@@Hexighost when my dad daied in 2011 my own aunts and uncles stripped out the copper tubing and siding in his house, he wasnt even passed a month and the only reason they were in the house is because they offered to help us clean out the house and pack up his things and some of mine and my sisters things. my mom and sister go to the house few days later and see walls destroyed and copper ripped out of everywhere they could find it, and siding on the house ripped off as well. it made us physically sick to see especially since we couldnt afford to renovate all the damage. luckily the neighbor has been wanting to buy the house for years and we were able to pay off some of the funeral expenses and bills we needed to pay. but yeah copper even in 2011 had high street value
The bosses for Dale clearly hate him and Im betting now (if they're alive) they regret blaming him. He was murdered by robbers and it's obvious. You don't walk away from your home life and family just because you're merely upset with your pay cut, especially at that age.
But it's not "obvious". He was, most likely, involved. The fact that the surveillance footage was left, in order to make it look like a robbery, is proof. The robbers clearly knew the building. Which means they knew there were cameras. Why would they not erase the footage to give the appearance that Dale did it? That makes no sense. It was obviously a show for the cameras.
I disagree. I've been watching true crime for a long time now and stranger things have happened. There's been many times a case may seem obvious but you get an update and it's mind blowing. Or for example the ppl that mysteriously disappear without a trace.. everyone will say "they would never have left their kids behind" and low and behold that's exactly what happened.

Jay and Tania: Solved. In 1990, police located the camera lens that belonged to Tanya's missing camera at a pawn shop in Portland, Oregon. However, the lens had originally come from another shop that did not have records from the time it was originally brought in. As a result, police were unable to determine who originally brought the lens into the shop. Several possible suspects were questioned in the case over the years, including serial killers Robert Yates and Charles Sinclair. Both were active in the Seattle area in 1987. However, DNA evidence from the crime scene cleared them of any involvement. The DNA profile also did not match anyone in police databases. DNA testing later determined that the evidence found at the crime scene did not match DNA recovered from the greeting cards. One of the things I liked best about UM was that they always made sure to tell the viewer what was real footage and what was re-created. That kind of transparency is missing somewhat these days. This was a top-notch television program and I feel so fortunate to have seen them as first-run shows when I was a teenager and young'un in my 20s. They don't make them like this anymore and probably never will again.

I was around 8 when this season aired and I remember fondly watching these with my grandmother. It's interesting to think that back then, being so inexperienced with life, the mysteries portrayed in these episodes seemed so limitless. Now, after going back and watching the episodes as an adult, it's great to see that (despite the ones that have been solved) they still manage to be unexplainable in some instances. This really was a great show! I also agree that we won't ever see television like this again.

why do they never mention that the robber clearly has something held against dales back most likely a gun, it's coercion obviously and maybe dale tried to escape or something and was killed, it's sad that people at the plant were so quick to throw this man under the bus

About Jay and Tanya's case: On 18 May 2018, Snohomish County Sheriff announced that William Earl Talbot, was arrested for the murder of Van Cuylenborg. On June 16, 2018, a second aggravated first-degree murder charge was laid, for the murder of Jay Cook. Talbott pleaded not guilty to both these charges. I'm old enough to remember watching the re-runs of old UM cases on Lifetime. I always doubted Kerstetter was involved from the info provided in this segment and the different articles I read. I think not taking his cigarettes is a pretty big clue honestly.

The police had a tip that he was killed and his body was thrown down a local well. As i understand it theres lots of wells and some of them are sealed so he will never be found

The fact that the dog only found Dale's scent ending at the tank shows that Dale was forced to do what he did... and that Dale most likely was threatened. Also, I highly suspect both it was an inside job.. and Dale was murdered and he was signalling for help in the look in the camera. Patrick Foley either has/had an issue with Dale.. or he had something to do with the theft himself. The fact the cops suspect that he was murdered over as part of the robbery, and that he had assets he could have dealt with his debts screams that he is innocent.
They actually released the real footage from the Platinum heist recently, it's pretty grainy and hard to make out which is why they had to re-create them.

The Francis Murphy orphanage story is really sad. So sad he grew up in various orphanages and foster homes and never got adopted. Also very sad that shortly after getting interviewed for his story he died. It doesn't appear that his sister was ever found and his wife died awhile back too. I am glad he got to share his story right before he died just really sad nothing came of it.
I think that whole orphan train thing was horrible, especially to separate siblings and not let them contact each other or keep records. I imagine there were kids taken into homes where they were treated like slaves, possibly abused.
The music and Robert Stacks voice talking about unsolved murders used to scare the shit out of me when I was a kid watching this with my parents. I believe I was 7 the first time I saw it. The music gave me nightmares but watching as an adult I'm kind of reliving some of my childhood through these episodes and the music is still creepy
The Ghost Lights of Marfa story scared me when I was little. I was afraid that I would see them in front of my window and that they were something sinister as I tried to sleep at night and thinking of them, I then couldn't sleep even though I live on the other side of the world. UM could do that to anyone. The sense of mystery surrounding them has always made them ever more fascinating.

My theory on Dale is that he didnt initially have anything to do with the robbery. It seems like he was a really nice and helpful man and he just went all out helping the robber and in the long run it ended up making him look bad. The robber used him for his knowledge, help and then was ultimately murdered. It sucks it awful and hopefully I'm wrong.

There is a question about the Kerstetter case that could help answer the question as to why he looked at the camera: was there another employee on duty who was keeping an eye on the surveillance cameras? The thing I am appalled by is how that manager said he was alarmed that Dale was missing, and then said that he was extremely anxious when he saw the masked person at the tank. Seems like he valued the missing platinum more than Dale’s life, and I find that appalling.

Times haven’t changed much unfortunately. Better screening now, but there are horrible people out there taking foster kids purely for the money. Look up the number of children aging out of the adoption system. Practically a miracle that older kids get picked.
Those were harsh days. These were children who were literally street children in New York City with nowhere else to go and no else in the entire world for them. It’s important to keep this in mind and have some perspective when people complain about how bad things are today and refer to bygone times as “the good old days.”

I thought the video footage seemed like the robber had one arm behind Dale's back, as if a gun was being pushed against him to force his cooperation with the robbery. Dale's knowledge of the facility would've been very useful to the robber, hence why he wasn't just shot on sight and left there.

On June 28, he was convicted of both murders. On July 24, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Based on genetic genealogy, William Earl Talbott II, 55, a truck driver, became the prime suspect. Police tested a paper cup Talbott had abandoned and found his DNA matched exactly. On 18 May 2018, Snohomish County Sheriff announced that Talbott was arrested for the murder of Van Cuylenborg. Talbott's parents lived seven miles away from the bridge over the Snoqualmie River where Cook was found. The case, and specifically finding the killer via public genealogical websites, was featured on a Season 4 episode of the Criminology podcast. The case was also featured on the television program Unsolved Mysteries. Legal Proceedings Talbott was charged in May 2018 for the murder of Van Cuylenborg. On June 16, 2018, a second aggravated first-degree murder charge was added for the murder of Jay Cook. Talbott pleaded not guilty to both these charges. He was held on $2.5 million bail and his trial was originally scheduled to take place in late March or early April 2019; it was then moved to June 3 but began in June 11 and ended on June 28 with Talbott being found guilty. He was originally eligible for the death penalty but due to Washington State Supreme Court declaring the death penalty unconstitutional, he was instead given two life in prison sentences and has since been moved to the Washington Corrections Center.Talbott is now trying to appeal his conviction.

I started watching this 3 hours ago and I’m now just beginning the orphan part because I’ve been researching poor Dale’s case since. My two cents but I imagine he was doing a normal shift, a thief shows up to rob the place and Dale was being made help until Dale recognised something about the intruder that made him realise it was a former colleague of his and they killed him then. It’s mad though that his body has never shown up. (My dad was a huge smoker too and I imagine he’d have left me and my sisters behind before he’d have left his big new carton on cigarettes so I really think he was murdered.
It's a fascinating case! Yeah, the whole thing, just leaving his lunch, his cigarettes, his car, not to mention his loving family. And never seen or heard from again. Maybe he was in on it and out there somewhere, but I tend to think he had no part in it or, if he did, he was double-crossed and, either way, killed that night unfortunately.
I think he was definitely killed. There's no indication that he hated his family so why would he abandon them. He would have returned after the Statue of limitations was up if he was still alive. And a pay cut, as upsetting as that would be, is not a strong enough motive to rob the place you've worked at for 3 decades and completely abandon your family and your entire life.

@@Hexighost when my dad daied in 2011 my own aunts and uncles stripped out the copper tubing and siding in his house, he wasnt even passed a month and the only reason they were in the house is because they offered to help us clean out the house and pack up his things and some of mine and my sisters things. my mom and sister go to the house few days later and see walls destroyed and copper ripped out of everywhere they could find it, and siding on the house ripped off as well. it made us physically sick to see especially since we couldnt afford to renovate all the damage. luckily the neighbor has been wanting to buy the house for years and we were able to pay off some of the funeral expenses and bills we needed to pay. but yeah copper even in 2011 had high street value

But it's not "obvious". He was, most likely, involved. The fact that the surveillance footage was left, in order to make it look like a robbery, is proof. The robbers clearly knew the building. Which means they knew there were cameras. Why would they not erase the footage to give the appearance that Dale did it? That makes no sense. It was obviously a show for the cameras.

Jay and Tania: Solved. In 1990, police located the camera lens that belonged to Tanya's missing camera at a pawn shop in Portland, Oregon. However, the lens had originally come from another shop that did not have records from the time it was originally brought in. As a result, police were unable to determine who originally brought the lens into the shop.
Several possible suspects were questioned in the case over the years, including serial killers Robert Yates and Charles Sinclair. Both were active in the Seattle area in 1987. However, DNA evidence from the crime scene cleared them of any involvement. The DNA profile also did not match anyone in police databases. DNA testing later determined that the evidence found at the crime scene did not match DNA recovered from the greeting cards. In August 2010, Victoria cold-case detectives finally identified the person responsible for sending the cards thanks to tips from viewers of a local TV show, "Washington's Most Wanted." The author was a Canadian citizen who was in his seventies at the time of his identification; he also had severe mental issues. He readily admitted that he was the author. Police interviewed him for several hours and determined he had nothing to do with the murders; he had heard about the story in the news. Because of the statute of limitations, he was not charged in regards to the cards.
In April 2018, Snohomish County investigators released a Parabon DNA Snapshot composite of the killer that was created based on the DNA evidence. Composites were made of the killer at ages twenty-five, forty-five, and sixty-five. As a result of the Parabon analysis, it was believed that the killer was a Caucasian male of European descent, with hazel or green eyes, fair skin, possible freckles, and possible male-pattern baldness.
Finally, on May 18, 2018, fifty-five-year-old William Earl Talbott II was arrested in Seattle after his DNA was matched to semen found on Tanya's body and pants found in the van. His DNA was also found on a zip tie in the van. Furthermore, a palm print found on the back door of the van was also matched to him. When the murders were committed, he was twenty-four and living with his parents in Woodinville, just seven miles from where Jay's body was found. Two years before the murders, he was convicted of misdemeanor assault.
The arrest was made thanks to genetic genealogy done by Parabon NanoLabs. They uploaded the crime scene DNA profile to GEDMatch and identified second cousins of the killer. Through this, they were able to create a family tree, which led them to Talbott's parents. They then tracked him down and were able to retrieve a sample of his DNA from a discarded cup. This same technique was used to identify the Original Night Stalker.
Talbott was initially charged only with first-degree murder in Tanya's case. However, in June 2018, he was also charged with first-degree murder in Jay's case. On December 8, 2021, Talbott successfully had his murder conviction overturned because of juror bias; one of the jurors on the case stated during jury selection that she was not sure if she could be impartial because of domestic abuse in her family. The court stated that they were not sure that the juror was completely free of bias when she made her decision in the case. The court decision is currently being appealed by prosecutors.
Sadly, Tanya's father William passed away on May 14, 1997, at the age of sixty-one, without seeing her case solved. Her mother, Jean, passed away on March 3, 2020, at the age of eighty-seven.

One of the things I liked best about UM was that they always made sure to tell the viewer what was real footage and what was re-created. That kind of transparency is missing somewhat these days. This was a top-notch television program and I feel so fortunate to have seen them as first-run shows when I was a teenager and young'un in my 20s. They don't make them like this anymore and probably never will again.

I was around 8 when this season aired and I remember fondly watching these with my grandmother. It's interesting to think that back then, being so inexperienced with life, the mysteries portrayed in these episodes seemed so limitless. Now, after going back and watching the episodes as an adult, it's great to see that (despite the ones that have been solved) they still manage to be unexplainable in some instances. This really was a great show! I also agree that we won't ever see television like this again.

The fact that the dog only found Dale's scent ending at the tank shows that Dale was forced to do what he did... and that Dale most likely was threatened. Also, I highly suspect both it was an inside job.. and Dale was murdered and he was signalling for help in the look in the camera. Patrick Foley either has/had an issue with Dale.. or he had something to do with the theft himself. The fact the cops suspect that he was murdered over as part of the robbery, and that he had assets he could have dealt with his debts screams that he is innocent.

The Francis Murphy orphanage story is really sad. So sad he grew up in various orphanages and foster homes and never got adopted. Also very sad that shortly after getting interviewed for his story he died. It doesn't appear that his sister was ever found and his wife died awhile back too. I am glad he got to share his story right before he died just really sad nothing came of it.
I think that whole orphan train thing was horrible, especially to separate siblings and not let them contact each other or keep records. I imagine there were kids taken into homes where they were treated like slaves, possibly abused.

The Ghost Lights of Marfa story scared me when I was little. I was afraid that I would see them in front of my window and that they were something sinister as I tried to sleep at night and thinking of them, I then couldn't sleep even though I live on the other side of the world. It seems like he was a really nice and helpful man and he just went all out helping the robber and in the long run it ended up making him look bad. The robber used him for his knowledge, help and then was ultimately murdered. It sucks it awful and hopefully I'm wrong.

Several possible suspects were questioned in the case over the years, including serial killers Robert Yates and Charles Sinclair. Both were active in the Seattle area in 1987. In 1990, police located the camera lens that belonged to Tanya's missing camera at a pawn shop in Portland, Oregon. However, police were unable to determine who originally brought the lens into the shop.
DNA testing later determined that the evidence found at the crime scene did not match DNA recovered from the taunting greeting cards. In August of 2010, Victoria cold-case detectives finally identified the person responsible for sending the cards. He is a man now in his seventies with severe mental issues. Composites were made of the killer at ages twenty-five, forty-five, and sixty-five. As a result of the Parabon analysis, it was believed that the killer was a white male of European descent, with hazel or green eyes, fair skin, possible freckles, and possible male-pattern baldness.
Finally, on May 18, 2018, a suspect was arrested in the case. Fifty-five-year-old William Earl Talbott II was arrested in Seattle after his DNA was determined to have matched semen found on Tanya's body and on pants found in the van. His DNA was also found on a zip tie in the van. A palm print found on the van was also matched to him. When the murders were committed, he was twenty-four and living with his parents in Woodinville, just seven miles from where Jay's body was found.
Investigators said that the arrest was made thanks to genetic genealogy. They uploaded the DNA profile to GEDMatch and identified second cousins of the killer. Through this, they were able to create a family tree, which led them to Talbott's parents. They then tracked him down and were able to retrieve a sample of his DNA from a discarded cup. A similar technology was used to identify the Original Night Stalker.
Talbott was initially charged only with Tanya's murder. However, in June, he was also charged with Jay's murder. He pleaded not guilty at a preliminary hearing. Investigators asked for anyone who knew Talbott around the time of the murders to come forward. Several of his former friends contacted police; they noted that Talbott had worked as a delivery driver in 1987. They confirmed that the route he took for his deliveries matched that of the couple's travel plans at the time.
Talbott's former roommate told police that he had seen a blue blanket in Talbott's home and car. This blanket was similar to the one found on Jay's body. The roommate also noted that Talbott had a tumultuous relationship with family members, was involved in drugs, and had personality changes when he drank alcohol. He also recalled seeing a bronze van outside of Talbott's home on a misty day in the fall of 1987. Finally, he recalled that Talbott had taken him to the same general area where Jay's body was later found.
In June of 2019, Talbott went on trial for Jay and Tanya's murders. His defense claimed that he and Tanya had consensual sex and that the couple were killed by someone else. However, prosecutors noted that it would not make sense for Tanya to have sex with Talbott since she was with her boyfriend, was in a foreign country, and was on her menstrual period. On June 28, he was convicted of both murders. On July 24, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

I rode the Bremerton ferrys off and on for most of my life. Erie seeing it here on this show. I can confirm they did film on a Bremerton ferry. I know that look any day.

Many of the children adopted from the orphan train were more indentured servants than family. James Whitcomb Riley's "Little Orphant Annie" was a about a railroad child.

Dale is a local hero and gone before his time. That boss is a terrible person for speaking Dale's name in vain. The man had a loving family and would not get caught up in a crime like this. How the boss can blame him for any ill activity against the company shows u how sick and greedy people like him are.

I thought the video footage seemed like the robber had one arm behind Dale's back, as if a gun was being pushed against him to force his cooperation with the robbery. Dale's knowledge of the facility would've been very useful to the robber, hence why he wasn't just shot on sight and left there.

the Jay and Tanya murders have been solved...On 11 April 2018, a composite sketch of the suspect was released based on the DNA collected from semen found on Van Cuylenborg’s trousers at the crime scene using a process called "snapshot DNA phenotyping" by Parabon Nanolabs. The case was also investigated by Parabon using genetic genealogy by uploading the DNA to the public website GEDmatch.com, the same site that led to the arrest of the Golden State Killer suspect Joseph James Deangelo junior. A second cousin, Chelsea Rustad, and another undisclosed distant cousin from the other side of the tree, were identified from GEDmatch. Based on genetic genealogy, William Earl Talbott II, 55, a truck driver, became the prime suspect. Police tested a paper cup Talbott had abandoned and found his DNA matched exactly.

I started watching this 3 hours ago and I’m now just beginning the orphan part because I’ve been researching poor Dale’s case since.
My two cents but I imagine he was doing a normal shift, a thief shows up to rob the place and Dale was being made help until Dale recognised something about the intruder that made him realise it was a former colleague of his and they killed him then.
It’s mad though that his body has never shown up.
(My dad was a huge smoker too and I imagine he’d have left me and my sisters behind before he’d have left his big new carton on cigarettes so I really think he was murdered.
I think the boss set it up. Clearly the thief knew the plant, so why leave the tape except as a way to throw off the scent from the real criminal.
It's a fascinating case! Yeah, the whole thing, just leaving his lunch, his cigarettes, his car, not to mention his loving family. And never seen or heard from again. Maybe he was in on it and out there somewhere, but I tend to think he had no part in it or, if he did, he was double-crossed and, either way, killed that night unfortunately.
I think he was definitely killed. There's no indication that he hated his family so why would he abandon them. He would have returned after the Statue of limitations was up if he was still alive. And a pay cut, as upsetting as that would be, is not a strong enough motive to rob the place you've worked at for 3 decades and completely abandon your family and your entire life.
That corporate shill did an awful job. Working slowly does not mean that you are going to steal from your company and disappear.
