Mike Rutherford said that it is about time travel. He had this to say:
"It's about a guy who's traveled light-years away, out in space somewhere, and he's ahead in time. Therefore he knows what's going to happen to his wife and kids back home, on Earth."
This is coming for all of us,..soon.

Intetesting fact: This song is about a man who is traveling through space and ahead in time, and knows what will happen to his family back on Earth.

This song has a Terminator vibe to it, with the father sending a message from the future back to his son - a pretty clever bit of songwriting on the part of Mike Rutherford and company. These guys were a woefully underrated band with two stellar lead singers both named Paul - Carrack singing this one and Young who sings another outstanding song, "All I Need Is a Miracle." They are a worthwhile band to dive into for sure. Great reaction.

This song, full name, "Silent Running, ( On Dangerous Ground )," was written based partly on a Sci Fi movie called Silent Running starring Bruce Dern from 1972.
Michael Rutherford said this is about a guy who's traveled light-years away, out in space somewhere, and he's ahead in time. Therefore he knows what's going to happen to his wife and kids back home, on Earth. And he's trying to get the message to them to say what's going to happen, the kind of anarchy, the breakdown of society, to tell them to be prepared

I always pictured this song as being a spooky, eerie, hopeless last-ditch effort of a soldier to try to help his family survive after a nuclear apocalypse. In my mind, I see them running around the desert on a moonlit night after some of the radiation has dissipated, trying to get away from the enemy soldiers who are coming to capture them after the nuclear war. It's really sad and frightening, because that's what could happen if the world's politicians don't stop their madness.

He knows the music "formula" much like the band, the cars, u2, styx, and journey...Look forward to what they say about all I need is a miracle, and then the third song too...Mike Rutherford is hugely underrated almost like he's been held back from doing his most wonderful work, but home by the sea by Genesis is a decent example, as well as my taste, So I enjoyed your comment, because I feel like with Genesis, he didn't get any credit he should have, from the start, so he created a new band, where he was, as well, as all the mechanics too! That is what I would have done as well, hence Mike and the mechanics.

Speaking of that wonderful lead singer, It's Paul Carrack...You heard his magnificent voice(and cadence) in Ace's "How long", Squeeze's "tempted", and in the former MATM song you reacted to, "The living years". He had a long and successful career, both solo and as a part of different bands, and as somebody else here mentioned, still tours today.

Thanks for playing one of my favourite song guys!
Mike Rutherford,( of Genesis fame) the "Mike" of Mike + The Mechanics, wrote this song with the Scottish musician B.A. Robertson, his frequent collaborator. "It was really about time travel," Rutherford said in a interview. "The story is about the idea that this father of the family is ahead in time, so he can look back and see what's going to happen in England, and it's not good. He's trying to get a message back to his family to warn them that the impending disaster is coming. Hence the line, 'Can you hear me, can you hear me calling you?'" Source - Songfacts.

From wiki: “According to Rutherford, the song is about a guy who's traveled light-years away, out in space somewhere, and he's ahead in time. Therefore he knows what's going to happen to his wife and kids back home, on Earth. And he's trying to get the message to them to say what's going to happen, the kind of anarchy, the breakdown of society, to tell them to be prepared.”

The stranger who gives the key in the beginning of the video is an actor named Billy Drago. Once the two of you get around to watching "The Untouchables" with Kevin Costner, Mr. Drago will play a prominent role in that movie.
This is one of the best songs by Mike + the Mechanics, along with "Living Years" and "All I Need is a Miracle."

The "Mike" of *Mike and the Mechanics* is Mike Rutherford who is a founding of Genesis (along with Peter Gabriel and keyboardist Tony Banks).
Phil Collins was the second drummer for Genesis and and became the lead vocalist after Peter Gabriel left the band.
Early Genesis is full of incredible music but maybe it is hard to react to because many of the songs are 10, 12 or 25 minutes long. Some reaction channels have reacted to a song called "Supper's Ready" which is considered by many people to be the ultimate Progressive rock song. It's worth checking out if you have the time

Omg.....YES...YES...YES!!!!!!!!! I was soooo happy to see you both react to this song!!!!! This song with the keyboards and the soaring melody and the the way the lyrics and music just make you sway back and forth in your seat.....it is music royalty!!! I have been dying to see someone react to this amazing song from the 80's.......I am so happy that you did and that you loved it as much as I did as a teenager when it first came out! When they went into the chorus I saw you both start swaying side to side in your seat and I knew you were getting it the same way I did all those years ago! It's one of those 80's songs that really takes you for a ride and is complex and well orchestrated to make you feel....makes your body move without even knowing it is. Thank you sooo much for your reaction to this song....I feel it's an undervalued gem from the era that deserves a new and fresh audience to hear it and experience it. This is so nostalgic for me and to see it given a new light and a new ear to hear it....well......I am just speechless!!

Thank you, guys, for doing one of my requests :D This is one of my favorites from them. "All I Need Is A Miracle" is another favorite. Mike Rutherford from Genesis put this band together. The actor who said "Hello, Tommy" is an actor from the 80's and early 90's named Billy Drago, he played a really good bad guy in films. Paul Carrack went solo and did a song called "Don't Shed A Tear" after this band. "Happy Birthday To Me" is a scary yet awesome classic horror film from circa 1981 that I hope you react to this Halloween. For Valentine's Day, I recommend "My Bloody Valentine" (1981). Btw, spoiler alert, right at the end of Silent Running, it goes straight into All I Need Is A Miracle.

I am certain that others have mentioned this to you, but "Mike" of the Mechanics is Mike Rutherford, founding Bass-guitarist of my favourite Progressive Rock band, Genesis. One of their grandest songs, and a great example of Mike's prowess with the double-neck bass / 12 string guitar, is "A Firth of Fifth". A piece of music as proud-sounding as any classical composition.

As many have mentioned, Mike Rutherford is also a founding member of Genesis. What I haven't seen anyone mention, however, is that Mike Rutherford was the primary lyric writer for the Genesis songs 'Land of Confusion,' 'Follow You, Follow Me,' 'Turn It On Again,' and 'Dreaming While You Sleep.'
A lot of people give Phil Collins a lot of credit for Genesis' success, but Rutherford has had a big role to play in it as well.

Paul Carrack recently did an interview on a different UA-cam channel where Silent Running was the main focus. This was banned in the UK during the Gulf War soley for the mention of the gun and ammo lyric. Carrack was asked to do a demo of sorts for this song and the only lyric they had at the time was "can you hear me? Can you hear me running?" They had him as lib it a few times and asked him back the next week to record the vocals.
