Hi, great channel and very informative videos. Forgive me if this has already been mentioned, but if you're using Snapseed to create images for laser printing, you can save your edits as a 'Look' which saves a lot of repeated steps in subsequent edits, and if an image requires something slightly different you can simply edit the relevant step in the Look. You just save your initial edit as a Look and it appears alongside all the Snapseed looks.
I recently heard that tip of leaving your print on the plate overnight too. One hour worked beautifully. I think I NEED more gel plates! Thanks for sharing these techniques!

Another great video, not too long. I watch Robyn Mcclendon’s that go 1 hour plus (I collage during parts) I got my first successful transfer from old school book of clip art textures, very high contrast, blew them up on my copier and using your light touch THANK YOU
Wow, 1 hour! I did make a video early on about that long and I think it's had about 10 views!!! So pleased you got a successful transfer, I think the inking and pressure are so key but perhaps missing in some of the other videos I watched.

Cheers Karen - since making this vid I've discovered that laser transfers work better if you print out on the colour settings, even when the image is black and white. Hope that helps : )
Thank you so much for this video. I realised about the gentle pressure needed to transfer the image to the plate... I accidentally dropped a laser image onto the inked up plate and it transferred!

this is just fantastic .. so clear and such an inspiration .. so I bought a gelli and printed a laser print from a nice photo .. and started .. and go the really first time directly great result !! well no: my image was not the positive but the negative on the gelli plate and later on my paper. How is this possible????

Thanks for the great video. I did an experiment awhile back testing all the various brands of paint in my collection. The only reliable brand for the image transfer was Amsterdam in dark colors. I'm not sure that I tried Downer Rowley because I may not have had any. But Amsterdam worked with my own laser prints every time.
Amsterdam and Daler Rowney Graduate seem to be the best - I feel a bit more qualified to judge now as i've tried quite a few!

The app is very useful - you can do a lot with the double exposure tool.
Super video. I've just got a gel plate and am about to get into producing my own images. This has been really helpful - I wouldn't have thought of leaving so long before pulling. How long do you leave the first image to dry for?

Hi Aine, I didn't try pulling the initial transfer. This is mainly habit because I've been enjoying doing image transfer over my gel prints and having a base layer of acrylic makes that easier rather than areas of raw paper. No reason why you couldn't though, you just need to get the paper on there quick!

Only laser for this technique -There are other ways of transferring inkjet though, plenty tutorials out there.

Hi Maggie. sorry to take so long to reply. The laser printer I used was an office copier printer. I have a print shop locally who print stuff out for me. Not sure of the make, I'll ask next time I am in. It makes a lot of difference printing on the colour setting, even when the picture is black and white. Beyond that, it is all about thin layers, working fast and having a featherlight touch when transferring.
Most impressed! Have you thought of using oil transfer of the toner for for when letterset runs out - use essence or similar (i use essence of lemon grass - smells nicer! Is described on the net, or in Nista's book. If you drew your figures you would have further choice. Do think you should run training courses on the subject of'How to make a well designed and effective You-tube presentation'!!
Cheers Cathy, glad you feel the presentation style works. The techniques you write about, they sound fascinating but I've never really come across any of them! I'm relatively new to gel plate so will have to do some research!
Hi there! I love your freedom of expression and incredible forays into gelli printing - and that you share so much. Very generous. I am a 'regular' printmaker...You have inspired me to search for my gelli plate (which i never tried out!). I wonder whether I can use my Charbonnel water-based oil inks on it, or my regular acrylic paints? Are the acrylics you use a bit more runny than regular acrylics? thanks so much!!!
Hi Barb, I'd avoid using anything even vaguely oil based on the gel plate - maybe some others who follow the channel may have some more advice or experience - I'll ask next time I put a video on gel plate out.The acrylics I use are mainly fairly heavy body, buttery brands like Amsterdam and Daler Rowney graduate.

Holy crap, you are incredible! Your work itself, ability to clearly teach your techniques, and infinite experimental imagination, plus excellent video editing…. are all rare and beautiful! I feel extremely inspired and keep watching more of your videos instead of taking my dog out, hopefully he’ll forgive me… I’ll have to check your channel to see if you’ve done any printing onto fabric using all these methods. It would change my life to be able to apply this stuff to fiber art, but I suspect that the texture of even a very finely woven fabric might get in the way of a truly clean transfer.

@@yeatesmakes I absolutely cannot wait to see what you discover by experimenting with using your techniques on fabric! I’ve done a few attempts myself to try and bring what I’ve learned from your videos into my work, and the results are extremely encouraging! The details can ABSOLUTELY be preserved as long as you’ve got fabric with a fairly fine weave, AND, super-matte gel medium seems to pull a print beautifully and doesn’t make the fabric unattractively shiny. The biggest challenge is going to be planning, because I suspect that while one layer of gel medium doesn’t seem to stiffen the fabric too much, you’d run into some trouble trying to pull multiple overlapping prints each with a layer of medium… SO MUCH TO DISCOVER!
Also, unrelated: a video that I bet you’d be brilliant at making is something about what you’ve learned about masking off areas in clever ways when printing complex pieces! The techniques you demonstrated in your video about planning and composition for photo collage were absolutely fantastic!
I do gel prints onto fabric and so far have been spectacularly unsuccessful with transfer techniques. Even using very finely tightly woven fabric. I haven't given up yet and these videos are giving me some ideas to try.
@@leonieandrewsart4137 I’ve kept experimenting, and while it’s definitely frustratingly unpredictable trying to get transfers on fabric sometimes, I’ve found that I can usually get a complete transfer of imagery from the plate to thin fabrics like muslin or similarly weighted synthetics by backing my plate with a piece of plexiglass, letting my image on the plate dry, applying a thin layer of either super matte gel medium or (and this leaves a nicer hand to the fabric), golden matte medium, then flipping the plate over onto my fabric and actually clamping it to a piece of plywood for half an hour. I use plates that I’ve cut down to 4”x5”, so it’s pretty easy to achieve even pressure when clamping, not sure how it would work for larger plates.

Hi there, I tend to get my local print shop to print things for me. They use one of those big office style printer copiers.
Ya shoulda made laser copies of the letraset illustration to use for future prints. Heck I’d even buy a few laser prints of them off you!

I got them printed on a laser printer / copier at the local print shop. There was about 5 days between getting them printed and then using as a transfer. I'm not aware of any negative effect of leaving the print outs lying around for a while before using them as transfers. I find what makes the most difference is the inking up on the plate and the pressure used - a thin layer and feather light pressure! also different paints behave differently - it's alchemy and still a bit of a mystery to me - I'm going to do a load more to see if I can discover absolutely reliable paints etc. Apparently Amsterdam paints are good for this process....

Thank you once again. Love the details on the snapseed app. Did you know you can also make your own lettraset rubons. There are a few tutorials on how to do that. Lucky you to have the old style ones though I loved them as a kid.
Homemade letraset, what??!! I'll investigate... Snapseed, great, really impressed for a free app. I love my letraset, and the scalpel and rubbing tool I got from my dad - takes me back to some of my earliest memories, sneaking a go on the letraset!!!
Hi! I'm new to your videos but have taken a dip dive lately trying to transfer photos to laser copies. I've tried everything & it's still not working? Thoughts. You mentioned in another video something about copying the photo on "color" setting instead of black & white. That didn't work either. Does the paper have to have a gloss or will any kind of copy paper work? I have experimented with my paint applications, time pulling, etc. and just can't get an image to appear on the plate. Any comments you have would be so appreciated! Thanks you!!
I tried regular copy paper. No luck. Spent twenty dollars for glossy laser printer paper. No luck. I’m totally discouraged.

I'm still trying to get this to work, but your video helps! Do you have any difficulty with the initial layer of paint (black) drying too quickly on the plate? I'm wondering if adding retarder to the paint will affect the process? Also, I've seen in other videos and discussions that some laser printers are better than others. Its so interesting that you've commented today Ann because I revisited this technique yesterday for the first time since making the video. Yes, you need to be quick! Get the paint rolled out thin, even but don't hang about. In terms of the copier / printer, the most important thing is that you print in colour setting, not black and white/grayscale. This seems weird as the pic will likely be black and white - this makes LOADS of difference - not sure if I put it in the video or not!!! also, all the usuals, a very high contrast image is fundamental.
2 years since you made this! But wow still such incredible impact 🤩🙏. And darn, I bought a laser printer on sale yesterday for this process. But it only prints black. I’ll have to take it back I guess.
You use various brands of paint. I understand the use of Liquitex and System management 3 - really good idea, but I'm not sure about the others - what are the qualities which make the other paint for the job you have given them. The really cynic might say something about advertising - have bought a tube of each !
Hi Cathy, I love your comments. If only some fancy company would drop a load of paint on me for featuring their products!!! In my limited gel plate experience I have found that laser copy transfer is the one technique where paint brands do seem to make a difference. The winner at present is Daler Rowney graduate acrylic. Works a treat!

Mine DID stick. But i don't know if the paper i used was too flimsy or because I'm using a homemade Gelli plate. I might have to invest in a real one! I'll try it again. I love this idea.
Hi maria, I've heard home made plates can be a bit hit and miss for image transfer. You could buy a small one and gauge the difference...

Thank you for another helpful video! For some reason I cannot transfer any laser-printed image to my gelly board. When I take off the sheet, there is just nothing on the board. What could the reason be?
So frustrating, my best advice is;
- high contrast image
- thin layer (experiment with different brands of paint)
- very light pressure to transfer
- don't hang around between inking and transfer!

I have great success with magazine transfers but NO success with laser transfers! I am a mixed media painter and have taught gel plate classes. I have one coming up in the Fall and want to teach transfer techniques. Bought a laser printer….doesn’t work!! Copies from Staples don’t work!! Are some toners better than others? Help!!

I had no idea you can still get Letraset
I am able to transfer my high contrast laser print to a Gelli plate, and it dries. When I add the second layer of paint (thin layer) and quickly drop the cartridge paper on top, press, and pull the printt, 50% of the time I only pull the fresh paint - it does not pull the dried first layer. Can't figure out what Im doing wrong. Do I need to let it completely dry before I pull the final print?
Absolutely, you must let it dry then peel off. If it feels damp, cold then leave it longer :)

Hi Nena, not sure. My local print shop printed the images for me on a laser printer / copier - the sort of copier you'd find in an office.
how long do let it dry for before pulling the print?
3 of 4 minutes, 10 if it's cold weather : ) If I transferring onto a paper that already has a layer of dry acrylic, I leave it much longer.

Absolutely! I kind of cover that in another video but printing scanned letraset onto tissue paper then adding that as collage. Your suggestion is great, thanks : )
I bought glossy laser printer paper and zero luck today. I’m sad.
the key is in the material I guess. I tried for an hour to transfer my digital line work printed out with a laser and the only thing that happened was that the paper sucked all the paint from the gel. It made me cry so hard. I think its the paper I am printing on
Try setting your printer / copier to print in colour settings, even if the image is black and white. don't use the grayscale or b + w setting. this, plus working quickly and using a thin layer of acrylic, has given me some really good results. check out my latest video where I discuss some of these things. no more tears dude!!!

So I just tried and didn't work out at all. It s still sucking all the paint 🤮 this isbso frustrating. I printed in bw in color mode, than painted the gelli with black acrylics and nope. No transfer happening. I tried transfering the print directly onto the plate and had some kind of ghost siluette but toblightvto work with...why the hell is it working for some and for other not ? What paper do use ? And is their a hack with the printer ink ? I don't get it
@@TheDudeway the same for me. NOTHING... And I have the same suspicion - it is the paper that I use in the printer. It sucks it all and leaves the plate perfectly clean.
@@TheDudeway found out in one of the tutorials to print 2-3 times on a bit heavier paper. I have to try it... but now off to printing with oil pastels and embossing technique! 🙂
Despite rigorously adhering to your process. - several attempts - I could not make it happen. I have been doing paper lithography instead.
So frustrating Aine. It is definitely a hit and miss technique and i don't have explanation as to why it works for me sometimes and others not!!!
