    Quokka Soccer was our running joke when I was a youngster going to Rottnest in the late 70’s, early 80’s. No, we didn’t actually do it…lol.. IIRC The Island is named after them. It’s of Dutch origin. Basically “rats nest” as the Quokka’s were thought to be large rats by Dutch explorers. When you’re camping there, the Huntsman spiders were more worrying in the tent than a fuzzy marsupial, who might try and steal some leftovers…lol

    Stephen Catwell, acting supervisor of zoology and quokka species coordinator at Perth Zoo in Australia, told Africa Check that while macropods may have their joeys, or young, fall out of the pouch, “Quokkas don't toss their babies at predators so they can escape, not only are they quite obviously physically incapable but Rottnest Islands Quokkas they have no predators"

    • @BizarreWildlife
      @BizarreWildlife  11 місяців тому +5

      Correct!!
      It’s not that they throw them at predators is that while the mother is escaping, the Joey may fall out and like you said, oblivious to the situation that accrued.

    Oh my goodness, those smiles! They really are adorable! However, I also very much appreciate you reminding us to respect them and give them space rather than crowd them for a photo and treat them as toys, especially given how trusting they seem to be. Your channel is great and I look forward to to the next critter you'll introduce us to!

    It sounds like that, if given sufficient time, these little marsupials might evolve a digestive system similar to placental ruminants. They already give their food a pre-chew soaking in digestive juices before mastication- this might give zoologists insight into how animals like cows and sheep evolved into the forms we know today!

    Mmm, Rottnest island sounds like the perfect place for a honeymoon. If the island has difficulty attracting many tourists, they might want to consider a name that doesn't imply that baby demons and hellspawn are birthed there. I'm just throwing the idea out there.
    For instance, take Los Angeles. One of the most gang violence and crime ridden cities in California, yet its named "The Angels" to trick people into visiting.
    By this same logic, Rottnest island is full of adorable quokkas, candycane trees, chocolate lakes, and sugar mountains.
    Whatever happened to truth in advertising?
