"The Devil in I" is about the changes and emotions the band experienced, when bassist and founding member, Paul Grey, died of a accidental prescription drug overdose in 2010.
The video is pretty much a visual representation of the way every member was changed as a person from the death of one of their best friends, as the band had been together, with no roster changes, for 14 years, since 1996. These changes to each member were irreversible to the point where after everything smoothed over, they were, in a way, new people. Hence the analogy of death. The death of the people they were before Paul Grey's death (hence the All Hope is Gone masks), and the "rebirth" into the people they are now (hence the .5, The Grey Chapter masks on the Slipknot jamming)

A lot of rock music, most hard rock and almost all metal particularly: is therapy in the form of exorcising one's own demons.
I don't expect anyone but metal heads to understand that a head of time, so if you're unaccustomed to this genre: with anything you hear from it - keep that foundational principle in mind and suddenly it all makes a hell of a lot more sense.

Why does Stephen King write so many horror novels? It's a way of expressing fear, anger, isolation, loneliness, etc. but do so in a therapeutic way. The darker and more intense - the greater the emotional release from watching / singing.
This song is actually not satanic, it's about overcoming your "devils", the things that you're afraid of basically. The song is also a tribute to Paul, a member that passed away.

I was way off then lol because I interpreted the Devil In I as an emancipation from the Illuminati, a rebelling statement that claims they won't succumb to them again. After already having lost bassist Paul Gray to a OD, about 3yrs later this song was released. I think shortly thereafter, Gabrielle, the youngest daughter of a slipknot member 'Clown' Crahan also died of an overdose followed by the sudden death of the goat, Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison who died in his sleep. Simply stated, in this song Slipknot says "im not your devil anymore" and in another song it's said "charity laced with a lie", "we'll never give in" and "you'll never ever take us alive". 🖤🖤🖤

I am a part of the “metalhead” community and I would say we are the most caring, connected, considerate, and loving people out there. We are here to keep and real. If I’m not mistaken the men in this video aren’t being vulgar they are showing their fears. This is such a well planned out, and important symbolized video/ song and deserves the best feedback because we can all admit that this song clearly shows that A LOT of work went into the video ,and song it’s self during its production.

What I love about metal are the instrumentals and it is great for getting through shit. Life is shit sometimes and it helps me cope when life takes a steaming dump on me. This is a great song about dealing with loss.

its all bout what the imagery represents in relation to the lyrical content. thats what ive always loved about metal music, 9 times out of the 10 the lyrics really make you think about whats really going on
