We have all enjoyed the amazing custom cars and inventions that have made their way into the Grand Tour over the years. But what you may not know is that most of the amazing Grand Tour and Top Gear contraptions were/are made in the workshop directly next to The Smallest Cog, Richard Hammond's classic car workshop. Mike Fernie heads next door to explore this treasure trove of engineering.

can you ask the guy at 14:31 how long it has been since he seen his own dk?
Man hearing this guy talk reminds me of my old Engineering Professor in high school. He was such a smart guy and managed to become a top chief engineer at GM but said he couldn’t stand how no one had a sense of humor and how corporate everything was. So he came back home and created the engineering academy at my school to help teach kids the passion of engineering. Man was that class fun
Respect too him
What a fantastic thing to do make kids get the bug for engineering
"It's like Pandora's Box of toys really."
I like to believe that Hadrian knew exactly what he was saying and said exactly what he meant there.
Ladies and gentlemen, the quintessential Brit.
Although this is very cool, I did prefer how on old top gear they would be more involved in the creations and although they obviously didn't do everything it was in the realms of possibility that they could have done it, idk I feel like it grounded the show more, gave the presenters more room to be passionate about their creation and the others too be more harsh on their opinions of the other presenters creations, making it funnier. Also the fact that most new modifications don't fall apart, so they normally just blow them up or something equally as unrealistic, which isn't as funny as the random stuff that would naturally or at least feel more realistic to happen with their bodge jobs.
Top Gear technology centre, gave us greats like Jeff.
everyone liked old top gear more.
@@andrewilliams3406 Jeff? Or Geoff?
I wasn’t sure Jeff felt right, you’re right though it was Geoff.
I agree, but I am more than happy with the direction they're going with occasional specials. But I do also miss the average car auto journalist bits.
That's got to be one of the coolest shops on earth. Constantly building one-offs is as fun as it gets.
Brings back Scrapheap Challenge memories watching this
I'm 90% sure I've seen Hadrian on that as a judge many times - recognise his name.
@@vilemeister as both a expert and judge. Always a great episode when Hadrian was involved
"We wouldn't be able to film in amazing locations like this without the sponsors..." Sure, the workshop next door is quite the travel XD
smallest cog, which Hadrian owns, Hammond rents the unit, several shows of smallest cog he seen asking how long building will take, it's about 12 miles from Hammond's home in ross on wye it's a bit of a castle
As much as I enjoy Hammond's show, a show on these guys would be even more awesome.
They could call it, "The Biggest Knobs"
but most of this guys projects are confidential for tv shows, movies, etc, so most of the footage will be pixaled objects
@@shalahuddinumar3386 No, they just have to wait until after the projects have aired. then they cans show how they were built.
@@Zundfolge maybe it's trade secrets as well, like how he didn't want to disclose the secrets of his vortex cannon. if they made a show exposing how they do everything, some other firm might look at it and give it a whirl themselves.
@@sneed472 I think he didn't disclose the details of the Vortex Cannon is because it's a large legal grey area.
I love this! I am a custom production lead welder at the shop I work at in Montana USA and I think this would just be an absolute dream job to be part of. I remember pausing the grand tour and looking at the metalwork on the trebuchet and zooming in on some of the welds. Really top-notch quality work! This is a great episode, thank you!
Hadrian is an interesting well spoken person. He needs his own TV show.
He has in the past. Scrapheap Challenge, etc
To be fair......
@@jimgamble4355 How many times did he say that!!😂😂

I’m a heavy hydraulic engineering mechanical specialist so I absolutely love shops like this 👍🏻 to the guys that own this business I applaud you as my dad started out aa a farrier and later went into heavy mechanical engineering, i would have never went into heavy engineering if he wasn’t involved In the same field
This man is a legend and an engineering inspiration. Please someone give him his own TV show!
Agreed.
I love Mike's enthusiasm, it's just so pure and real. This is such a great episode, I love seeing where some of these great ideas came from and how it works in the background. Absolutely great job!
Even though he doesn’t know anything...
@@sph_holl2650 great
What a guy! It's always amazing when someone has insane creative skills matched with endless technical ability.
I have been a farrier for last 34 years and now at 51 starting my own fabrication/engineering business and watching people like this I know I am making the right decisions. Keep up the amazing work and hope to see more soon.
Adrian is amazing, please put more of him on the channel. A proper engineering genius
I’m a big steam man myself and that Garret Traction engine is Beatiful!
Yeah we need updates on the traction engines over the upcoming months
Great episode Mike. Your absolutely killing it recently :)
Give that man a series, really enjoyed watching.
Very cool!! I hope you can follow the build of a future Grand Tour project. Brilliant guy Adrian.
Excellent video Mike. Really enjoyed it thanks.
This needs to be a regular series.
What a gentleman and a genius - thanks for sharing this.
Would love to see Hadrian do a project from start to finish. He is a very interesting chap who comes across as a great personality.
Outstanding content. Lots of knowledge... Thank you!
Hadrian Spooner! I remember him from Rebuilding Titanic!
Also, a steam buff, so big up on my list! At least I know who owns that Case Traction engine out in the yard now!
Absolute legend, glad he's still building and overseeing mad projects more than 20 years after doing the same and judging Scrapheap Challenge!
A brilliant man who makes a living by having fun all day. We should all be so lucky.
Loved the peek behind the curtain!
Really enjoyed that one. Looks like a great place to work as well
Pass the workshop most days. Amazing to see in person
Wow what an awesome machine shop! 💥👌🏼
Amazing place and great work they do daily hands on real engineering impressive
Wow! This is an extremely interesting company. I like how he said that no one in the workshop works on the same type of job twice.
So cool, just loved this film.
a lot of those vortex cannons near car production plants to prevent hail storms. because there's no indoor place big enough other than a massive outdoor parking lot to store new cars at. last thing you don't want there is a lot full of new cars with dents.😁
Wow I've just been taken back to my youth via Hadrian and memories of scrapheap challenge
As soon as I saw Hadrian I shouted out SCRAPHEAP CHALLENGE I did have to have a quick google to check but I love it when my brain works like this nice to know I'm more a fan of his work than just what I saw on scrapheap challenge
Can't wait to see that machine in action when the lads go to Iceland!
🤫😂
I would love to tour there. Amazing
What a great interview :)
Spoke to him many times when I have taken work there he is a down to earth guy and all this is done in my home city of hereford in Herefordshire
Love the paint job of the place!
🇺🇦
I would love to see more of this stuff, a drivetribe, spin on like US's ccc motorbikes, but with little man in a back-garden shed, which the gang, do so well, i think robinrelint-space launch, was, one of best, they did, with all the ins and out of the making not just lornch at end 🙂
Seeing this makes me proud to be from Herefordshire
hadrian spooner, what a legend! didn't know he was the man behind all those crazy builds
Of all the inventions and equipment Hayden has it’s the ERF EC11 Olympic that’s pulling the saw attachment for the steam engine that has interested me lol 🚚💪🏻💪🏻
This was amazing!
I like the guys sweatshirt! : I tried it at home."
If I had my time over I would have gone after working for a guy like him and doing full on engineering stuff
I do a lot of welding stuff but that is a whole next level of great fabrication 😍👍👍
Wow could listen to him all day proper intelligent bloke 👏
That Landy in yellow is awesome want it.
The cannons are used in Spain, I've heard them whilst on my farm but never knew how they worked.
Very loud indeed.
Loved this video !
I remember first seeing hadrian on scrapheap challenge when i was kid the guys an absolute genius
that is a proper workshop - the Bering Strait expedition vehicle is something we could use
would love to work there... and i have the skill sets to work there, which kinda makes me happy just by the thought
I like the "I tried it at home" hoody
Must be an awesome place to work!!
Super Cool, Love that steam engine stuff. Thought the tree comment was funny, I live in Washington St USA. size of that tree was nothing, We have 6-7-8 ft (1.8 to 2.4m) diameter stuff all over. HAHAHA. LOVE THE SHOW
Nice one Mike. 👍
Colin furze collaboration needed!
I bet you that man could build a wall like no other! :D
This guy is on my hero list along with Jamie Hyneman and Christian Von Koenigsegg
Pretty cool and totally different to your usual videos. Hadrian seems to be a really nice guy and I can imagine this Video could have been hours long just talking through various projects.
Brilliant video. Would love to see more steam on drivetribe.
i need to know where i can watch that landrover go from London to NY, i want to see that....
does anyone know ??
"Stuff we made for scrapheap" HANG ON HAVE I BEEN LIED TO
Love your work 👍
Can we get returns to this place every 3 months to see what is going on because this place looks like heaven
Wow, that ERF EC 🥰
That hidden item for the grand tour, possibly a combine harvester and a tie in with Clarkson farm? I know they did one years ago in the snow, but thought that the bit around 12:40 may have been part of the front?
Great video!
That was super interesting!! Hadrian - wahy a guy.
SERIOUSLY I WANT TO WORK THERE !!! Im in the US but if they would be willing to hire me id be 100% willing to move there ! I love that kind of stuff and building awesome devices and machines. And im also very clever in a workshop.
Beyond fascinating 👍
What a cool place
Colin Furze’s dream workshop!
I hope the blurred objects are grand tour toys. I would be excited to hear if they are filming more stuff.
Thats an impressive workshop, with lots of tripping hazards.
He is a legend.....
TBH Hammonds Workshop tv show didn't show Hadrian in the best light, nice to see my assumptions were wrong.
Any news about season 2 of Richard Hammond's workshop?
would it be possible to film it now and realease it, when the episode of the grand tour comes out?
another show coming up... thats all i need to know... happy days...
Love it!
Wonder what they’re making for the new grand tour Norway episode
Hadrian: "Unbelievably.. I started out as a Farrier.."
Mike: "Brain loading.......'Farrier not found' "
What a top bloke.
Anyone else wondering what they blurred out when they first started to show the shop at the start. For the ones that missed it. Go to 30 seconds in and look at the back. You will spot Waldo( blurred spot)
Yup this guy has the best job in the world.
This dude has built a factory made out of knowledge. And that's kinda beautiful.
Clarkson’s Farm: TIME TO SHOOT THE CLOUDS WITH CLOUDS TO STOP HAIL!!!
Does anyone know if the GT guys are currently out filming now? I presume JC posting pics from Norway (I think it was that) is what they're doing
Super cool.
Wow!
Signing off with "I've been Mike" just makes me wonder what his next form will be.
So Cool!
F23KING LEGEND best episode yet
So Hammond put a garage next to a garage that can actually do the work. Brilliant, really.
Two different garages entirely, they probably bounce off each other since Hadrian is Hammond's Landlord
