As a black woman, the idea of people just finding out that beauty schools don't teach about black hair and some even basically outright reject models with this hair type to learn on, is such a foreign concept. Most black women basically a whole ass degree in hair just from the lack of education of professionals.

I close friend is white with very coily curls. She would have me put straighteners on it and flat iron it. Because we're both white, we have no idea how to take care of it. She moved away and shaved it.

On the flip side some of the shops that are black owned usually only work on their texture of hair and don’t know how to work on “white” people hair. No disrespect intended just saying what I have observed in my life. It’s great to have specialty knowledge though.

I went to cosmetology school 20 years ago and we still had to do many press & curl services with the scary ovens and hot tools. It was so weird they had us specifically learn that, but not more modern or varied services for more textured hair.
All in all, cosmo school isn't great for becoming skilled or specialized in your craft. That generally comes later

I remember realizing I had some minor crows feet at like 22. My mom immediately wanted to start buying me a bunch of creams to try and plump them out again and stop them from getting worse, etc. Told her idk I think the fact that I've spent so much of my time with my eyes crinkled up smiling and laughing that I have crows feet at 22 is something I'd rather celebrate than hide.

I went and watched the Dove commercial. I know it’s just marketing, but there is something truly empowering about seeing older women looking badass, creative, cool, confident, and unapologetic about their age. It’s kind of sad that we so rarely see this depiction when it lessens the fear of simply fading into the background as you age.

I am 30 and I have some wrinkles. I lost a lot of weight in a short time and my skin is more saggy and wrinkles are more visible. I already had a body dysmorphia and disassociated a lot when looking at my face in the mirror but now it's getting worse. Especially because I looked way younger than my age my whole life. But on the other hand people thought I was a young adult or a teenager and mistreated me a lot so maybe it will stop or at least lessen.
I also struggle a lot with mental disorders and I was suicidal for a long time. I wasn't sure if I would survive till 30. And I did. Now my next milestone is 40. Not that I will kill myself at 40 but it's easier to think about.

I went to beauty school in Washington state back in 1998. We had to learn how to apply relaxer and spent a week learning how to work with textured hair. The real problem is/was having customers come in with that type of hair to actually work on. A mannequin head can only go so far.

That's because 1) Black women have been burned too many times and have trust issues with most hairdressers and 2) people will offer black models with 4c hair for practice and schools will outright reject the offer, so when they get the opportunity schools are excluding them anyway.

When I went to cosmetology school- it’s likely more about the location tbh- we had approximately a 50% poc school.. but I live in metro Detroit. That’s the norm. So we naturally learned how to work with textured hair. Two of our four instructors were women of color- so it’s always been odd to me that hairstylists don’t know how to handle textured hair. I’m glad it’s finally being encouraged/part of curriculum.

As an elder gen z, (about to be 24), I personally hate when brands are obviously are " trying to carter" to us. They make it so obvious that that's what they're doing. And the almost always miss the mark because we know that what is happening. And we're always the generation that " going to save the brand". They make that clear as well. It's not actually complicated to get our attention imo. And brands would know that if they had more of that on their teams.

I am at the FTC part, and it would be nice if they actually enforced their rules. I have to weed through all the incentivized reviews to get to the honest ones. I have resorted to reading one and two star reviews before I think about buying a product. They don’t enforce anything, especially with sponsored content, unless it’s about sugar and aspartame.🙄

    • @cdlstoddard
      @cdlstoddard 2 місяці тому

A lot of the incentivized reviews come from Influenster, BzzAgent, and other reviewer programs that send out free products in exchange for honest reviews. I'm not 100% positive that people don't lie just to try to get noticed, so many people are mesmerized by PR packages and shit.. but even as someone who has always been honest on those reviews myself, I skim thru them & wait until there's real consumer reviews before I trust the rating system.

I'm getting there too but I try to avoid saying my age bc it feels awkward to be told I look younger (not me bragging; I'm in a creative field so it's an illusion). I do actually look my age. & I want that to be fine. But I also don't want to be that "compliment judo" person who makes someone feel bad for saying something our whole society agrees is a kind nice thing to say to older women. So I usually just joke + deflect, I'm not great at talking about it. I thought we'd value older women more by the time I got here. I can't control everything but I hope if I stay curious + learning + engaged with the world + people I meet in it, that might be a good foundation for aging well.

I went to Cosmetology school in Michigan in the 80s. We had textured hair care as part of the curriculum. I have textured hair. I think the problem is once students graduate, they fail to continue to have real life continuing experience with textured hair. In 1999, I went to a Hair Cuttery to get my hair washed and blow dried. I was a black woman with chemically straightened hair at the time. Once the stylist washed my hair, she and her manager informed me that they would not be able to use their combs, brushes and hair dryers in my hair per company policy. My hair was soaking wet and they told me they could do nothing more in front of all the other customers. They were apologetic and gave me a towel and escorted me to the door after accepting my payment for the hair wash. I was beyond embarrassed…felt so small and less than in the moment. Never went back to another Hair Cuttery. Glad to hear there’s progress in ending discrimination and segregation in the hair care services market.

@@EMILY4DAYS Hi Emily! Thanks so much for your comment and concern!🥰 I've actually been hella researching Avon since I saw this video and I'm actually so glad I did because I've learned so much about Avon and it's pretty much all great stuff! As of July of this year, Avon is completely cruelty free and they also have a few vegan cosmetic and skin care lines. They are committed to ethical sourcing like for instance Mica which can be linked to child labor in some cases but Avon does not. Also (This is the LG Avon in North America,( Canada and the US) which is now Korean owned). This is not the Avon that is in the UK which claimed chapter ll). With Avon you don't have to participate in the MLM aspect ( I don't plan to). However, I don't see a problem with some other hard working Avon rep getting a few bucks off of my sales or my purchases. Honestly I've been thinking about the fact that most of us are up in Sephora giving all of our money to LVMH. They're not cruelty free and they're owned by one of the richest people in the world, Bernard Arseneau. LVMH ownes so much of the stuff we regularly buy now like Christian Dior, Rihanna's Fenty Beauty, Givenchy, Guerlain, Fendi, Benefit, Loewe, Celine, Marc Jacobs and I can go on and on. Truthfully I'm sick of giving all my cosmetic and fragrance dollars to ONE COMPANY. And in the world of drug store cosmetics there are no real answers either. I have honestly found that Avon is a pretty cool company and they were one of the first around having started in 1886. I also want to say that when I was younger I worked both behind the counter in cosmetics for Dior, and was a promo rep for Guerlain also. I do have a history with this stuff and I think Avon is in a great place to change a lot of people's minds about their products. They've changed mine! 🤣😂🤣 Anyhoo, thanks again!

I really dislike this obsession with telling 20 year olds that they have to start anti-aging prep now. When i was in my 20s all I did was wash my face, use an exfoliant when I needed to cus I had dry patches and my makeup needed to sit better (also to help with acne), and wore sunscreen cus I'm pale as hell and skin cancer runs in the family. That's ~basically what my routine is still today in my early 30s, I alternate the chemical exfoliant with minor retinol to help that acne I still get and it's sunscreen every day. Don't use collagen, don't do that weird shedding thing people do where they tape their entire head up at night, i just eat decently and drink water. You'll be fine kids aging is a privilege.

Happy Sunday I hope everybody is having a good weekend. I imagine with the FTC it’s incredibly hard to monitor and control all of the influencers and everyone across the Internet perhaps if they just go after the brands and make them more accountable across-the-board not only including this topic, but a lot of this will stop. Thanks for always being authentic and honest Jen

I'm still a Neutrogena customer. I'm also an older millenial and I've also gotten my kids to start using face wash as well. My oldest is almost 11. Now their face moisturizer is from Duke Canon and has sunscreen in it. I know it doesn't replace full out sunscreen on their faces, but i have a hard time getting them to wear sunscreen

Regarding the regulations on skincare for kids, I partially agree and partially disagree.
I agree parents should be guiding their children and observing their interests, behaviors, and concerns.
I agree that accurate scientific information should guide our policies. A good example of bad legislation here in CA is requiring a certain red food dye be eliminated from food even though it's perfectly safe. CA was so proud of this because now it'll force companies to reformulate to sell in the U.S. We have plenty of actual health risks we need legislation for, but thank goodness skittles will have a different red dye that maybe hasn't been used or tested as long. *Slow clap*
Where I disagree is that the companies are not responsible for their marketing. To speak to an issue you raised in this video, preying on people's concerns about ageing, by using ageist tactics to market to young adults, isn't okay. They should be accurate in their marketing. If it's not ok to use these tactics on 25 year olds, I don't think it's ok to use them on teenagers. Even if the parents are managing what their kids are buying, those messages are still seeping in and creating a false "need" for these products in the eyes of the teens.
Therefore, I think it would be reasonable to create regulations about how companies can market to kids. It's similar to regulations we have for marketing flavored vaping products. Even when the companies try to pretend they're not marketing to kids, but we see the negative effects, we do something about it to keep kids safe and, hopefully, get them to a healthier adulthood.

Love Jen❤ I do disagree abt Neutrogena. I saw the ads and thought of them as informative (but not educational). We all know as adults we lose collagen and we chase that firmness infinitely. If I'd been taughy earlier in my 20s I wouldve done more. Just my 22 cents. And by the way, most beauty products kinda over-promise under-deliver

you are right, buy dont you also feel like all the brands nowadays are talking about losing collagen like the end of the world and making a huge deal about it just to make a quick buck? just to say "ugh aging is ewww" or whatever. they could have done ANYTHING to talk about the collagen thing but they chose this route. idk i feel like it's a little misleading honestly. saying that as a huge neutrogena fan myself

As a Puerto Rican woman, I can attest to the fact that we have to find specialized salons for our hair. I have 3b curly hair, which is like in the middle of the hair texture spectrum, and even that most hair stylists can’t handle.
I went to a salon in CA while vacationing and she knew how to handle my hair and when I expressed my surprise she said that when hired they have to take extra training the corporation provides.
It’s nice they’re making this legal requirement. Minority groups end up having to spend extra money because the schools don’t teach textured hair and we can’t just go to our nearest xpress cuts or cheap Walmart salon

Thank you for pointing out that collagen in lotion doesn't increase collagen in your skin. I have a genetic disease that messes with my collagen production and the number of times people have said "just take collagen supplements and use collagen moisturizer" as if that would be the cure is baffling. Putting collagen on your skin doesn't give you back collagen that you've lost and also AGING IS FINE. Try to look like the best version of the age you are ffs.

I'm 27 now and my all time fave cleanser is that Hydroboost cleanser and it has been for years now! its got the same selling points of CeraVe (fragrance free, gentle but effective, inexpensive) but for me Neutrogena is way less irritating. it's a bummer hearing they're going the ageism route because so many of their products are simple problem solvers that people of all ages can use and enjoy.

Hi Jen, when I went to cosmetology school in New York, we had to learn how to cut textured hair is a special way of doing it in order to pass our state boards that was back in 1983. They are behind the times. Neutrogena is too expensive. I can buy oil valet. I can buy the other brand and drugstore cheaper than I can buy Neutro. It was a six-year-old on TikTok using retinol before she went to school on her first day of school had her nails done and everything. Where is her mother.

Tons of parents abdicated taking responsibility for making sure their kids were safe long ago. For instance, suing a restaurant because their kid was hurt while they let them run all over the place. Getting up in arms over kids watching inappropriate content because they aren't checking what their kids are watching or setting parental guards. I could go on and on. So thinking Sephora should make sure their kids can't buy anything that could harm them is right in line with all the other neglect parents have exhibited for decades.

Education on textured hair should be mandatory everywhere.
I have only started embracing my natural type 3 hair under 2 years ago. I spent decades punishing my hair with heat tools and chemical straightenings.
And yes, now having a curl specialist cutting my hair does make a huge difference.
I do advocate for daily SPF application, I do love Neutrogena's Hydro Boost and I did not get onto actually worrying about my aging skin until turning 41...

Tying in another subject that’s recurring on Jen Luvs, I was raised by my grandmother and in the last years of her life she lost a lot of her money to an MLM who does weight loss and health products (if you know who they are you can guess right it away it’s a big company) a woman with a wildly successful and accomplished life, a strong feminist active in the ERA campaign and who never took crap from anyone fell victim to an MLM from a combination of their “run your own business” marketing tactics and her own self-consciousness about being overweight. I makes me happy to see Dove out there fighting the stigmas that hurt my family dearly and plague people to this day.

I agree with Sarah Millican's take on aging: "fuck you, aging is a privilege, and not everyone gets the chance." The way I see it, there is only one alternative to aging, and that is premature death. Take care of your body and your skin and hope that one day you get to look back on many decades of life, having become an old prune. Not everyone makes it that far.

I went to cosmetology school for about 3 months, about 12 years ago and I don’t remember learning anything about textured hair. In the state I live in, we had to have more hours than even California. So one would think some of those hours could have been devoted to learning about textured hair. I dropped out when my job needed me full time and I realized I didn’t like touching other people lol. Should a thought of that before I enrolled. Glad they are financially teaching how to work with ALL kinds of hair. Long overdue. Also, I remember that Johnson & Johnson did something shady and split up their company when the lawsuits started happening so maybe Avon is doing something similar. Idk.
