I've been saying this for years now, the lack of both integrity and self accountability in this hobby is ridiculous. I too buy and sell sports cards, not on the level that you've made it to but I treat each and every package i send out with the upmost regard, if I'm gonna take the time to do something, I'm gonna take pride and do it to the best of my ability, it's called honor and I think it's becoming a lost trait, sad to say. Here's an example, I just picked up a inexpensive RPA of Connor Wong, on card signature, 3 color swatch, and I was really looking forward to receiving it. Unfortunately the seller couldn't care less about proper shipping methods, and half assed it, wrong sized top loader, flimsy envelope, not a even a piece of card stock not even a team bag or piece of painters tape, just tossed in the envelope and nothing more. Card was destroyed crushed in several places and a complete loss. A little piece of tape or some added paper would have saved it. I'm not a fan of tape tho, I've started using these stickers that can be lifted of the top loader and put on another one with zero sticky residue left behind, they're the team logos and I think it gives my listing photos that extra little pop, they're also great with organizing and finding a card you're looking for without having to grab stack after stack and shuffle through every single one until you find it, which is time consuming and can lead to accidentally drops or damaged cards. Just one of the many little things. Sorry for the rant, but man, it's frustrating sometimes. Great videos btw, I will make sure I'm subbed and turning all notifications on.
A PSA employee tried to steal 8 of my cards. After 6 months I found the cards and the thief. My cards were sent back with the cert. #'s removed from the PSA registry. THIS HAPPENED TO ME. I was banned from PSA. Figures.
I don’t think I’ll ever do a deal that isn’t in person or uses a trusted third party. The fees are worth it for me. I’m too busy to worry about this crap
I don’t buy on Instagram or other platforms! About to quit buying from EBay because sellers got awful customer service ! Just going to do card shows ! I need peace of mind!
That ebay part hit me a lil. I try my best as a ebay card seller to send and take care of the folks who buy from me because its how I'd want it for me. Sorry you dealt with crummy people
Nick you are one of the few people I have done private deal with for this very reason. Anything of value (over a few hundred) I prefer to do the sale through eBay or Veriswap and eat the fees for the better protection. This is just a bad situation. I had a similar issue with a high value card I sold through eBay. It went through authentication, arrived at the person home, signed for and then they filed a claim with their credit card that they didn’t purchase. Luckily it didn’t cost me a dime.
@@andrewnull2594 🙏 I try and go above and beyond on deals. If this was me I would refund the whole damn thing. Agree that’s not necessary here, but my mentors over the years in cards have taught me to always make it right.
Interesting case. I'm not sure I _completely_ agree with the $600 refund. I think it'd be a nice gesture, but it's not his fault. That said, the idea of 'self-insuring' is interesting. I think if I were to do that (I don't really sell, and except for one case haven't sold anything more than $100) I would include in the original sale an add-on fee for such self-insurance. Or bake it into the sale price. I don't see how it'd be wise to just guarantee the shipment when the shipper could just rob you blind. I don't bring in enough money to be able to support a $600 payout. Of course, if you're doing deals of that size, it should absolutely be required that you discuss using USPS or other carriers' insurance. Or some other insurance. Even if neither seller nor buyer did anything shady, they're both out a minimum of $600. Both sides need to ensure they're safe there. Lesson learned, I guess.
I could underrstand if its a store or website that he bought from, but when you buy from a private seller, most times its a small-time person who is selling cards to further their collection. You can't expect a random person to pay for a theft that the mail carrier is responsible for. Imagine if it were a kid like 13 years old who sold it. You really expect him to pay for half of a package someone else stole?
@@Hoosierdaddyjones812 do we know with certainty that it’s the USPS? Or was it packed up like this? We have video of the reception, but we do not have video of the send - most likely it is the post office but at the very least, even if he shouldn’t pay half he shouldn’t go private on his Instagram account and should actually give a shit. I do appreciate your thoughts on this though. It’s important we discuss these things out in the open because deals do get screwed up.
@SportCardMadness i do agree that when he went private and stopped communicating, that's a clear sign of suspicion. I've had a box with about 3k worth showing up empty myself. One way to check for certain is the weight when dropped off versus the weight when shipped. My box was shipped at 2.1 pounds and was just box weight when I picked it up from the post office.
100% believe this guy, but an objective arbiter would not be able to resolve this. Videos can be edited. Extremely rare for USPS to even pay the insured amount!! If I'm the seller, after all of this, I would probably refund the guy $600 and then block him. Also, I only sell on eBay. Not perfect but much more of a trusted platform.
Good video and insights. I trust no one. IMO either side could be guilty and videos can be faked. I now sell most in person at shows or via a consigner. I admit both are challenging. I’ll try vaults more like psa and fanatics. I insure many big cards when shipping but I’m considered the hobby insurance that includes travel to shows and shipping all cards. Have you heard of this? Would you recommend hobby insurance that include shipping insurance?
Did the buyer file a police report, and did he do it the same day he signed for and empty box? Once you have a police report, you can contact PSA and have the cert number flagged as stolen. I don't see how the seller is the villain. He didn't do anything wrong. He's not the one who paid via friends & family. He's not the one who signed for an empty package. You say that he's now ghosting the buyer, but how many times do you need to tell someone the same exact thing over and over and over again? People save money doing deals on Instagram. There aren't any fees. It also doesn't generate a 1099K when it's done via friends & family. There also isn't any buyer protection whatsoever.
Important questions regarding the police report. Didn’t think of that. There really is no standard playbook that people all know to follow here. I don’t like the lack of communication and I don’t want someone like that to continue to do deals in the hobby … sorry.

As soon as I hear friends and family I cringe.
I’ve never bought a card virtually..Why not do goods/services get the card do a chargeback and then do friends/family ?
