My first baby girl used to bob her head and dance to this song when it first came out. She’s turning 21 this year and still remembers it! Thanks for the music John Butler Trio, from Victoria, Australia ❤
we had our honeymoon in Aus (2006) and as our plane flew over the outback, the rising sun glinting on the surfaces of billabongs, this came over my headphones that were plugging into a radio channel on the plane. a fantastic record that has stayed with me since then.
💚 This song will always be TIMELESS! John Butler came to my high school (must've been 15 years ago now) because the vice principle had a personal connection to him... about 44 of us students were selected to come into the music room for him to have a chat *strictly* no performing 😖and he spoke about what great effort, and patience, and constant practice to perfect his art, that it it took to break out into the industry as an independent artist. The way he spoke about music, and what it took to get where he was, is pretty much sumed up as patience, persistence, practice, and above all being humble. Staying true to who you are. He spoke about how he came up with the tune of this song... he said he was in the shower humming ('ba da-ing') a combination of known and improvised tunes when 'ba da da da di dun, da da di dun, ba da da da di da di, da di dad di da do' the tune just emerged to the front of his mind and he raced out of the shower to write it down. I remember him saying two things that helped him substancially to form a successful career: 1. Practice. How all through his teenage years he'd just be at home in his room playing his guitar for hours every single day. 2. He said you need to invest 80% of what you earn into your music. Living off bare minimum makes you appreciate life and what it offers you more, appreciate those around you more, it 'cleanses your soul when you never even realised it needed to be cleansed' That was a pretty epic like 45mins of my teenage life... we got to go up to him at the end of his talk and say hi and shake his hand and we could strum his guitar if we wanted too... I remember my cheeks burning so bad and saying hi and just clenching the neck of his guitar with my left hand. I swear I didn't wash that hand for like a week! He'll always live on as one of those great musicicans that had music flowing through his entire existence!
That's such an awesome story man, it must've been an incredible experience! I saw him busking in Tamworth for the Country Music Festival. At the time I had no idea who he was but he was playing slide guitar horizontally. I was in a trance for about 15 minutes until he took a break and I moved on. I stupidly didn't ask for his name and regretted it instantly as when I walked past where he was later on in the night and he had vanished. A few years later I heard my friend playing Zebra. Had no idea I was just about to discover who I saw busking. Blew my 13 year old brain to pieces and now every time I lose touch of reality, his (and his amazing bandmates over the years, can't forget them) music grounds me and sets me back on the right path. It's funny how life works out. What an amazing artist.
I did concert security and was privileged to meet them at gathering of the vibes! Great show , very fun! Coolest dudes I got to meet! Will never forget it!
Could not agree more with you. He basically shut down the venue in which I saw him play live because his encore was so epically long & riveting. One for the record books!! ❤🎉
I remember in 2009 at school one of the my mates brothers' friend playing this song on his guitar and it was the best thing i ever heard. I've been searching for years to find this song again, and today my mate was playing it at work!!! Crazy how fast time goes!!!!
WOW i just came across this group just the other night and i haven't stopped listening to it since! i already put every single track i could find on my Ipod and am finding where i can go to see them play live. Most Amazing voice and sound i have ever heard!
Love it! I was working in the music department at Myer (then Grace Bros.) when this came out! Myself and the guys I worked with kept putting this up LOUD!!! and end up selling heaps of JBT album!
It's beyond my ability to comprehend how anyone couldn't like this. Okay, that's not true, I understand completely how people's tastes are different, from country to R&B, from Classical to Classic Rock, we all prefer a different sound. I guess what I don't understand is how anyone with a love for music can't appreciate what he's saying, the rhythm of the music, and the strength and power in it.
Frank Laubach Doesn't it just make you move without you even knowing it? It's good music, I'm gonna listen to it again since you got me to the video to answer your comment, hehe, thanks for that!! :))
a good song is incredible forever, that's the difference between real music, and the things that people now listen that after a month they complete forget, real music is forever
I didn't know the band. YT suggested it to me, I hear some songs, I liked tremendously and became a fan. Subscribed. Now I'll go to search their albums. Great music.

Oh my goodness, man, this is juicy. I understand that juicy isn't a typical way to describe music, but there is nothing else I can use to describe this song. I absolutely love it. Kudos to JBT, positively stunning.
This bloody song got stuck in my head for months I couldnt remember what is was other then the fricking beat then one day one of my co-workers said oh yeah that songs zebra by the John Butler Trio, just like that 🤨👌🏼
Love me some John Butler Trio: I can be loud man, I can be silent I could be young man or I could be old. I can be a gentleman, I can be violent. I could turn hot man or I can be cold. I could be just like the calm before the storm or waiting for all hell yeah to break loose. I could be innocent or I could be guilty Doesn't mean that I won't believe in no noose I could be rich like a wandering Gypsy I could be poor like a fat wallet lost. I could be first or I could come last Its not who breaks the ribbon boy It's how you get across. I could be red blue black or white sunset Darkest at day or brightest at night I could be the sun or I could be the moon I'm made up from the stars boy I shining so bright so sing it I could be asleep or, I could be awake I can be alive or be the walking dead I can be ignorant, I could be informed I could lead my life or I could be led I can be anything I put my mind to man, all I gotta do is give myself half a chance I can bring love back into my life and share it with the world if I got some balance
As near a perfect groove as I've ever heard. I've lost count of how many times I've watched this video. (Don't worry, I've bought his albums, four of them)
