’t wait to give this a go!!!Thankyou so much for sharing and look forward to seeing more from you.Good luck with your new channel 👍👏🏻
Glad it was helpful!
Had a go this morning Mark, just did a trace from a magazine and charcoaled over the top of it as per your tutorial and it turned out great!Youve given me the inspiration to draw something of my own now and have another go!Many many thanks.Keep up your amazing artwork and I look forward to your next video!!!😍
@@beverlymarch7916 glad to help, good work!
Excellent technique, you didn't need the second face. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for your comment. In regards to the 2nd face, when I was doing this print, it wasn’t a case of “do I think this images needs something else?” it was more I want to see if 1- I can add a second charcoal transfer over the top of a transfer that has already been added to the plate and 2 - I’m always trying experiments to see what might happen and what happy occurrences might be achieve through these experiments. 🙂
I really enjoyed this tutorial. The description of how to follow this process was very easy to understand for how to have success in using charcoal sticks to transfer original images. The resulting pull off a Gelli Plate creates an original, one of a kind piece of art. Thank you for sharing this technique of yours. Kudos to you!
Your welcome, glad you found it helpful.
Congrats on your first video. Excellent quality - I'm inspired to give it a go!
Go for it!
@Ig Hanchks thanks for watching. Good to know that the pacing is ok! 👍🏻
Wow! Two videos and you are already over 1,000 subscribers. You obviously have nailed it.
🤣 I’ve got a fairly good fb following so I think a lot have joined me from there.
@@gelwithmark What is your Facebook name? I couldn't find it under gel with mark.
@@mary-chrishines9391 I’ve made it a bit confusing for people as my Facebook name is -

every time I see your work I wonder why only frightened faces and never happy ones ... must be a style you choose
I’m quite the cynic so maybe that’s it 😅
Great job Mark! So glad to see you sharing your art on UA-cam 💗💗
Thanks so much!
Fantastic ❤️ love your videos 👌
Thanks for the support.
Great video and technique. Thank you. May I suggest you get an even coat on your brayer first and apply paint that way.
Thanks. I’ll give it a try.
Perfect video. I have a Brother laser printer at home and couldn't get a Gel print from a black and white copy until I ran the paper twice through the machine. This is because home laser printers don't get enough ink on the paper
Thanks I have tried double printing on my laser jet but my paper always seems to shift slightly and I don’t get a clean print. 😢
@@gelwithmark what a shame, but really don't need to use this technique as you developped your own style
@@pascaleputz1027 I would like to find some other type of transfer method that I could use though as I have some very intricate illustrations and some nice photos that I’ve draw/taken that I would like to be able to use in my work some how, just haven’t managed to find a suitable transfer method for that tho, I’ll keep investigating.
@@gelwithmark I know it's not the same but yould print them on Deli or tissue paper which becomes transparent when glued down with e gel matte medium. To feed this fine paper through the printer you'll have to "glue" it to copy paper or use Freezer paper
Thank you Mark! This is so helpful! You are so gifted!!! And inspiring!
Thank you. That’s very kind of you to say. I appreciate your comments.
Great video and well presented. There was actually a lot of good information, including the torn edges. Who would have thought of using vine charcoal?
Yes it’s a fun method with lots of scope for experimentation. 🙂
yes love the torn edge look
Thank you so much for sharing this, I love the idea of being able to create prints from my own charcoal sketches. I will definitely be giving this a go!
Glad to share. Let me know how you get on! 🙂
@@gelwithmark Hi again, I absolutely love this technique of being able to combine your own drawing with printing. I have videoed myself trying it out and will publish the video at 4pm on Friday here ua-cam.com/video/mtNSP_z4wIk/v-deo.html I have given you a shout-out and linked your channel in the video description. Many thanks!
Amazing didnt know you could that love it well done you

Wpw...great tutorial of a beautiful technique. I'm heading out to buy some charcoal! Really appreciate this.
Thanks. Any questions feel free to ask.
thats brilliant because you always have to use a lazor toner and i onlyhave an ink printer that wastes alot of ink. so glad i found thia alternative,,thanks so much.
No problem, hope it works out for you.
Hi from New Zealand. Love this technique. Thanks.

Great lesson, have subscribed. I really liked the first transfer (the one using colour) and if you have time would like to see your process.
Thank you. Yes I will be making a video combining this transfer method with some colour brush work in the near future.

Congratulations! You made the jump! Your video is great--very smooth! I love how the charcoal transfers look, as well as the torn edge. Can't wait to give it a try! I'm also really feeling the powerful imagery. It still feels different to me than your other gel images I've seen, most reminiscent of the man series, but so much more powerful.
