Everyone. Hate speech is whatever they say it is, which can include criticism of the government. Hate speech laws are anti-free speech laws
@J L Yes, slurs are offensive. But seeking to root out offensive speech has bad side affects in which mildly controversial topics are now considered taboo. Also, hate speech laws make it possible for the government to restrict criticism if they can get a vague interpretation of the law that can be used in a way so as to force political opponents to shut up
J L words do not oppress... they may offend. But they do not *oppress.* You’d do well to learn the difference.
Ironically, some will even accuse this video of hate speech.
Well, I have had to spend the last 2 hours in a safe space to escape those words of violence in the video. So its pretty much the dictionary definition of hate speech.
@@todds543 it is OK, we have psychotropic pills for this.
here, let me get a shovel....
open your mouth wide.....
That cuz it’s hateful!!! _So_ hateful, in fact, that upon completion of, this, disgusting, and very visceral, hate video, I went and off’d myself; just couldn’t take it anymore…. Not afraid to speak _my truth!_ 🪦
It'll be used against anyone that is currently against the powers in charge. It's thought policing by a different name and is inherently a terrible idea
I really don't understand how people can look at politicians and think "Gee, I wish they had more control over me. I trust them to make great decisions about what people can say."
they think everyone will agree to what they consider hate speech and who it can and can't be used against. Of course insulting anyone in a "protected class" (in the old days we called these privileged) is hate speech.
Same !! I never understood how people think the government can make better life choices for themselves as then they themselves can
It is truly mind boggling, Daniel… Truly!
I'm all for hate speech laws....as long as I get to pick what is hate speech.
Well put--if you are truely for free speech, it must include "the other guy"
Boycotting is not speech. It's an action.
Wearing a t-shirt advocating for a boycott is speech
We should not have the prefix hate added to speech or crimes. It is only an excuse to use the government as a weapon against people you oppose.
It's a pity common sense evaporated a long time ago.
Thanks trump! Yeah!!! Wind turbines give birds cancer!! Uh-huh, uh, yup!
Ryan X did you come here to embarrass yourself? Because it’s working.
Thanks for doing these videos!! It's important we have conversations about this. Unfortunately too many people don't understand how this can hurt people. As they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions!! Miss Lou in his red suit!! Hope he wears it tomorrow & adds a blue & white striped shirt or one with stars!! Best wishes
Thank you for this video. Well expressed with great examples. On other topics, Glen and I may have different points of view, but my world would be diminished if i could not hear competing opinions. We must not become like Europe.
I’m not exactly pro-hate speech laws, I just think people assume advocates of them of being dumb rather then treating them like people with a different opinion. If you want to tolerate different opinions, should that include ideas about hate speech laws?
But they are dumb, I know they're having a different opinion but that doesn't make it any less of a dumb opinion.
It's not a great comparison. Criticizing an opinion isn't the same as wanting to make an opinion illegal.
Depends what you mean by "tolerate".
Sure, it would be hypocrisy to try to shut down debate on HS laws. But that's not what this is, it is just a commentary, just part of the debate.
I also agree that personal insults are not particularly useful in a discussion but, again, that is not used in this video.
It is the IDEA that is being criticized. Which is exactly how debate should be.
One of the founding father's said polite speech needs no protection. The first amendment protects "hate speech". Aggressive speech! Speech is not assault. Assault is physical. so called "hate crimes" are bullish! A crime is a crime, hate makes it no more or less bad. If one person assaults another we can assume there is hate involved. Otherwise they would be nice and kind and unicorns would thrive on . These peaceful protests, peaceful burning, peaceful beatings, peaceful shootings (sarc) are all about hate. They can say hateful things, but when it turns to violence it is a crime. Yes a hate crime, a hate hate crime. Oooh the worst! No! just a simple crime which comes with a punishment. ( it used to) as with all children when they deliberately do what they know is a wrong/crime. And punishment (correction, of some sort ) does not happen, then they will escalate until they meet resistance stopping the bad behavior. No resistance = No stopping. The sky is the limit. Early stopping of bad behavior = less suffering for everyone. Boomer out!
Ken Vogler A hate crime is determined by motives, not just the level of violence.
Great channel
Hate speech is free speech, but spewing it may have social consequences
@@vitalsigns2679 no one wanting to be around you and no jobs wanting to hire you
Exactly!
All we need to know is that a guy trained his girlfriends dog (Pug) to do a Seek hail(if that's how they spell it) and he did this as a joke to his girlfriend who was on vacation for 2 weeks. Well he was Arrested and put in jail for this.
Count Dankula is still fighting the courts over this.
What's this guy's favourite basketball team?
The Clippers.
Sounds like the U.S.S.R.
You take their freedom to speak you simultaneously take my freedom to listen. I want to hear it for myself and to make up my own mind. How dare any of you think you have the right to take that away from me.
How could you say that?
Nice
We’re not changing anything
It's always easy to give freedoms for "protection", but it's near impossible to get them back afterwards.
Wow
So true! Government is NOT the answer.
Why would the 19 year old man parents be responsible for him?
Parents are meant to give their children guidance. You don't magically stop needing guidance as soon as you've whizzed around the sun 18 times. Anyway, it's certainly not the state's job to tell a person of any age what is or isn't appropriate speech.
@@ThinWhiteAxe You are probably the same kind of person also who thinks young adults still using bounce houses is okay too
I just don't get why Glenn and Sam Harris just can't seem to get along. I like them both.
It's a Statism (specifically: Zionism) thing. Greenwald likes Islam and Harris does not. Greenwald generally opposes the US government and Harris generally supports it.
It's also worth noting here that Greenwald -- very obviously -- privately regards Harris as a 'hateful' man who spews 'hate speech' ... and Greenwald has (allegedly, according to Harris) gone to insane lengths to try to drown out Harris's speech, defame him personally, etc.
Why are Natalie Portman and that dude on the left in the thumbnail?
The tricky exemption to free speech in the US is "incitement". I know Wikipedia isn't the most reliable but check this out:
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_free_speech_exceptions
I think that it becomes tricky to tell what is inciting/misinformation on the internet and what is just a person's opinions.
Wisdom exists
A lot of people are moving over to Parler. Mr Greenwald far more non lefties are arrested for hate speech in the UK. There are plenty of jew hatred comments on the internet that are still there after months. Everyone not left is called far right. Look at all the YTubers being banned. 99% of them are not left. How about focusing on them. Do you know about the huge rise in anti semitic attacks in the UK and in Germany too. How about a talk on that.
SCARY & VERY ORWELLIAN!
Sure! Seclude yourself DEEPER into your echo chambers and reaffirm your moronic ideals that the majority of humans don't!
Swell idea, ma'am, now go make my dinner before I punch you.
Whatever happened to “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me” ?
It changed to, "Nothing is more harmful than your words"
"Forcibly Silenced:" wHo wAnTs SoMe StItChEs?!?
If I hate everybody is that hate speech?
What would it silence? Everything. Also the person/group you LEAST WANT to do this will weld the power. Mark my words, you will regret it if you are for it. Hate speech is an evil that we can not allow to be. Freedom of speech is the only way. Wow what nonsense arrested for saying things? Fuck that shit! >_
How did people become so triggered?
America, our free speech must remain free. Unless you are calling for harm or destruction you have the right to speak your mind. If what I say offends you to bad for you. To me cancel culture should be considered hate speech or bullying. You should not lose your job because you don’t agree with the mob.
Unintended consequences...
Maybe the real hate speech are the friends we made along the way.
Protecting unpopular speech (now called hate speech) is the whole point of the 1st Amendment. People are free to express popular thoughts in every country. You can go to North Korea and praise the Supreme leader all you want, you can praise Allah as much as you want in Saudi Arabia, and Cubans under Castro were always free to voice their support of communism.
This video is hate speech, Now i fear for my life!!
its whatever **** decide it is
"Hate Speech" = I hate your speech.
... and I will smear, shame, and silence you to make sure you can never speak against me again.
@J L But oddly, it's Democrats and Liberals who are there demanding it. It's also liberal companies that are practicing it.
Truthate speech.
Euro bois are soon to be triggered
Citing a case from Great Britain is not germane to freedom of speech in the USA. I loathe what spews forth from some people, but I have to defend their right to say it. Be it Nazis or BLM terrorists, I defend their right to inflame, defame, and profane. For I know that if I do not, I will not be allowed to speak when I want to. It is a slippery slope when you label what someone says as "hate speech", as that allows the door to the trampling of one's rights to open. Though few recognize the danger, but when one right goes, they all go.
It will silence anyone who disagrees with the cult
I am disappointed that this isn't a comedy skit. Like, in the vein of, if they ban guns, only outlaws will have guns; if they make hate speech laws, it's not going to affect the people who don't really use hate speech to begin with, and the crazy radicals aren't going to stop just because of some law, you know? Well, I can't quite picture how to frame it, but that is what I was hoping y'all would figure out how to do.
Hate speech laws,...who will be Abigail?
I've been saying this for about 20 years... I was Born WAAAY too Late. Even so, I never Imagined that I would live to see the USA in This Level of Chaos... 😕

Greenwald is one of the few lefties with some sense.
Isn't Glenn a socialist? Wasn't he a cheer leader for both bernie and aoc?
Good. Let's leave our echo chambers and actually listen to some uncomfortable opinions in good faith to expand our understanding.
@@Talemix85 I'm losing my good faith with people like Glenn. I've seen tons of these progressive personalities who champion and excuse people like BLM and even antifa, but hold MSM and corporate dems to a higher standard.
Then let's respectfully point out those blindspots with facts that are incontrovertible and relevant, to them. Even if they don't change their mind someone listening might.
And we should welcome them in our chambers instead of shutting them down. Especially when ideas are unwisely conflated and short sighted. If we come to understand their issue without mere ridicule maybe we can even find better ways to help.
@@Talemix85 at a point very soon, those entering the chamber will be their with intentions to rule you. Not discuss it. It's not that we shouldn't challenge the ideas. We have reached a point where they are zealots. THEY know the truth! THEY see what's right. It slipped into becoming like a bad religion.
I commend your sentiment and at the end of the day, hope it is what works. I'm a pessimist through experience though.
