heading out now to just prune this time but thanks for encouraging. Me to cut it back when needed and to feed them.I chose Purpleish this time, I never new till now they have more life if I take care of them, Thanks I will be ordering some seeds Take Care.
My son gave me mums for Mother’s Day and I had no idea the blooms would come back but they just started blooming again! This video popped up in my feed and I was stoked because I definitely want to keep them alive for as long as possible since my son is now away from home serving in the Air Force and they are very special to me! So thank you for these great tips!!
My selling point working at the garden center, Mums are worth your money if you just take care of them. Chop em down just above the soil after the bush spent, mulch, demulch in spring, and maintain until season
Thank you! Very helpful. Now I know how to keep up the care for our mums we've just purchased, so they can thrive year after year and save money in the long run.
Glad it was helpful! I LOVE hearing this!!! If you have found my videos/comments helpful, please like/subscribe, if you have not already! (I can't always tell). CaliKim
You just inspired me to trim back my mums! I love mums in the fall and this will be my first year of severely trimming them back as you showed. I normally just dead head as they die...let's see how they do!
I plan on cutting back my mums today for the winter, so they bloom again in 2025- I have a yellow, plum and 3 lavender colors. I love mums. thanks for this video.
I bought this huge, beautiful yellow mum at a market and 2 days later it died and I was so disappointed. My neighbors or even the houses I drove by still looked full and vibrant so I started thinking negative things like what in the world is wrong with my house and my plant? It really bothered me. Watching this has given me hope and I'm going to see if I can revive it! THANK YOU for this.
I cut back most of my mums yesterday. This will be my first year overwintering them. I'll give them fertilizer like you recommended. Hopefully the grow lights in the garage will bring them back to life. You're video was perfect timing. Thanks for the info. I'm up North a bit from you, near Seattle.
Thank you Kim for this because I trimmed my mum's back but wasn't sure if that was correct or not. Not that you have confirmed that was the right thing to do, I'm more confident that they will rebloom. Also, didn't know about fertilizing them, so I will do that now. Thank you so much for this video!
Hi Natacia - you'll be amazed at how they will rebloom, esp in a southern climate with mild winters, mine grow very well all year as long as I keep them trimmed. Thanks for stopping by!
Hi, I appreciate this video because I am a new worker, flowering plants on the job. I wondered why the new chrysanthem flowers were browning while the other flowers planted were flourishing a bit in their elementary growth. I know now to cut off the dead brown leaves to encourage new growth as I have planted them in their new home on the side of my boss's office. 🌺 Thanks again, for I am going to love watching them stay beautiful all year round!
Thank you. A family member gave me a partial brown mum. I wasn't sure what to do with it. I will trim it back & give it some fertilizer. Hopefully this does the trick. 😊
Thank you for this video on cutting back chrysanthemums! I live in NW Florida and purchased a blooming mum last September. It bloomed and bloomed and bloomed and bloomed all the way until June. I watered it regularly, fed it once a month and deadheaded regularly. Once it stopped blooming it looked rough. I cut it back really drastically and I noticed little black bugs so I sprayed it with Dawn and water. I thought it would die! It didn’t! It came back strong! I hope it blooms again. I think this one is called a Florist’s Daisy 2. The blooms are light orange, large, multilayered and flat with a dark center. I love her! She lives on my screened in porch.
It sounds like you're doing a fantastic job caring for your Florist's Daisy 2! The fact that it bloomed so long and came back strong after a drastic cutback is a testament to your attentive care. With the right conditions, you might see it bloom again this season. Keep up the great work, and that screened-in porch sounds like the perfect spot for her! How fun! CK
Great video. So now I know how to keep my beautiful mum’s growing, I thought they were gone but again now I know what to do, as I said to keep them going. 🥰

Kim I always wondered when the best time It was to give your mums a hair cute I think someone told me to wait until late summer of course my mums are first year plants
Fixing to prune my new daisy mum (hospital gift from my daughter) they got raggle taggle from being outside in the cold. 🙁 They are burgundy colored. And looking forward to using your tips to bring them back to their beautiful color!
It's June 22, I need to trim my mums back. Not sure how far back to cut them. A lot of them have little buds on them now. Also the best time now to cut them back for fall blooming.
Nice video. And you have beautiful eyes. The tip for cutting entirely back is for perennial mums, correct? As I understand it, there are both annual and perennial types? 🤔 Where I live, most people only have the annual type that garden centers sell in the Fall. 🏵️🌻🍁🍂
You could cut the annuals ...but they may not rebloom because of the winter temps. Heavy mulching may help keep them warm but it all depends on how cold you get out there! I sure hope this was helpful !! CK
You’re absolutely right! Phosphates are key for flower production, root development, and overall plant energy transfer, while nitrogen is essential for lush, green foliage. Balancing these nutrients can help ensure plants grow healthily and achieve the desired blooms or leaf growth. Thanks for highlighting that - CK
Thank you so much for this easy tutorial. Now i can trim my mums properly for continued enjoyment. Im not a green thumb, and watching vids with too much detail just depresses me🤣
Thank you for this info I have yellow mums and purple mums I really didn't know much about mums I planted them last week not knowing how they would do but they are blooming I'm in zone 9 Texas. So I appreciate this information Thank you.❤️
I planted my only mum that survived in the ground early this year after our February deep freeze. I live in zone 9. I had trimmed it back heavily after it gave the last blooms and it’s been doing good so far. I have yet to give it fertilizer as I wasn’t aware what kind. Hopefully they will survive till next year so I can fertilize it properly.
In Wisconsin, it's generally recommended to prune mums in the spring, around late May to early June, once new growth has started but before flower buds form. You can prune them back to about 6 inches above the ground to promote bushier growth and more blooms. I hope this helps, thanks for watching. Thank you for following and subscribing if you have not already! CaliKim
Thank you for the tips! I work in a greenhouse and planting the mums are my favorite season for work! I have a hard time picking a favorite so I end up getting one of each color! Unfortunately, since I live in Canada they don't always come back...
Hi KM - lucky you working in a greenhouse around all those plants. Bet that is nice in the Canadian winter to keep your green thumb happy. Yes, Canada is a little far north for them to survive the winter, but it sounds like you have a fantastic selection to choose from when it is time to plant them. Enjoy! Thanks for stopping by!
I'm guessing you're in Tn or some other southern state. I live in south central Indiana which is zone 5. According to the pros we should not cut back the mums as you were saying. The pros say leave the plant as it is and mulch it heavy as the old flower stalks and stems will help insulate the plant and will help it over winter.
I'm wondering if do you do the same thing for inside plant it's been doing real good even though we're not in someone gave it to me and I've been trying to keep it alive in the darkest room that I what do you think will it keep going if I maybe somebody can plant it next year
Yes, you can pinch or pull the spent blooms off mums by hand, just below the flower head. This technique, called deadheading, encourages the plant to put energy into producing new buds rather than seed development. To encourage a second bloom, try to remove the entire faded bloom, including the small stem attached to it. Regular deadheading, along with a bit of water and sunlight, should help extend the blooming season, allowing you to enjoy those vibrant fall colors even longer. CK Thanks for commenting, watching and subscribing
I live in Michigan and brought my mum before it started to snow. Do I still “chop it off” once it’s done blooming? I’ve had new cloth already start and to the height of the original plant
ok thats what i needed to know, i planted a bunch around halloween and thought i'd have to toss em and replace for spring and they grew new green and i cut out the dead stems and most of them came back thick. but starting to look dried out now in june. so I guess i'll do like u said and just hack them down to 2in and hope they come back for another bloom. right?
@CaliKim29 well since my first comment I have cut them down to 2in a few times, the first time 4 of the 6 came back and bloomed the other 2 just were green. 2nd time I see a few green leaves on half but the rest seem like dried out stems. I heard wild mums spread like wild fire. Gonna but 6 more now (oct) and try again
Thank You. Always read heading. And will be cutting them back in the next few days. I have them in grow bags. WHEN A FROST COMES SHOULD I COVER THEM? They have to stay outside. But I keep them now under the eave.
Hi Amber - glad you're enjoying your mums! If you live in a cold winter climate, mulch them heavily once you cut them back. They should be OK in a sheltered location under your eaves. Thanks for stopping by!
I'm a mum newbie but been learning a lot on UA-cam about them. So I bought a orange one and 2 burgundy about 4 weeks ago. I put them in big pots in my front entrance. The first thing I did before I planted them was get cuttings LOL. Iam in 7 b North Georgia , we had a mild winter last year. My burgundy's in the front it don't look like there's no more blooms. You think I would get more blooms if I scalp it? What temperature do they quit blooming? And if I leave it in the large container will it come back when it goes in dormancy? I'm guessing that container size is about the equivalent of a 7- 10 nursery pot
The rain laid mine over in the middle and some are long.. only had a week from store. Brought them in porch to dry some cause rain is going to get heavier. Should I wait to see if they lift back up or trim?
It’s good that you brought them onto the porch to dry out a bit. If the stems are still green and flexible, give them a little time to see if they lift back up after drying out. Plants often recover from rain once the soil dries, especially if they’re not too damaged. If some stems don’t recover and are bent or broken, it might be a good idea to trim those back to prevent disease or rot. But otherwise, waiting a bit to assess the situation is smart. 😊 What kind of plants are they? Kim
My mums are green, big and rounded but are not blooming. Just sitting there it seems. A couple of them have a few blooms near the bottom underneath. It seems they should be blooming now with days in lower 70’s and nights in the 40’s. In zone 8a.
Thank you for this video, I was just wondering about the pruning. Will mums multiply over the growing seasons or is it worth it to just buy the bigger plants to start out?
Hi Shara - mums can be propagated by division and cuttings. Divide mums in as new growth begins to appear after pruning (spring in cold winter climates, can happen in winter here in So Cal. Dig up the entire plant and divide it into clumps and plant is separate containers or spread out in your garden beds. Each division should contain several shoots and a portion of the root system. Cuttings can be rooted in water, or in a small cup with soil. It's a great way to get free mums! Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks for sharing your video with, my wife loves mums but up until now she had no idea how to prune or that they’ll come back year after year! I’ve been trying to tell her how so I had her watch your video and WAHLA she got it!! Now it’s to convince her to repot her mums or put them in the ground. We live in S. La. so pretty much everything grows well. I’m the bonsai guy in the family.. lol

Hi Kim. Where do you suggest that I store my mums over the snowy winter months? Keep in their pots or the ground? In garage?
In zone 8a.
Do mums have a good smell to them ?
Mine never re-bloom. The tiny buds never open.

@@CaliKim29 thank you for this advice, Very easy to follow! I’m always excited for free plants and it’s so rewarding too.
I’m the bonsai guy in the family.. lol
are you talking about chrysanthemums? what the hell is mums?
